I've been meaning to get the Japancakes album - how is it??

Giving Machines or Loveless?

Both came out last year. I bought Giving Machines, but have yet to buy Loveless (mostly because I'm not particularly a fan of the My Bloody Valentine album of which it's a top-to-bottom cover). Giving Machines I enjoy. It's pretty similar to the rest of their work, so if you enjoy their sound, you will probably enjoy that album as well. I really like their pedal steel player in particular.

NP: The Pull - The Microphones

Thanks for getting me into them Fruno! I like them a lot.

Giving Machines, I meant. It sounds awesome since I really do like their sound.
I'm seeing Mount Eerie (Phil Elverum/leader of The Microphones) on October 29th in Los Angeles. He's playing a free show at this art gallery called SiteLA, which was co-founded by Sarah Anderson from the band Lucky Dragons (who also put on a fucking incredible live show--you make the music!).

Anywho...

The Mount Eerie show sounds cool. I checked out The Microphones after seeing you post so much about them. I figured, Fruno's got great taste in music, so this is worth looking into. I was not disappointed. I'll definitely look for Blau's album.

In honor of Rosh Hashanah, I will be playing a ton of jewish music today from the vast John Zorn Masada songbooks.

Up first, the original incarnation of Masada...

Masada Live at Tonic 2001 - Masada
2001, Tzadik Records

http://i33.tinypic.com/24qk3lh.jpg

A double album of two live sets by John Zorn's Masada, the acoustic quartet designed by Zorn to combine the feel of Ornette Coleman's free jazz with Zorn's own radical jewish compositions.

John Zorn - saxophone

Greg Cohen - bass

50th Birthday Celebration Volume 4 - Electric Masada
2004, Tzadik Records

http://i33.tinypic.com/5yf3hk.jpg

Electric Masada is possibly the most exciting of Zorn's many Masada projects. Electric Masada brings jazz-fusion and flat-out noise rock into the equation. They often remind me of Miles Davis' early 1970's bands. This album was recorded live at Tonic in NYC in September 2003, part of a month-long celebration of Zorn's 50th birthday.

John Zorn - Alto Saxophone
Marc Ribot - Guitar

Thanks Fruno. I'm enjoying the hell out of it. The interplay between Ribot and Feldman is nothing short of phenomenal. Violin and electric guitar haven't meshed so perfectly since Zappa and Jean-Luc Ponty.

And there is still much more of Zorn's Masada compositions in the queue this afternoon.

I know just how you feel Fruno. I have turned some of my friends on to specific Zorn projects here and there, but none of them really seems to appreciate all that much of his work. To me, that whole downtown New York avant-jazz scene (of which Zorn is the ringleader) is the most interesting in all of music. If I could afford to live on the Lower East Side of Manhattan I would do it in a heartbeat just to have access to these musicians playing live as often as they do.

I am also looking forward to Friday and the release of Everything That Happens Will Happen Today. I love Byrne and Eno and have waited a long time for them to collaborate again.

Azazel: Book of Angels Vol. 2 - Masada String Trio

http://i38.tinypic.com/2lqjw2.jpg

The String Trio is another exceptional vehicle for realization of Zorn's Masada compositions. With the focus solely on acoustic stringed instruments, this incarnation lends the most "old world" feel to these tunes. The interplay between the three musicians is nothing short of spectacular. Each finds his own space in the whole and plenty of room for improvisation, but their ability to lock in on one another is what stands out most of all.

Masada Rock - John Zorn
2005, Tzadik Records

http://i37.tinypic.com/2ly5w0x.jpg

This is one of the more unique offerings of the Masada releases. For this project, Zorn enlisted guitarist Jon Madof and his band Rashanim to interpret songs from Book One. The ten selections on this album had not been previously recorded by any other Masada project (of course book one has about 200-300 compositions to choose from so there's little repetition anyway).

Rashanim is best described as a jewish power trio. They use the classic guitar/bass/drums configuration to bring a rock sensibility to these compositions, while incorporating musical language not just from rock, but from jazz, klezmer and several other styles. The three musicians are extremely skilled improvisers and when they lock in on a groove, they can flat out rock as well (if not better) than regular rock musicians. There are certainly more varied styles of rock at play on this record than you will hear from most rock bands who tend to specialize in one genre. This band runs the full spectrum.

Guitarist Marc Ribot joins the band for two songs and the combo of Ribot and Madof is outright extraordinary.

Rashanim are:

Jon Madof - guitar
Sanir Ezra Blumenkranz - bass
Matthias Kunzli - drums

Blank Generation - Richard Hell & The Voidoids
1977, Sire Records

http://i33.tinypic.com/2j0bmn8.jpg

Richard Hell was a member of several of New York city's most influential punk bands of the 1970's. He was one of the founding members of Television, though he left the band prior to their recording their first album so his contributions to the band existed only in their live performances. After leaving that band he formed the Heartbreakers with Jerry Nolan and Johnny Thunders, former members of the New York Dolls. His next band was the Voidoids. Their album "Blank Generation" and particularly it's title track, are emblematic of the 1970's punk scene in NYC.

One of the reasons I love this album is the phenomenal guitar work of the late Robert Quine. There have been many to claim that punk rockers can't play their instruments. Quine's work on this album obliterates that myth. The drummer on the album is Marc Bell who went on to become "Marky Ramone" replacing Tommy Erdelyi as the drummer in the Ramones.

Today (Oct 7) is the birthday of one of my biggest musical influences and one of my all-time favorite songwriters, Radiohead's Thom Yorke. I've got my playlist assembled to pay tribute to Thom today.

NP:

Thom Yorke
Live Oct 26 & 27, 2002
Bridge School Benefit
Mountainview, CA

Two nights of solo Thom Yorke. Given all the texture and layering of Radiohead's work (both live and in the studio) it is quite interesting to hear some of these songs stripped down to nothing but Thom's voice and a single guitar or piano. For me the highlight of the two sets is Thom's performance of Neil Young's "After the Goldrush" on a piano which actually belongs to Neil (the benefit is organized by Neil and his wife). With Radiohead Thom has slipped a verse or two into an intro to "Everything In It's Right Place" but this, to my knowledge, is the first time he'd performed the song in its entirety.

The Eraser is Yorke's first solo album, though the title track actually contains piano chords that were played by RH's Jonny Greenwood and then sampled and modified by Thom. The song "Black Swan" also contains some samples of Thom's RH bandmates. The music is primarily electronic comprised of samples and beats compiled and arranged by Thom. To me, it harkens back to the sound of RH's heavily electronic influenced Kid A and Amnesiac, two albums which I love.

A short solo performance by Yorke, at a rally for a worthy cause, fair trade. He performed a handful of songs which would eventually appear in their fully realized forms on In Rainbows, as well as "No Surprises" from OK Computer.

This (mostly) acoustic performance was taped for British television. It's another chance to hear some Radiohead songs stripped down. The highlight here is that Thom & Jonny played "Fog", a much loved song which has not appeared on any album and only rarely gets played live.

Linda, thank Gan you posted the original Tom Waits version of that song!

I was in love with the Rain Dogs album for years before Rod Stewart had to come along and do his horrible cover of that song. For a long time after, I was unable to listen to TW's version because of Rod Stewart's getting stuck in my head, which is unacceptable for me. Rain Dogs is a perfect album from top to bottom and to have had to either skip a song or cringe when I heard it really got to me. I've since put it behind me and still consider Rain Dogs the best non-jazz album of all time.

Thom Yorke & Jonny Greenwood
Live July 21, 1995
Atlanta, GA

Another stripped-down performance from Thom & Jonny, this one from the period between The Bends and OK Computer. It's not really acoustic as Jonny plays electric guitar throughout most of it, but he plays straight through the amp with no pedals or effects which is a very different way to hear Jonny.

Today is the birth date of John Cummings aka Johnny Ramone, born October 8, 1948. For someone who played an incredibly small number of leads, Johnny is nonetheless an exceptionally influential guitarist.

Incidentally, it is also the birthday of Christopher Joseph Ward aka C.J. Ramone. C.J. joined the band in 1989 after the departure of original bass player Dee Dee Ramone. Among many other things, C.J. is responsible for suggesting the Ramones cover "I Don't Wanna Grow Up" by Tom Waits.

So in honor of their birthdays...

This is a legendary show in the history of punk rock. Unable to get booked for many gigs at home, the Ramones decided to go play in England. This show was attended by members of The Clash and the Sex Pistols and is much talked about in documentaries about all three bands. This clip from the "End of the Century" documentary puts it in perspective...

This one is an officially released live album by the band, though I had a bootleg copy of this show (on cassette!) for many years before it was officially released in 2003. The album is a recording of their January 7, 1978 show at The Palladium in New York City. The show is among the last with Tommy as the drummer, though he continued to work for many years with the band as a manager and producer.

Once more, the Bear and I have very similar tastes in music.

Add in "Out of the Blue" from Mind Games and you have my three favorite of his non-Beatles' compositions. I'm also not particularly fond of the title track to Imagine. It's a lovely sentiment, but I actually prefer his more militant expressions of similar sentiments.

I didn't like the drowning pool version. The order of the song version for me is:

Drowning pool: okay
system of a down: good
Rob Zombie: AWESOME!
