*Actually named "I'm So Young" the song was written by William H. Tyus, and was covered frequently in the 1960's by such groups as The Beach Boys, The Del-Vikings and The Ronnettes (who called there's "So Young"). None of their versions featured the particularly nasty guitar tone of the Dogs' Andy Gortler.

Stabbing Westward, Sleep (this one's actually inspiring a story of mine about that most despised of all human acts)

she's been here so many times before
she can't remember
when she last felt anything at all
but this fear and anger
she stares intently at the door
listens for his footsteps
she knows exactly what's in store
and the knowing makes it worse

floating high above her bed
staring at her father's head
wishing one of them were dead

floating high above her bed
staring at her father's head
wishing one of them were dead
so this hell could finally end

when he calls her daddy's little girl
she doesn't hear him
when he crushes her, she can't feel
that her screams are silent
hides in the corners of her mind
where she plays contently
she leaves this nightmare far behind
she escapes inside her dreams

Jimi Hendrix & Jack Bruce
Session - Oct 17, 1968

Jimi often professed to being a big fan of Cream. In these sessions, he got a chance to play with Cream bass player Jack Bruce. The sessions consist of several blues jams, and an all too brief run through Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love". Jimi actually played some much longer versions of that one with the Experience on several 1968 live dates, but the one in this session is nothing more than a slight jam on the main riff. Regardless, the rest of the session provides MORE than enough highlights.

I think it's really really good. It sounds alot like old Metallica. I think my only problem with it at all is there are a few parts where it shows that they're trying to sound like old Metallica. It's really well done for the most part though and allowed me to forget and maybe someday even forgive the abomination called St. Anger.

Marco is an exceptionally talented composer and experimental guitarist. I've had the pleasure of speaking with him via a guitar forum of which we are both members. This album is his second solo release, and combines the influences of such avant-garde guitar players like Marc Ribot and Fred Frith with classical composers like Gustav Mahler into a sound that is completely unique to Marco. I've been waiting months for this album to be completed, and it was well worth the wait.

Today (Sept. 23) is the birth date of three major figures in the music world to whom I'll be paying tribute in my playlist today.

Up first...

Born Sept. 23, 1926 - John Coltrane

Giant Steps - John Coltrane
1960, Atlantic Records

http://i35.tinypic.com/24cbghk.jpg

Giant Steps, Trane's second album for Atlantic, is his first album consisting entirely of his own compositions. It marked Trane's farewell to be-bop as he shifted to a more modal approach on his following albums.

Stellar Regions - John Coltrane
1995, Impulse! Records

http://i38.tinypic.com/2vlqyb6.jpg

Recorded in 1967, this album was not released during Trane's lifetime. The recordings of these sessions were discovered in 1994 by Alice Coltrane (Trane's wife). This is definitely one of the more "outside" of Trane's albums, exploring all manner of new territory for jazz and showcasing Trane's fascination with polyrhythm.

Born Sept. 23, 1930 - Ray Charles

Live - Ray Charles
1987, Atlantic Records

http://i37.tinypic.com/204h90.jpg

The material on this live album was culled from two live performances (from 1958 and 1959). As much of a genius as Ray was in the studio, it was in his live performances that he was in a class that very few artists could ever match. This album is a perfect illustration of that.

Scofield is a legend of jazz guitar having played in the bands of such luminaries as Miles Davis, Charles Mingus and Gary Burton, as well as his many many years as leader of his own bands. Sco is both a brilliant songwriter and a masterful interpreter of other's songs. This album is a great tribute to Ray Charles and features many special guests including Dr. John, Warren Haynes, Willie Weeks, and Mavis Staples.

Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band
Live - Nov. 18, 1975 @ London, England

This show was Springsteen's live debut in Europe. It illustrates how incredibly tight a band this is, and the exceptional showmanship of its leader. I saw the band in 1985 and though I have seen many many bands since, I have yet to see one that is as tight from the first note to the last, and I have never seen a performer as charismatic as Bruce (and that says a lot considering some of the other acts I've seen).

Today, Sept, 25 is the birthday of Michael Melchiondo, Jr., aka Dean Ween of the band Ween. In honor of Deaner, today I will be playing some of my favorite of their albums.

This is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've heard. Somehow the Corwood representative manages to blend Erik Satie piano with his trademark atonal vocals into something without flaws.
