Nope, decided against it since I've seen him talk a few times and I thought the ticket prices were kinda high for that.

From Betts Books site:

""***UPDATE...Hartford King event was GREAT! Bad traffic jam on Merritt Parkway made me pretty anxious about arriving in time, but we only lost 45 minutes and so we got to VIP pre-event at about 6:15. Saw some wonderful friends/customers after I arrived. I thought maybe King would be mingling, but his handlers had him ensconced behind a glass partition and a long line snaked out into the other room, so he was "receiving" his Constant Readers one at a time like a wedding receiving line. Everyone was getting pictures taken. He was quite patient and gracious with everyone. My oldest son has pictures and will get those up soon (but as a teenage boy, he's still in the "sack" as we speak! I got a solo photo with sai King and a family picture as well...After the photo-op, you turned in vouchers to get your pre-signed trade paperback copy of Joyland......the Interview with Colin McEnroe was a good one. King was in "good form" last night. My seat was orchestra Cental section Row B and I was maybe 15 yards from King...superb seats....my only complaint was that King's microphone was not the greatest and the sound system was just so-so, and there was about 15% of content that I could not really hear. All in all, pretty sweet night!"

Typing on iPad . I am trying to stay positive about Hartford event, but after attending three straight awesome events, this one was my least productive in terms of king time and book signings (other than joy land, I ended up with five signed copies. Sending most to betts books to cover my habit, David is my dealer).

Tickets were 250 each, staff at event hyper, hyper active. They had two body guards with sk. I have never seen a body guard at any other event. They escort sk into lobby he says high, they move him into museum room, everyone lines up outside of room, we file in like cattle say hi, get picture taken and then moved out. Each person had a minute or two face time, then we sat in lobby and watched a line of people.

My preference would have been have him on stage or in lobby so we could watch all the interactions with the other guests, we were rushed through a line and then we waited for him to come out of the room for mingling. Nope body guards rushed him out after meet and greet and ten minutes of private photos with staff of museum. Not complaining, just would have done it differently.

Uptight staff told everyone, repeatedly he would not sign anything, body guard #1 made sure no one even asked.

For someone meeting him for the first time, it would have been awesome, but for a fourthtimer like me, it was way too structured, there was no time for him to be his awesome, unstructured, fun self!

Did I mention he wasn't signing anything! There were signs, announcements, lectures and scolding s. I was told five times he wouldn't be signing.

Am i sorry I went? Heck no. Met a lot of great people, had an extra day off work, so I convinced my wife to drive to Bangor Maine we r going to his hous in the morning!

How did I get five copies? Two came with VIP ticket

Met a school teacher on the public bus flew in from Michigan to see her fav author sittin in the cheap seats. She was spending a lot of money just to hear him speak, I looked at my wife and said I can't ever complain again, she was happy to be in an auditorium, I got to shake his hand, photo op etc.... I am very lucky!

But on bus she said she got an email from the bookstore, everyone got the same offer except VIPs, if u bought a ticket, u could buy joy land signed for 112 dollars. Just saying. wWE ALL MISSED THIS DEAL? WE SHOULD ALL BE BANNED FROM SK COLLECTING!!! HOw did none of us catch this. I went online and bought two iffy five dollar tickets and was able to purchase 2 more books. Picked up one that night at event, they said I could only have one, then called the next day pick up the other one!

The fifth book came from mark twain house, I called the next day to see if they had an extra book, the lady said no, I said thanks again for the awesome event, she asked me if I was the guy that was first in line, I said yes, she said I should come back to the mark twain house the manager had something for me! Yep it was signed, manager said I was so enthusiastic, polite she wanted me to go home happy! Book was free

The event at bushnell was awesome, the moderator let king talk! He would ask sk a question and then let him answer, never once did he interrupt or put his own life into the king event.... At Boston Lowell event, Andre Dubois, the moderator still thinks the event was about him and not sk. Only thing I missed about this event is the q&a session. There was none here, sometimes sk is really funny with q&a,s

I hope it doesn't sound like complaining, this event was over staffed, over planned, king was rushed and overly protected compared to other events I attended. But it was still a wonderful opportunity. I would do it all over again.

After reading this overly long post, I bought three extra posters of the event, one for twisted Nadine if she wants it and the other two r up for grabs, free of charge, they were selling them at the event. Twisted is always kind to members here and deserves it, I got one for our fearless leader Rf too if he wants it!

I went to the VIP event as well. I agree, I was a little disappointed with the setup, and the staff was about as unfriendly as you can get. The "security" was obnoxious, and rude. If Stephen doesn't want to sign, he will tell you and certainly not sign. One of these "security" tried to prevent King from signing for us outside the Bushnell, and King basically told him off, and still signed for us anyways.

When whomever was running the event inside the VIP first came out onto the microphone I was a little confused why he said "King signed 450 books today." Knowing, and looking around there was no way there were 450 people in the VIP portion of the event, now it is very annoying to here that had we bought a cheaper ticket, we still could have obtained our Stephen King signed Joyland books. Now granted, I'm not complaining about getting the photo-op with King. I know King doesn't enjoy doing them, although you could never tell from his demeanor in there. I just wish we had been told up-front that they were going to offer to sell signed books to other patrons. That, in my opinion, was pretty shady.

The actual interview at the Bushnell was great. King is always funny at these sorts of events, and the crowd, as well as myself, were pretty entertained.

You should absolutely stay (not just visit) the Stanley Hotel - make sure you're in the old part on top floor. My wife and I went and had a great time on the tour and with a couple spooky things that happened.

Also, I've noticed this thread is more of a 'what happened at an event' discussion (which is awesome!) rather than a 'good or great tips discussion'. I'd have to say I'm interested to hear about what has worked for more experienced folks at multiple events as far as getting time with s.k. or getting a book signed outside a formal signing line. I'm a complete rookie having been to only one event that had a signing line so far (and I'm heading to the Colorado event in Sept).

I second mcdonaldj's advice that you should plan to stay a night (or two) at The Stanley as long as you are going to be there anyway. It isn't all that big but I think you would want plenty of time to leisurely explore the place. I would also recommend that you reread THE SHINING before you go to get the details of the hotel in your mind. You will probably want to reread the book anyway before digging in to DOCTOR SLEEP. All the important things are there pretty much as King wrote them in the book. The fireplace in the lobby, the old elevator, the grand staircase, the ballroom, (they wouldn't let me go in to the kitchen but maybe you can talk your way in), even the linen closets on each floor and the ceiling access to the attic on the third floor are pretty much just as King wrote them. It has been a few years since I was there but it is an absolute must for a King fan and it would be a shame to be so close and not experience the place to the fullest.

Great advice. I booked for 1 night at the Stanley. I plan on arriving there before noon, touring the area and hotel, having cocktails and dinner, and staying the night. The only thing I didn't do (and I could change it), is to reserve room 217. They want quite a bit more for 217.

I think that there has been some renumbering of the rooms over the years so that room 217 is not the same as when the Kings stayed there. I don't know the details but I think either Bob (CRinVA) or Ralph knows which room is which.

I attended the Living History program last weekend at the Texas School Book Depository. They had Wesley Buell Frazier speaking. He is the fellow who drove Oswald to work on Nov. 22, 1963. I got him to sign my copy of 11.22.63. I don't think he had a clue what he was signing, but it makes for something different. I had the same book signed by Clint Hill who was the secret service agent that jumped on the back of the JFK car.

Eagerly anticipating the location of the third event. Even though it's likely, I would be disappointed if it was somewhere in New England since there's already one in New York. I'm thinking either D.C. or somewhere in the South, maybe near Florida since that's where he stays in the summer anyways. I guess we'll find out soon.

In retrospect some things are clear:

Book release date is Tuesday (almost always Tuesdays now) 9/24/2013. Without a doubt King would be in NYC for the book promo. He would hit the morning shows and perhaps one late night show. I am surprised he agreed to an actual fan event, but it does seem SK is trying to help promote his son's book (Double Feature-Owen King). A great book, and to now unheralded. Similar to the Canada event in that both Stephen and Owen appear (having been to the LA event, without SK only a few dozen people showed up to see, and hear Owen-a shame actually).
King ties some Colorado event in for the Shining locale. Not at the Stanley (Overlook) hotel nearby but at a function that benefits book-readers and and a local society.
Whatever the third event is; it will not be in Florida for Red Sox Spring Training. King is a huge Red Sox fan, but right now the Red Sox are in first place. Spring training in Florida for the Red Sox is ~2/2014. King is hanging around Maine until ~November 2013. If the Red Sox went to and won the World Series that would be in very late October.
Now...speculate.

I am not saying it WILL BE Florida, however it is possibility.
I have had some difficulty pin-pointing exactly when King usually heads to FL for winter and spring.
I have seen that he has in past been in Bangor with Family for Thanksgiving some years.
However he has been in FL in November previously as you can see if you look back to around post #1500 or so in this thread.
( 11/22/63 signing in Sarasota mid November 2011 )...... so , I can dream !
JUST SAYING: Would be convenient for me and he would need to hold off until I get back from Boulder.
BUT: When is he headed to Europe?

It strikes me as odd that he is doing two of the US events a day apart.

You gotta wonder if the third event will be soon after the two currently known US events after that, but before the Toronto event.

Perhaps he wants to get the book tour out of the way by the end of October, and then enjoy his winter vacation.

What is the deal with releasing the dates/locations one at a time and only AFTER the earlier event has sold out? How does that benefit the tour - it would sell out regardless?

As per Marsha they were still hashing out plans with the venues a couple weeks ago, hense the delay in releasing the details.

TwistedNadine
07-23-2013, 06:36 AM
Regardless of where the next venue is its obvious this is not the "usual" book signing tour but has changed up completely. Based on these two events (Im not including Canada as one of the events as it doesnt seem to be an official part of the Dr Sleep "tour") he wont be going to B&N Atlanta or a Walmart or any other signing venue.

Im curious as to why they are distributing the pre-signed books versus selling them? Maybe the idea was to guarantee sold out events by offering a "free" signed book. But wouldnt they make just as much if not more by selling them at the events?

Well, I booked and paid for my trip, so I suppose barring calamity, I'll be arriving in Denver on Monday. I'll be staying at a hotel in Estes park one night, The Stanley another night, and in a cottage at Chautauqua park that is ~150' from the auditorium-basically stumbling distance.

Just had another unexpected ADRENALINE RUSH as I found a few more tickers came available.
There were at first just a few standard with no option for premium...... and then while perusing
another ADRENALINE RUSH kicked in when two premium seats appeared right next to other single seats I already had...
Nimble fingers jumped into action and now have a match for the single best seat I had previously... as well as another next to other single.

No advantage to premium seats that I can tell you. I was 5th row center in Hartford...yes, you are up close, but in an interview/reading, where you sit really makes not a whit of difference in my opinion.

It did not note which tickets were refunded so I assume they are the last two.

The commonality could be Name, Address CC#, email, maybe (but unlikely) IP address or some combination of the info.
I would also guess that if a person printed the tickets, the UPC or QR code will be scanned upon entrance and the person will be denied entry. The seats can be the same, but the UPC/QR is the ultimate arbiter.

Here's how it worked when he did the UtD event at the Time Center...

When you walked in you got a paper. It told you whether you got a signed book or not. After the event, you took your signed book ticket into the lobby and traded it for a signed copy. Traded isn't the right word, you had to BUY the signed copy, but it was cover price. This actually worked out quite well because you would not beleieve how many people didn't buy a book. This actually left plenty available for anyone that wanted one.

I'm hoping they do the same thing here.

the difference here is everyone is getting a free book. I don't think to many people will be passing up a free book.

It was very similar in savannah Georgia. 1200 people lined up to see SK and only 340 bought the book to get it signed. They had 400 books available for signature. It was awesome! because they let us buy extra line passes!

So if I went with two used tickets and two unused you think they would give me four books?

The one thing i did learn from the Hartford event is if you keep asking questions they tend to over plan the event! they had signs everywhere stating no signed books dont even ask SK to sign a book. they had body guards, they had staff everywhere.

One guy carried his book around and told staff members that he was going to ask SK to sign for his friend. I saw the staff member proceed directly to the bodyguard and remind him about the signing policy!!!! sometimes its better to let things play out and not draw attention to their lack of planning/details. ( I carried a book around but did not draw attention to it)

I would think that it would be a nightmare to try and hand out 600 books after an event.

Ok.....you have to explain that to me.....
If in advance the audience members knew they did not receive a signed book, particularly if there were hundreds of "unlucky", non recipients, the chance of disruption would be greater. People booing. Human nature. Every event is different. Patrick and I were surprised at the King event for Lisey's Story; many people were nonplussed-indifferent about buying a signed book. That event was a little different in most ever way from what I observe in today's events. People seem to be more anxious.

This event was something special for me, the location was an

I would bet like 99.9 that if you show up to an event you'll get a book...I doubt very much he'd stop signing at 400 when they know 600 people will be there...especially after he signed well until the night at Harvard a few years back.

But - that gives the event an 'out' in case something goes wrong and they do end up short of signed books.

And, like RF said, there will be plenty of people who strangely don't even care about the book, who will attend and leave.

Open question, will King sign copies of his Bachman books? Does he sign them as Stephen King or as Bachman? I have a copy of Rage that I would love to have signed if I ever had the chance, but I would have to have him turn me down and only later find out it's something he doesn't/wont do.

I understand the reticence as a result of the school shootings and what not, but for me it's just a rare book that I would love to have signed. I didn't realize that he had distanced himself so completely from Rage (Though I know he took it out of print, of course)

I probably should have advised bringing a back up book in case King did decline. If he signs it great, if not hand him another title. I would however (if it was me) avoid having him personalize it. Dating it is cool, but the value at a later time will be more flatsigned than inscribed to "Waldo..."

I heard these rumors some time ago but he didnt seem to have any problem signing copies of Rage at either the Sav signing nor the George Mason signing. I saw 6 different copies signed from those events but none were also signed Bachman. Dont know if anyone asked him to sign Bachman, tho.

It was my understanding that the more ink the author spilled on the page the greater provenance it had and the higher the value? So far I've striven to have all of my Joe Hill / Owen King stuff personalized, did I miss the memo on that one or was I just misinformed?

John

Yes I think is correct and was discussed in another thread, too. My preference is a LONG UNIQUE inscription, or one that is inscribed to an associate or celebrity. Second to that is flatsigned but DATED. Third would be flatsigned with no date. The generic personalized "To ____ Best, Stephen King" are last on my list but if dated with a early pub date or if a hard to find edition Ill go for it if the price is right. Key here is If The Price Is Right. I personally wont pay premium for an edition generically personalized to someone else.

What sometimes gets lost in this discussion is your intention for the book. Mainly, is the book's "value" to you what it means to you personally or what you can resell it for? I have no intention on selling any of my books. The exception being if I upgrade condition or if I happen to get a duplicate in a batch.

I don't collect flatsigned or inscribed books. Only the S/L's. However, if I had the occasion to have King hand sign a book, the value to me is in the fact that I stood there and maybe chatted with him for a moment and got him to sign something for me. It would be more meaningful to me if there was a personalized description and a date to go along with the signature. For someone who was just going to turn around and put it on eBay the next day, perhaps there is more value without the personalization.

I'm getting a little worried about Toronto. I called the other day, and they are still saying King will be signing for "1 hour" and will sign up to 2 books per person. We all know, he will sit there and sign the 2 books for everyone (Especially since Owen said he was already going to be there for everyone, and I don't see King leaving without his son), so the 1 hour is not a concern. However, Mrs. Mod is now saying the logistics have not been fully squared away, so I'm not sure where that event stands. Anyone call up to Toronto recently and heard anything different?

I doubt they will have it figured out until the day of the event. In fact even the day of the event things will change last minute. My advice is to bring extra books with you and have in mind the order of priority so at the very least you get the highest priority book signed but are ready if you can get more signed.

Can anyone reccomend a good hotel close to the NYC venue?
What dates are you considering? I was finding rates seem to be UP around that time (Sept 24th) for some reason.
There are a number of good hotels near that area and most hotels in NYC would work as it is very easy to get around and to that location.
As far as nearby a less expensive one I've used is The Park Savoy. Others you might consider New York Hilton Midtown.(stayed there May 31st for $128 plus fees) it was nice.
Also have enjoyed stays at the Ameritania Hotel (right next to Lettermans show) and The Park Central ( a busy place).
Also nearby that I can not vouch for are :The Moderne
Holiday Inn NEW YORK CITY-MIDTOWN-57TH ST,
Hudson Hotel (gets some varied reviews)
Salisbury Hotel (212) 246-1300 nycsalisbury.com 123 W 57th St, New York, NY 10019
Empire Hotel(212) 265-7400 empirehotelnyc.com 44 W 63rd St, New York, NY 10023

I wound up using a service called Airbnb which connects travelers with individuals renting out their apt or room in their apt.
I actually found one which was literally right next door to John Jay College however the guy renting changed the minimum stay required to more than I will be in NYC.

Ended up getting a room at a place called De Vinci Hotel. Overall reviews were good. $240/night. 2 long blocks and 2 short blocks from John Jay, so an easy walk. They accept cancellations until 1 week prior without a fee, so got a room. I'm going to check AirBNB and see what I can find. My sister-in-law uses it often and has had good success.

Also, the price ARE way up. It's ridiculous. Like the Holiday Inn right next door advertises for $124/night. Actual rate for the 24th is $350. EVERY hotel I looked at was like that.

This is just my opinion, but the more we call and the more we ask questions, the more they have time to think and plan about their event. For those of us who bought extra tickets hoping to get a signed book, i would not have alerted them to that fact. They then get the idea to hand out the 200 signed copies at the end and we wasted all that money for unsigned books that we are getting in the beginning! The best thing is not give the planners more ideas!!! At the last event they didnt even put the books on the table, because one of the group said they were going to "grab" a box and run. So guess what they locked up all the books. It was just a joke, but it makes people over plan!

Everyone calling (as mentioned) just fucks things up. These venues and charities have in most cases never done something like this before. The only freaks repetitively calling are people like us. The calls actually help them figure out how to make sure collectors can't intelligently tip the odds in their favor for a signed book.
Stop fucking things up for everyone. Be surreptitious, but don't ruin the deal for everyone.

I went to the Harvard signing in 2006 for Best Short Stories, at the same venue.

Someone posted that it seats 805? That night he signed for everybody in the building (who waited) and I always wondered what that number was....I don't know about 800, but it was a looooong line, and I was at the end. Yet, he signed for everyone.

I was also annoyed that I missed the onsale for the Dr Sleep event - but when I saw the whole "signed books will be randomly sprinkled" I lost interest. I'm too old and crotchety to deal with these silly reindeer games.

Totally off-topic, but the new book "Night Film" by Marisha Pessl is definiitley worth a look. I read an advance copy and it was very well done, and I think it's fair to say it has a King vibe. The first 300 pages were the creepiest I've read since "Pet Sematery" (in tone, not subject).

I called again today. In fact I called about every ten minutes just to see if the answers kept changing. There will be 100 books signed, there will be 600 signed, all books - signed and unsigned - will be handled out as guests arrive one book per ticket, one book per person not per ticket and handed out as guests are leaving, unsigned books given out as you arrive signed book as you leave, books will be on the chairs - pick your seat and get a book, after the event you have to stand in line to trade your ticket in for the book, oh and King changed his mind and will be signing in person after all...

Not really. I just wanted to ruffle Crow feathers which obviously isnt very hard to do. Ill be sure not to call again and fuck it up for everyone

I called PEN Toronto yesterday. That's twice in four months, I'm really pushing it! The man I spoke to was the event manager. He was super friendly and seemed to be as excited as I was (we are!) about the event. We talked King a bit and then talked about the event. There will be pre-signed copies of Doctor Sleep. There will also be a signing after the Q&A and King will sign one book. Don't push your luck with more yadda yadda. One is the limit.

I plan on bringing my Mondo poster of The Dark Tower to be signed. It is already signed and numbered by Drew Struzan so I figure the addition of King's signature will make it look even more amazing framed on my wall!!

IMO, having King sign a poster for you (instead of a 1st edition book), is a bit like meeting Jesus and for a miracle you ask for piece (sic) for all mankind, and everyone gets laid, instead of all wars and violence ending...

Bringing a poster that he did not draw, seems like a bad idea.

Also..by the end of the night, that poster will be crushed, wrinkled, or ripped.

Bring a book, and bring something to protect it from getting bumped.

All that being said, I would consider bringing my Shining audition letter that I got in '77 to be signed.....it does have his name on it.

He may not sign that. He didn't write the book, he didn't do the art, and he effectively did not participate in the book.

Forget the poster. Rage is a good one but like the Crowness said bring a backup. The Doubleday 1sts are a good choice but ultimately having your fav novel signed in person is the best imo. Most likely it will end up being only one book per person but Ill be bringing extras just in case things change or an opportunity presents itself...

The chemistry does not seem to be there. Quote:

"However, the only real let-down is the chemistry – or lack thereof – between Andy (Kyle Secor) and Red (played by comedian Omid Djalili).

In the 1994 movie you’re willing the two friends to reunite But here, you don’t feel any kind of emotional release at all. This just goes to show that the punters are right – that only Morgan Freeman can play Red."

I known 3 of them for a longer time, Vincent Voss, Rona Walter, Kristina Lohfeld ...have seen them twice.

It was nice, they changed the reading program at the second event for me a little bit, so i hear something new.
Great event I came back home at 01:30 in the morning.... I went early !!!
