Another important musical birthday on the radar today...

Arthur Neville, born Dec 17, 1937. Art was the keyboard/organ player and founder of the legendary New Orleans funk band The Meters. The Meters are among the biggest influences on the development of funk. They exemplify "playing in the pocket" with all four members finding a groove and seamlessly locking in on it turning the entire band into a percussion instrument.

Even if one has never listened to a Meters' record, it is still entirely possible that they've heard The Meters. The Meters were the backing band on many hit songs including Dr. John's "Right Place, Wrong Time" and Lee Dorsey's "Working In the Coal Mine." Also, along with James Brown and Parliament/Funkadelic, The Meters are among the most frequently sampled artists in hip-hop music.

It does make me kind of sad when I say The Meters and get blank stares, especially from people who I assumed would know who they were. I remember in 2002 going to see Wayne Horvitz & Zony Mash play at a club here. I was talking to someone who likes to think they know a lot about music who was commenting on what a cool name it was for a band and wondered about its origin. When I told them it was from a Meters' song I got a "who are The Meters?"

I only wish I'd have gotten to see them play with all four original members. I did get to see George Porter Jr. play with P.B.S. which also features Russell David Baptiste on drums (who replaced Zigaboo after he left the Meters) and I've seen Leo Nocentelli play, and as cool as those shows were, it wasn't The Meters.

NP:

The Meters - Live Feb 1975 at The Bottom Line, NYC

I love this show. They could even make a song like "Witchita Lineman" sound cool.

Creatures Of Habit - Knots and Crosses ( an acoustic band out of New England, back in the 90's I think. Now called The Carol Noonan Band, I think, but no where as good as Knots and Crosses were.... plus, Knots and Crosses is a much better band name ).

jayson

I agree, about the band name part. Band names are a long time fascination of mine. I've got a long-running list of them for all kinds of potential bands. Knots and Crosses sounds like an acoustic band. Bands that are The Somebdy's Name Band only work for me in jazz settings. There it works just fine, but outside of that not so much.

I have, more than once, acquired music by a band simply because the name intrigued me. It doesn't always pan out, but sometimes it does. Take Japancakes for instance. I saw the name in some reviews and thought it was one of the more clever names I'd heard so I gave them a try. Turns out, they're an awesome band and I've since gotten all of their stuff.

turtlex
12-18-2008, 05:10 AM
Knots and Crosses had a big local hit with this one song and then the band broke up, of course. Then the lead singer...Carol Noonan, reformed with like two of the original guys, and the rest is history... cause they really never were as good.

I'd like to submit Boston Favorite "Eek-A-Mouse" for a band name. I always loved that name.

The Bambi Molesters? How the heck did Disney ever allow that !?!?? Too funny !

Personally, I have a couple of band names in my head - cause you never know when suddenly you'll need a band name. But, the in the movie Reality Bites, Ethan Hawke's band was called "Hey, That's My Bike" and I always thought that was pretty cool, too.

It's always a good idea to have a running list of potential names. A friend of mine winds up starting a lot of bands (none of which ever seem to last very long, but that's another story). He always asks me for names for them.

I actually just started a thread on band names, so feel free to share more of your thoughts on them. :)

That song will forever be associated with my favorite episode of Futurama for me. In "The Why of Fry" when he is trapped in the infosphere with the brains for what they believe will be all of eternity one of the brains says "should we sing American Pie or something" to which Fry responds "go ahead, I deserve it."

That song is a pretty good history lesson though. I used to take some pride in knowing every last reference in it. I can thank my dad for that.

I had a cool activities class ( like a school run club ) on music, and we learned all about American Pie and the references and like. It was very cool. I was in the like the 6th grade and listening to, say, Shaun Cassidy.... you can imagine what American Pie was like to me. Really opened my eyes to music. I became obsessed with Jim Morrison and the Doors for all of 7th grade and the world hasn't been the same since. :D

My education on that song came from driving around with my dad. I developed much of my obsessive interest in music from him. That song would come on the radio and he'd start detailing the history for me... "That line is about Elvis, that line is about Little Richard"... "The jester is Bob Dylan" and so on and so forth.

Turn, Turn, Turn and Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 back to back. Interesting. Two songs with/about biblical verses.

Some probably know Ten Years After from their iconic song "I'd Love To Change the World" but there is much more to their catalog than that one song, and much of it shows off Lee's incendiary guitar playing.

This clip of them performing at Woodstock pretty much sums up Lee's playing. Of all of the performances at Woodstock that made the film, for me this one comes in behind only Santana's and Sly & The Family Stone's sets as far as high energy jaw-dropping performances.

I'll let it speak for itself, but please, for your own safety, buckle up...

Today is the anniversary of the birth of one of my all time heroes, Frank Zappa, born Dec. 21, 1940.

I wouldn't even know where to begin expressing how much Zappa has meant to me. It's more than just his music (though I love his music to no end). It's his approach to music, his approach to forming a band. Listening to and reading about Frank taught me that a musician should be able to play any song in any style at any time. His bands were the ultimate in musical chameleons, able to turn on a dime from a blues band to a reggae band to a jazz band to a metal band, etc. Anything could happen at any time and often did. Most importantly, he taught me that there is always room for humor in art.

More than just the music, I admire FZ's dedication to free speech, taking on obscenity trials in England and the PMRC here in America.

One of my absolute favorite albums of all time, jazz or otherwise. This one is from pretty late in Duke's career and life (he was 70 when it was released), but it has all the power and the majesty of any of his earlier work. It's testimony to the man's greatness that this late in his career he could still be exploring new sounds and incorporating different influences into his work. There are good songwriters, there are great songwriters, and then there is Duke. I'd say the musicianship is excellent, but it's one of Duke's orchestras so that goes without saying.

That catalog is vast and ever-growing. It also covers a ludicrous range of styles. I have no doubt that some of it will appeal to you and some of it will make you want to smash your cd player (or however you listen to music). I'm pretty sure I wouldn't start with the projects with Patton. They are pretty far out there. Once you "get" Zorn a little bit, it starts to make more sense, but as a starting point it may leave you scratching your head and hating me for ever mentioning Zorn's name.

Everything In It's Right Place* - Brad Mehldau

*Radiohead cover

Brad's done several RH covers (at least 4 by my count). Arranged for a jazz piano trio RH's songs sound great. Brad is a master of phrasing. I can only compare him to Oscar Peterson and Keith Jarrett. I know that's pretty damn high praise, but Brad is worthy of every word of it.

He's by far one of my favorite piano players ever, and that is saying a lot because I have a ludicrous number of piano players in my collection. Brad's own work has always been very cool, but his choices in covers always make me feel like he's reading my mind.

I have all of Brad's material, and love it all. As big a fan as I am of his work with his trio, this live album presents something wholly different, Brad entirely solo at the piano. It allows the listener complete focus on what he gets out the instrument and what an incredible sense he has for phrasing. The album contains numerous original compositions by Brad, as well as his interpretations of songs by George and Ira Gershwin, Thelonious Monk, Radiohead and Nick Drake. It's simply a master class in solo piano.

I'm not saying I don't enjoy those types of songs. It's just annoying when you have to tell someone the name of the song during a conversation. Then you realize that you have no idea what the name of the song you're heaping encomia upon is called. It makes you feel like a bit of a dumb-ass.

jayson
12-23-2008, 10:39 AM
Believe me, I've experienced it too. It's even worse when you're talking about an instrumental song (which happens to me a lot with all the jazz I listen to) and you can't refer to the lyrics at all to help someone realize which song it is, you have to just hum or whistle a few bars of it.
