*Bruce Springsteen cover

Here's another fine example of how a well-crafted cover can change my opinion about a song. I love Springsteen, but I have always hated that song. Since I love Springsteen, I always chalked it up to it just being a not-so-great song. This cover caused me to re-evaluate that. Now I realize Bruce wrote a pretty good song but arranged it horribly and didn't really have the authenticity in his vocal delivery that he does in other songs. Manx nailed it. I've only discovered Manx very recently, but boy am I glad I did. I've not heard anything quite like him before.

R_of_G - can I ask, do you listen on an Ipod? With playlists? Or just shuffle? Your songs are great.

Thanks :)

I listen to my iPod (80gb). As for what I listen to, it varies... Sometimes I use playlists that I've made for some occasion (like this morning's brief Election Day playlist). I tend to make playlists for just about anything, but often times I make them on the fly, playing whatever hits me from one minute to the next. There are times when I am in this thread and I will play something that occurs to me based on what someone else is playing due to similarity in titles, themes, etc). Sometimes it's songs I am trying to learn how to play. Sometimes, like at the moment, I listen to full albums. Occasionally, it's on full-on random. When the new iTunes was released with the "genius" function, I joked with SJ that I was my own genius. I know my music collection inside and out (my music is my Tower and I am a full-fledged junkie) and I have an endless amount of fun playing with it to keep myself entertained.

Coming up with playlists is one of my favorite obsessions. In the pre-iPod days I used to make mixed CD's for my friends. Before that it was mixed tapes. I can't help myself but try to connect songs by theme or title or having musical parts in the same key or whatever qualification I can come up with. It happens in my head even when I don't consciously think about it. Even when I am on shuffle, it's not always full-on shuffle of the whole library. I have several playlists just to shuffle from.

Fruno - there are still a couple of songs from the earliest parts of Collins' solo career that give me a warm nostalgic feeling but it was once he started drifting towards doing long sweeping ballads for movie soundtracks (and other songs that sounds like they might as well be) that I got kind of bored.

But believe me, I understand guilty pleasure music. I'm sure you know from your familiarity with my music tastes that although I tend to drift towards the more experimental or "outside" music, I have a deep and abiding love for well-made pop music as well. It is one of the many reasons that artists like Waits and Zappa and Ween appeal to me. As experimental and different artists like these are for much of their music, they sometimes make pure pop records and you realize how powerful that familiar pop style music can be when it's really done right. I have plenty of well-crafted pop in my collection just to keep the form fresh in my mind. It's like musical crack. :)

Of the many many versions I have of this beautiful song, Marc's is way up there towards the top of my list. I am learning to play it and trying to re-imagine it as some kind of hybrid of Marc's version and the way Miles played it. We'll see how that turns out.:orely:

Especially considering that in this case the original is among my favorite songs. To be honest, I'm not even sure where I got the Cowboy Junkies. I am not a fan. It just popped up on a shuffle. I may have to un-check that one for future sync'ing.

It's on the Natural Born Killers soundtrack. Perhaps you have it from that? That's where I have it from, though it's not currently on my iPod.

I love your music tastes, R of G. I look forward to seeing your next posts.

Thanks :)
You can feel free to call me Jayson.

Thanks, Jayson. Not sure about that soundtrack, I think it's a Cowboy Junkie's MTV disc or something. Smells like a Christmas present from someone who really doesn't know me.

Love some TMBG. Too vast a catalog to love it all, but I've always liked that one. We saw them a few years ago. The show wasn't great (though a lot of that had to do with hating the venue, one far too many good bands come to in our area) but I still love a lot of their albums.

I like a couple TMBG songs, not all of them. Particle Man is probably my favorite. That and Istanbul (not Constantinople), both are on Flood. Never seen them in concert, though.

NP: Brave - Idina Menzel ( man I am all over the place today )

I like that one a lot too. I've never heard the original version from the 50's, but I do have at least one other interesting version in my library. I have a multi-dsic collection of semi-obscure "surf rock" songs and there is an instrumental surf rock version on that which I've tried to figure out more than once how to play with little success so far.

NP: I Don't Know - The Beastie Boys

LOVE this song and did figure out how to play it.

My sister and I saw them open for the Stones in 90 or 91. I knew of them before that, after that it became an obsession. Vernon Reid constantly expands my thoughts about what can be done with a guitar. The Stones were fun too, though I'd rather have seen Bowie.

Bowie was freakin amazing! I was blown away, and the whole "Sound and Vision" theme was very cool. HUGE stadium show... and now that you mention it - I think it was opening for the Rolling Stones where I saw Living Colour. The Steel Wheels tour. I had like 14 row seats, on the floor. OMG. Sooooo cool.
