One of my favorite albums in my collection. It's a chance to hear one of my favorite groups cover most of an entire album by another one of my favorite groups. This MG's album presents most of the songs from The Beatles' Abbey Road (which was released only about nine months earlier) in the instrumental soul style which they made famous. The Beatles themselves were actually big admirers of Stax Records and the "Memphis sound" created, in large part, by the MG's and their guitarist Steve Cropper who produced many other Stax artists. This album is a must have for fans of either group.

As the name implies, this album is a tribute to the work of the great Italian composer Ennio Morricone, specifically his compositions for the "Spaghetti Western" films. This compilation is made up of mostly surf-rock style covers of some classic Morricone pieces, though there are some other styles at work as well.

No argument there. The whole song is beautiful, especially the whole arpeggiated acoustic guitar figure that Knopfler plays throughout the song, but what always gets me is the electric guitar tone he gets at the very end as he plays the outro. That is just thick sugary sweet tone. Knopfler does that as good as anybody.

*Bob Dylan cover.

Although, this version is not arranged like the Dylan song. It sounds much more like the Clash were shooting for a reggae version like the one by Matumbi on the Trojan Records label, which I have as part of one of the many Trojan box set releases I am addicted to. Either way, it's a decent cover of a great song, though none will ever touch the original Dylan version (which was used prominently in The Big Lebowski).

Jayson - I completely agree. The whole list is sort of all over the place. I never rank things the way Rolling Stone does.

I often think if I worked for RS, I'd have likely wound up committing some kind of atrocity when it came time to meet and compile these lists. It always seems to me that they are ranked according to some notion of what they feel they are "supposed to think" about some of these artists and not by actually listening to them.

I just cringe when I see a single female name ranked higher than Etta James. Yes, Aretha Franklin can sing, but come on! And you know that if Etta were the more well-known singer than Aretha the ranking would be the other way around.

I do know that some of my friends at the Tom Waits forum are glad he made the list at all (I believe he was #82). Personally, I think once you've listened to that voice for as long as I have you realize how exceptionally versatile it is and that it's a hell of a lot better than many of the 81 people ranked ahead of him, one of whom is Axl-Motherfucking-Rose. Axl Rose a better singer than Tom Waits? Not on this or any other level of the Tower is that the case.

See, this is what happens when I think about these lists. Stupid Rolling Stone.

Oh, and there are apparently four different covers. I just happened to get the Dylan one.

I've only seen the Dylan one. Do you know who are on the other three?

NP: Hey Jude* - Wilson Pickett

*Beatles cover. Talk about a great voice. Pickett comes in just behind Otis and JB for me as far as male singers go. This is a Beatles cover even the pickiest of fans (like me) can enjoy. The singing is incredible and the guitar playing, by a then-unknown Duane Allman, changed the way many artists and producers looked at the role of an electric guitar in R&B/soul records. The solo he plays as the outro also got the attention of Eric Clapton which eventually led to his desire to meet Duane and invite him to join Derek & The Dominoes.

Good call. I'm not particularly a fan of her music, but I do appreciate her voice. Considering the list purported to be about singers of the "rock era" it would make sense for her to have made the list since she does have a good voice for rock.

I also thought Freddie Mercury was too low on the list.

His ranking was another one that pissed me off. Love Queen or hate Queen (and I love Queen), there is little room for debate about how freakin' gifted Freddie was as a singer. In range alone he puts most other male singers to shame.

I'm usually so different from the Rolling Stone lists - I start to wonder if they put them that way, just so people would argue !!

I'm quite sure they do. I'm not sure how honest an approach to music criticism I consider that, but then again, we're talking about Rolling Stone and their days of honest music criticism are long since past.

Several important musical birthdays today, November 20.

Let's begin with one of the most talented and influential guitar players to ever pick up the instrument.

Duane Allman was born on Nov 20, 1946. Prior to the formation of The Allman Brothers Band with his brother Gregg, Duane was a session player at the legendary FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. There he contributed his guitar work to artists like Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin, King Curtis, Clarence Carter and Herbie Mann. Eventually Duane returned to Florida to form the ABB with his brother and some friends. Soon they were one of the most influential blues-rock bands in the world.

In August of 1970, the ABB concert in Miami was attended by Eric Clapton who was in town recording the first album for his new band, Derek & The Dominos. Clapton was familiar with Duane's work, particularly the soloing on Pickett's cover of "Hey Jude" and was a fan of the ABB. He went to the concert to meet Duane and invite him to participate on the D&D album. Though he never officially joined D&D, Duane's work is a crucial part of nearly every song on the album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs.

Sadly, Duane was killed in a motorcycle accident in October of 1971.

His influence and his genius can't be overstated.

And so, on with the music from Duane...

NP: Mountain Jam - The Allman Brothers Band

This song evolved out Duane's love of Donovan's song "There Is a Mountain". The ABB version is a long-form instrumental jam on the musical themes of the Donovan song. The officially released version which appears on the albums Eat a Peach and At Fillmore East clocks in at just under 34 minutes, featuring lengthy solos from each band member (well, actually a drum duet by Butch Trucks and Jaimoe as they play their parts together).

Jam #4 - Derek & The Dominos/The Allman Brothers Band

When the 20th anniversary edition of the D&D album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs came out in 1990, I was all over it, hoping to get a handful of unreleased gems from the recording sessions. My wish came true, and then some. The second disc features six lengthy instrumental jams, some with D&D minus Duane, a couple with Duane, and one that is D&D and most of the ABB.

This one, Jam #4, is an instrumental version of Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor", and features the entirety of D&D along with Duane and Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, Butch Trucks and Berry Oakley. This is an all-star electric blues jam for sure.

I always took some joy in the fact that it was recorded on Aug 27, 1970, the date of my birth. :)

1970, Poyldor Records

http://i33.tinypic.com/29asbwj.jpg

Originally released in 1970, it is the 1990 remastered version that I am listening to. I never even bought the original on cd, but I still have my vinyl copy of it.

The original album is a staple of classic rock collections, but the technology of the time, even in the hands of a master producer like Tom Dowd, was insufficient to fully reproduce the genius of Duane and Eric playing together. The 20th anniversary edition fixes a lot of these issues, most notably making crystal clear the sound of both guitars at all times and moving the bass tracks to the center of the mix. Hearing the true interplay between Duane and Eric is something to behold.

Well, I would have to explain a couple of latin american euphemisms (sp?) and similes, but let's just say it boils down to "I'm horny"

That's why after that verse he says "Come on, come on, come on baby!"

While I am a big fan of the Beastie Boys ability to bust rhymes, what has always impressed me about them and sets them apart from a LOT of other hip-hop artists is their ability to play their own instruments. Yes, there is a lot of sampling on their albums and it's used to great effect. However, there is a lot of original music as well, played by the three members of the group (along with keyboard player Mark Nishita aka "Money Mark").

Anyone who has the album Check Your Head will recognize most of the music on this album, but it puts it in a whole new light to hear it without the lyrics. Nobody will ever accuse the B-Boys of being the best musicians in the world, but they can lock into a good funk groove pretty damn well. It's certainly worth a listen.

The Last Waltz - One of my favorite documentaries, ever. A great flick !

The greatness of that film is testimony to how great a band they really were because Scorcese tried really hard to fuck it up in the live performance shots by portraying them as little more than a backing band for Robbie Robertson (with whom he was friends). Luckily with a band like that, the music comes through loud and clear (even if the camera is pointed far too often at Robbie who was "singing" into a mic that wasn't plugged into anything) and that's what makes it the great film that it is.

What always gets to me is that Dylan had to be repeatedly talked into showing up. I can't even imagine how much less significant that show would have been without his mini-set. I can do without Joni Mitchell's contribution, but that's why my dvd remote has a "skip" button.
