Yes, Redding wrote it along with Al Bell and Allen Jones, and Otis recorded the first version of it, which was released shortly after his death.

Indeed it is. A tremendously good album by three exceptional musicians. By far one of my favorites in Frisell's vast catalog of great albums. I'd have bought it anyway because it's Frisell, but I was intrigued by his choice of Holland and Jones as rhythm section, and it did not disappoint in the least. Alas, Elvin is gone, but I do wish Frisell would bring in Dave Holland again at some point for another session.
And the album cover is pretty f'n sweet as well.

Such an under-rated album, at least in RH circles. To me, it marks another change in the bands' sound as they learned how to incorporate the electronic experimentation of Kid A and Amnesiac with the guitar-heavy sound of their previous work. It also marked a big step forward for Thom Yorke as a lyricist providing some of his more insightful and meaningful lyrics.

2006, Ropeadope Records

Personnel:
Bobby Previte - drums
Charlie Hunter - guitar, bass
Steve Bernstein - trumpet, slide trumpet
Jamie Saft - organ, mellotron, moog, guitar, bass
Skerik - saxophone
Stanton Moore - drums
Stew Cutler - harmonica, slide guitar
One of the main reasons this album stands out for me, aside from the all-star personnel listed above, is that it is a rare chance to hear Charlie Hunter play guitar and bass separately. Charlie typically plays an 8-string guitar. On the bottom three strings he plays bass lines, and on the top five he plays guitar. He has the pick-ups routed to two different amps to achieve the sound of independent bass and guitar. He plays the different parts simultaneously which is a lot of fun to watch. On this album, Charlie plays a normal 6 string guitar and a separate 4 string bass. It is unreal what he can do with these instruments not having to play them both at the same time.

Intelligence Failure - Buckethead & Viggo Mortensen
2005, Perceval Press
http://i37.tinypic.com/2qs3za8.jpg
The songs on this album utilize excerpts from speeches and news conferences by current and former members of the Bush administration. They are mixed down and overdubbed with new and previously composed music played by Viggo Mortensen, Buckethead, Henry Mortensen, Walter Mortensen, and Travis Dickerson.
Nothing like hearing GWB's ludicrous "Why they hate us" speech mixed with Buckethead playing the William Tell Overture (aka The Lone Ranger theme).
I didn't know what to expect when I got this album as I only knew Viggo as an actor. I purchased it because I'm pretty much interested in any project Buckethead involves himself with (except his brief stint in G'n'R). This album is an interesting one for sure. Not for those who feel patriotism means only thinking good thoughts about one's country, but I was never one of those.

"Hypocrisy is the greatest luxury, raise the double standard"
- Michael Franti, "Hypocrisy Is the Greatest Luxury"
The Disposable heroes were Michael Franti and Rono Tse. This was Franti's band prior to the formation of Spearhead (who will probably get a spin later this afternoon). This album featured the brilliant 8 string guitar work of a then unknown Charlie Hunter (this album began my obsession with Charlie). Lyrically, this album reminds me a lot of the greatest of the works of Gil Scott-Heron. "Politically charged" doesn't really even begin to describe it. Although recorded during the Regan/Bush #1 days, this album still resonates quite well today. I wonder why that is.

Mike Patton has exceptional vocal skills. He's done much work with John Zorn's Naked City wherein the vocals are not lyrics but just noises one can make with their voice, and man, he can make a lot of them. The vocalist on the albums is Yamatsuka Eye (of the Japanese band The Boredoms) but Patton has stood in for Eye on many live shows. He's also done several other projects with Zorn which are also quite interesting. Patton has skills.

Milestones is a landmark album in jazz. Featuring the return to Miles' band of John Coltrane, the album marks the beginnings of Miles' experimentation with modal jazz in which soloists were no longer basing their play on chord changes, but on the use of modal scales (more akin to many kinds of Eastern music).

If Milestones was the start of Miles' modal jazz experimentation, Kind of Blue was the crowning achievement. It is impossible to truly gauge the influence of this album as it goes far beyond the massive influence it had in the world of jazz. Guitar legend Duane Allman (of the Allman Brothers Band) stated that his soloing on such songs as the classic "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" was influenced by Miles and Coltrane's playing on this album. Pink Floyd pianist Richard Wright cites Bill Evan's work on this album often as an influence on his development of the piano part of "Breathe" from Dark Side of the Moon.

I also watched Live at Pompeii for about the billionth time last night and cried my eyes out whenever Rick was on screen.

I got to see Roger Waters a couple of years ago which was a real treat, though, he could have used Gilmour on that tour because I thought his guitarists weren't that spectacular. Firstly, it took two of them just to play all of what Gilmour played by himself. Secondly, both of them had crappy thin tone which is not acceptable for Pink Floyd songs. Still, Roger himself was in great voice and overall the show was awesome.

Did you know that song is actually fairly old, having been originally recorded by The Four Lads in 1953? It was written by Jimmy Kennedy who also wrote the song "South of the Border"* among many others. The song has been covered dozens of times, though none as well known as the TMBG version.
I had not known it was a cover until a few years ago when I got a multi-disc compilation of rare surf-rock songs and on it was a surf-rock version of that song. It pre-dated TMBG so I knew it couldn't be a cover of them, so I looked it up on the internets.
* Both "South of the Border" and "Istanbul" have been used in episodes of the Simpsons.

In my opinion, this is one of the Floyd's most underrated albums. In any discussions I've had with people over their work it is rarely if ever even mentioned. It's creation and recording were done during the same period as the much more well known Dark Side of the Moon. Actually, they took a break from recording DSOTM to record this album which was intended as a soundtrack for the Barbet Schroeder film La Vallee.
The album marks some very early use of synthesizers (certainly the earliest use of a VCS3) by Rick Wright, something that would play heavily in the sound of the band on later recordings.
If you don't know this album and you love Pink Floyd, you are doing yourself a disservice.

IMO, if a band tries to go on after the loss of more than one member especially one with such a unique sound all they can hope to be is a really good cover band. Some of the stuff without Barrett and Waters is good....damn good, but I hate to call it Floyd..

i would agree with the assessment of losing band members; another one i despise is when a band changes singers and tries to act like they're the same band. the only success in this route has been Journey; Slipknot and Drowning Pool are mockeries of their original lineups, even though in the 'Knot's case, I prefer their modern one. still, they should have a different name. even if the sound is the same, let's face it, 90% of fans associate with a voice more than any other instrument. It'd be like Velvet revolver calling itself Guns 'n' Roses, or Audioslave claiming to be Rage Against the Machine.
not knocking TMBG, i made the statement with more than a subtle attempt at satire; i enjoy them as well, along with NFG. Any band that can take a cover and make it their own gets my vote.

Recording in Rome in 1969, the Floyd made several contributions to the Michelangelo Antonioni film Zabriskie Point. The officially released soundtrack also features the work of Jerry Garcia, The Grateful Dead, acoustic guitar legend John Fahey and others.
One of Floyd's songs which was recorded at the time but not used on the soundtrack was a Rick Wright composition called "The Violent Sequence". Waters and Wright later used this piece as the basis of the song "Us and Them" on DSOTM. In the making of DVD for DSOTM Roger discusses this and does a very amusing imitation of Antonioni ("...it's beautfiul, but it's a so sad").
This bootlegged release contains all the recordings done by the Floyd at these sessions. Very very worth seeking out.

This was the first solo effort by Wright. All of the songs were written by Wright alone, save one which he co-wrote with his wife. There is some beautiful piano work, though Wright overdoes it a bit on the synthesizers, of course it was 1978. :)
I don't listen to this one very often, and only got it in the first place as a curiosity. I actually had to look for almost an hour last night to find it in my library (which is still not 100% digitized) so I could put in on the iPod to listen to today - but I still like it better than Gilmour's "About Face" solo album.

The Dogs were "garage revival" before garage revival became cool. The absolute perfect blend of 50's rock and roll sensibilities and 60's proto-punk raw power, the Devil Dogs can flat out bring it like no other band (in fact, they make some of the other bands that are currently attempting to play in this style seem like complete jokes). This album contains their cover of the Dictator's punk classic "Stay With Me". These same Dictators once claimed in another of their classic songs they could play "Faster and Louder" than anyone else. The Devil Dogs play their song much faster and much much louder than they did. If you enjoy flat-out raw rock and roll, find yourself some Devil Dogs records.

This is the debut album from Television. Television was the first rock band to perform at New York's legendary CBGB's. Along with the Ramones and the Patti Smith Group, Television were the core of the burgeoning punk scene which was growing at CBGB's and Max's Kansas City. Unlike many of their contemporaries who shunned all but the basics of musicianship, the players in Television were veritable virtuosos. This added a completely different element to their contributions to the punk scene and had massive influence on bands to follow for many many years. The interplay between the guitars of Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd and the use of extended instrumental passages created a sound unique on the scene.

Jimi Hendrix & Larry Young
The Record Plant Sessions 1969
Today, September 18, is the anniversary of the passing of Jimi Hendrix. I thought I'd mark the anniversary by playing the sessions which to me typify the direction in which Jimi was heading before his tragic death. Teaming up with modal-jazz organist Larry Young was a major shift in direction for Jimi, and these sessions show that it was yet another style that he'd have easily mastered had he lived. His work with Young was nothing short of spectacular and nothing at all like any previous work he'd done. I just wish he'd lived long enough to complete the sessions he and Miles Davis had planned. From what he wrote in his autobiography, Miles seemed to love Jimi.

The Ramones
Live Oct 13, 1979
Northwestern University, Chicago, IL
Today, September 18, was the birthday of Douglas Colvin aka Dee Dee Ramone. Dee Dee was the bass player and a founding member of the band. He was also the primary songwriter and continued to contribute songs to the band after his departure in 1989. The famous "1-2-3-4" count-in that begins many many Ramones' songs is done by Dee Dee.
He passed away in 2002 as a result of a heroin overdose. His struggles with his addictions are documented in the classic song "Chinese Rocks" which he co-authored with Richard Hell (another legendary punk bass player). The song was originally recorded by Hell's band The Heartbreakers and later by the Ramones themselves.
In his honor, I thought I'd give some play to one of the better-sounding live Ramones shows in my collection.
