NP: Paranoid Android - Brad Mehldau (solo live version)
Brad is an amazing jazz pianist. He released a version with his trio on his Largo album which is amazing, but the version he plays live and solo is both a lesson in piano phrasing, and an illustration of how much there really is to that song. Brad's covered other RH as well (Exit Music, Knives Out, Everything In It's Right Place, and at least one other that is slipping my mind right now).

i'd have a hard time attaching a genre to them on anything other than a song by song basis. i'd say it all falls under the umbrella of rock, but then there's a song like "You and Whose Army" which is much closer to jazz than anything in the rock family. one of the reasons i love that band. it doesn't get stale.

touche. the same reason i adore such artists as pearl jam and the smashing pumpkins. you know what you can expect from the radio-and-mtv-friendly singles, but if you've never bought a record, then, much like in radiohead's case, you have no clue what the fuck you're in for. i recall somebody telling me once that due to the popularity of tracks such as today, cherub rock, quiet, bullet w/butterfly wings, the end is the beginning is the end, etc etc., he thought they were nothing but another hardcore Slayer clone. Imagine this dipshit's shock when i played "Twilight to Starlight" start to finish, with its vast array from thirty-three, to 1979, to tales of a scorched earth, to lily (my one and only), to bodies, where boys fear to tread, back around the spectrum to stumbleine. THOSE artists are the ones who truly deserve our adulation.

A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall* - Bill Frisell
*Bob Dylan cover
Frisell is such a masterful interpreter of Dylan. With Dylan covers I often find the instrumental ones are the ones I drift towards. I know the lyrics inside and out and in most cases the only one I want to hear vocalize them is Bob. Frisell lets the guitar do the singing.

Each of the songs you just talked about I listened to - I really really like the Frisell cover. Basically I like Frisell a whole lot. When I'm at work (like I am now) I usually listen to Radiohead or Frisell, depending on my mood. Thanks to you Jayson. :huglove:

I'm so glad to hear that. :)
Especially about Frisell. There are so few people that I talk to that know who he is (not counting the people on my guitar forum) that it's great to introduce someone else to his work. There's just such a wide variety in his work that fits so many different listening situations.

That one's a great song about a great musician in his own right. Carter played bass for Miles' second great 1960's quintet. Recently, but after that song was written, Carter played with Frisell and Paul Motian (not sure if that was one of the albums I sent you). That trio is doing a series of dates at The Blue Note in NYC next January that I would love to go see, but it ain't gonna happen.

I think I just figured out how to play this one a la Frisell's version.

If I did, it'd be the album called "Bill Frisell/Ron Carter/Paul Motian"
"People" is another example of a great cover by him. I thought I hated that song. I just hated Streisand. Bill's version showed me it's actually a beautiful song.

When I first bought that album I saw that song in the track listing and I was hoping it was a different song with the same name. When it played the first time I was pleasantly surprised that I liked it. :)

It'll be Otis all morning.
There is another musical hero of mine who was also born on June 9th, the legendary drummer Elvin Jones. For my money, he's the greatest drummer in the history of music.
So this afternoon I will be playing a lot of Coltrane and several other great albums on which Elvin played (which will definitely include the album he did with Bill Frisell and Dave Holland).
Not a bad double musical birthday to celebrate.
