According to Bev Vincent, Stephen King has a new short story coming in the December issue of Playboy.

"MUTE--In a confession to a priest, a traveling salesman tells of his encounter on the Maine turnpike with a deaf-mute hitchhiker to whom he rants about his adulterous wife. "

On Stephen King's website today:

"In November, two new stories by Stephen will be appearing--"Ayana," in the Fall issue of The Paris Review, and "Mute," in the December issue of Playboy."

Another new King story!

Thanks John.
I for one was not familiar with The Paris Review (http://www.parisreview.com/). I checked their website and here is a blurb about them:

Founded in Paris by Harold L. Humes, Peter Matthiessen, and George Plimpton in 1953, The Paris Review began with a simple editorial mission: "Dear reader," William Styron wrote in a letter in the inaugural issue, "The Paris Review hopes to emphasize creative work—fiction and poetry—not to the exclusion of criticism, but with the aim in mind of merely removing criticism from the dominating place it holds in most literary magazines and putting it pretty much where it belongs, i.e., somewhere near the back of the book. I think The Paris Review should welcome these people into its pages: the good writers and good poets, the non-drumbeaters and non-axe-grinders. So long as they're good."

According to Liljas:

I asked Playboy for info about Mute and this is what they sent me:

MUTE: A traveling salesman picks up a hitchhiker and pours out his heart about his wife's infidelity -- with surprising results -- in this short story by Stephen King

They also told me that it will cover 11 pages in the magazine.

Cheers Matt and thanks RF!! It wouldn't bother me paying the same cost in postage, it'd just be so cool to get hold of them period. I tried to get Playboy a couple of years ago for a feature by Kevin Smith...but couldn't seem to find that edition over here in the UK.

I didn’t think I would ever tell this story. My wife told me not to; she said no one would believe it and I’d only embarrass myself. What she meant, of course, was that it would embarrass her. “What about Ralph and Trudy?” I asked her. “They were there. They saw it too.”
“Trudy will tell him to keep his mouth shut,” Ruth said, “and your brother won’t need much persuading.”
This was probably true. Ralph was at that time superintendent of New Hampshire School Administrative Unit 43, and the last thing a Department of Education bureaucrat from a small state wants is to wind up on one of the cable news outlets, in the end-of-the-hour slot reserved for UFOs over Phoenix and coyotes that can count to ten. Besides, a miracle story isn’t much good without a miracle worker, and Ayana was gone.
But now my wife is dead—she had a heart attack while flying to Colorado to help out with our first grandchild and died almost instantly. (Or so the airline people said, but you can’t even trust them with your luggage these days.) My brother Ralph is also dead—a stroke while playing in a golden-ager golf tournament—and Trudy is gaga. My father is long gone; if he were still alive, he’d be a centenarian. I’m the last one standing, so I’ll tell the story. It is unbelievable, Ruth was right about that, and it means nothing in any case—miracles never do, except to those lucky lunatics who see them everywhere. But it’s interesting. And it is true. We all saw it.

They would have no way to know. Ari, contact Mindy at CD and provide a pic of the limitation page. I'm sure she will take care of you.

Patrick
10-31-2007, 08:41 PM
I agree with RF. CD would have no way of knowing who has books purchased on the after-market. They do say on their site to just email them directly and let them know.

Now... who wants to lend me $300?

Ari_Racing
11-01-2007, 04:43 AM
Yes yes. I know. :)

BUt since I'm not going to buy the S/L (and I'll probably sell my S/L), it's pointless. :)

Thanks for the advice anyway

Hows that midnight?

Well. This November it will be 2 years ago, if Im not mistaken, that Vol 1 was up for pre-order and at the time it was supposed to be a "Spring Release" and almost a year to the date of pre-paying for it did it arrive. It may sound like Im being pissy or trivial, and maybe I am, but it just annoyed me. :nope:

Edited for an afterthought:Not to mention I dont really want to lay out $300.00 right now.

Matt

Ari_Racing

I read it too and I LOVED IT!

SOME LIGHT SPOILERS!!!

It made me remember a lot about The woman in the room and also kept me thinking about how we deal with a person that is sick and would probably die. Both my grandparents died several years ago and I remember that I barely saw them during the last month of their lives. It's like my family tried to avoid me from seing them so bad. I don't think that a kiss would have heal 'em, but I do think that such love act can only have a positive effect. King reflected that in an outstanding way.

This just in from Donald M. Grant Publishers...

UPDATE - THE LITTLE SISTERS OF ELURIA

Two years ago, I announced that Donald M. Grant, Publisher,
Inc. will be publishing a book containing THE LITTLE SISTERS
OF ELURIA and the revised edition of THE GUNSLINGER
(which was published by Viking). Stephen King has chosen to
title this combined volume THE LITTLE SISTERS OF ELURIA.

The book is illustrated by Michael Whelan and will contain
new art as well as the art originally published in the first edition
of THE GUNSLINGER.

We have now received from Michael all the additional art for
the book and can start working on design and production.

Price, schedule and other details have not been set and when
further information is available it will be posted on our website
and published in our newsletter. We expect that this will be
announced in the beginning of 2008.

We are not taking orders, reservations or putting people on a
waiting list.

Please do not call or email us for further details as we will just
refer you to our web site and suggest you remain subscribed to
our email newsletter.

Thank you.

Randall Flagg

Ruthful
11-18-2007, 09:36 PM
Okay, I just skimmed through the online table of contents for the December issue and found not a mention of Stephen King.

Although, I did find out that there's going to be a retrospective of Alex Haley's work for Playboy back when he was a journalist and an article about an Iranian sex tape-SCORE-in next month's issue, so chances are that I'll buy it.

:nana:

That is, if I can find a Barnes & Noble that still stocks copies of Playboy.

Losers.

Randall Flagg
11-19-2007, 12:46 AM
Rest assured the story is in there. Every B&N out here stocks Playboy. Not sure where you are from, but it's considered rather pedestrian this way.

Ruthful
11-19-2007, 02:26 AM
No, they do stock it, just not this particular store for some reason.

It might have something to do with sales demand-I'm guessing-because they still carry Loaded, as well as a host of fine art/photography magazines that have nude models.

I'll just check out my local one in Park Slope. I was kind of disappointed when they stopped carrying The Free American. It was a totally insane pro-militia, anti-government magazine, but still a kind of interesting counterpoint to the pseudo-Marxist, lefty, statist rags they display, e.g. AdBusters, The Washington Report on the Middle East, Z, etc... It seems like half the magazine rack these days is filled with crap that's a variant on Modern Bride, or those stupid teen magazines.

Anyway, I'm getting off on a tangent here. I'll try and buy a copy when I head to downtown Bklyn. tomorrow afternoon.

jhanic
11-19-2007, 04:50 AM

I've been meaning to do this for some time, but have been unable to, due to varying circumstances and reasons.

His stuff is amazing. It was a thrill to see it up close.

Ruthful
12-02-2007, 09:56 PM
Okay, I read the story on the subway as I was on my way home from a Bob Saget Broadway play.

I have to say that it was pretty good. Not as good as the one that was published in Esquire earlier this year, but not bad overall. I think he has at least a few more short story collections in him.

Mr. Rabbit Trick
12-03-2007, 03:13 AM
I can't believe that there is no discussion about this story, especially the ending.

The story is fine on its own, but when you look at the illustrations, they imply that Monette IS the hitchhiker.

Was he hinting at this when he said the "extra Hail Marys and Our Fathers on his way home in the private confessional of his own car".

Bev Vincent
12-03-2007, 04:20 AM
I like the way Playboy illustrated the story, with the dual-sided cutout. The story was okay, but not one that's bound to stick with me for long, I think. A sort of interesting exploration of guilt and confession, but somewhat predictable.

Ruthful
12-03-2007, 12:23 PM
I think you're taking the artist's rendering of that figure too literally, RabbitTrick.

BTW, I loved the illustrations as well.

King always lucks out with those, except in the case of Bernie Wrightson and Wolves of the Calla.

Bleeccch!

:borg:

CyberGhostface
12-08-2007, 06:06 PM
I hope they release a trade version as well sometime in the future. Maybe the S/L could be released earlier and be of a higher quality in terms of production (like the artist's editions of the last three DT books) so there'll be more incentive for the collectors whereas the normal fans can just wait and buy a normal version without plunking down a hundred dollars.

Via Lilja:

McSweeney's 27 comes to you as three separate books in a windowed slipcase, presenting six different possible faces to the world, in order to best match your home décor. Book One plunges into the grayish, faintly understood area of the art world involving oddly drawn objects coupled with uncertainly spelled text. Book Two is a never-before-seen 72-page sketchbook by the legendary Art Spiegelman. Book Three collects new stories by Stephen King, Jim Shepard, and fiveish others.

The issue will probably be out during the first half of 2008.

The story is "A Very Tight Place."

Randall Flagg

I edited the thread to include the story title.
Synopsis of the story-borrowed from Cemetary Dance (http://www.cemeterydance.com/), who are offering pre-orders of the magazine:

Here is Stephen King's description of his brand new, never-before-published short story:

"Let me give you an example. There's a story that's written, it's been accepted for publication by a magazine. It's called 'A Very Tight Place.' And we live part of the year down in Florida, and I have a walk that I go on every day, that's fairly isolated. Which is good, because people don't bother me or anything. I get a chance to read a little bit, to think a little bit. And one day while I was on that walk, I saw one of these Porta-Potties. You know what I mean? They stand up, and I thought you know what? There's nobody around ... the house that it belonged to was under construction, and the workers had all gone home for the day, and I still had a mile to go to get home, and I thought, you know what? I'm going to go in there and I'm going to take a leak. That'll be good. Why not? It's there. I'll get comfortable. And I did. I went in, and the thing had been undercut, not a lot, just the tiniest little bit. So that when I stepped into the Porta-Pottie, I could feel this thing rock a little bit on its base. And I thought to myself, you know, if ... if one of those things fell over on its door, and a person was inside, that person would be in trouble. And immediately I'm thinking Poe, The Premature Burial, I'm thinking about all the buried alive stories that I've ever read, and I'm thinking, but I've never read a story about anyone trapped in a Porta-Pottie. And there are so many interesting things that you can do with people who are in tight places, people's feelings of claustrophobia are easy to bring out. I'm not a particularly claustrophobic person myself, but I thought, 'Oh, my God, this is wonderful!'"

Over on the message board, Paul Campbell wonders if I’m washing my hands of short fiction (http://joehillfiction.informe.com/viewtopic.php?t=706). The short answer on that is, no way.
It’s true that at the moment I’m knee-deep in a novel that I didn’t expect to be writing, and having a hell of a good time with it, thanks. And until I turn in the new book, I won’t have a lot of time for short fiction. But I recently collaborated on a novella with my Paw, so that’s coming down the pike. Breaking news!
Recently Joe Hill slipped and mentioned a collaboration with his "Paw".

This book is being done by Gauntlet Press.

www.Gauntletpress.com (http://www.gauntletpress.com/)

Here is the official announcement:

He Is Legend
Richard Matheson

Coming February 2009
Just say the name and the memories come flooding back -- Somewhere in Time, Duel, The Shrinking Man, I Am Legend, and countless more. He's one of the greatest storytellers of our time -- or any time.

Now Gauntlet Press has assembled He Is Legend: Celebrating Richard Matheson, a spectacular anthology of original, never-before published stories by today's best writers -- stories set in Richard Matheson's own fictional universes, and published with Mr. Matheson's complete cooperation!

And, among the many contributions to the book is the first collaboration ever between Stephen King and his son Joe Hill, the novella "Throttle" their take on Matheson's classic "Duel." This is, obviously, a once-in-a-lifetime publishing event as its father and sons first collaboration. Both Stephen King and Joe Hill will be signing both the numbered and lettered editions.

Other contributors to this anthology, edited by Christopher Conlon, include F. Paul Wilson, Joe Lansdale, Whitley Strieber, Richard Christian Matheson, William F. Nolan, Gary Braunbeck, Thomas Monteleone, John Shirley and an introduction by Ramsey Campbell (additional contributors will be announced at a later date).

And, as an added bonus, He Is Legend features the original full-length screenplay "Conjure Wife" -- over 20,000 never-before published words by Richard Matheson himself, in collaboration with the late-Charles Beaumont that was filmed at "Burn, Witch Burn."

Cover art and six interior illustrations by Matheson's favorite artist Harry O. Morris.

PLUS (stuff you may not have gotten from the press release)

F. Paul Wilson has written a sequel to "The Distributor"; Joe Lansdale a sequel to "Prey." Whitley Strieber has given us an original novella inspired by Matheson's stories in general, while Richard Christian Matheson has penned a short tale inspired by "Legion of Plotters." John Shirley has created a sequel to "Somewhere in Time," while Mick Garris has offered a prequel to "I Am Legend." Lots more, too--Gary A. Braunbeck, William F. Nolan, John Maclay, Michael Arnzen, Thomas F. Monteleone, Barry Hoffman--and one or two surprises still to be announced!

Sorry, for $150 it's a little too rich for my blood, especially it being just a novella, along with other authors I'm unfamiliar with. Holding out hope that Scribner and whoever is JH's publisher would want to capitalize on this event, and release a mass-market hardcover of the novella (a smallish thing like The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon). That would totally be awesome.

Bev Vincent
03-24-2008, 10:44 AM
Here's a sampling of what some of the other authors have done:

F. Paul Wilson's novel THE KEEP was made into a movie. Joe Lansdale has written some wonderful novels, including a hilarious comedy/crime series featuring a blue collar worker and his best friend, a gay black man (Hap and Leonard). Whitley Strieber wrote the novel that became the movie THE HUNGER (along with a non-fiction account of his alien abduction: COMMUNION). Mick Garris is the director of THE STAND, THE SHINING, etc. Tom Monteleone writes for Cemetery Dance magazine and is the publisher at Borderlands Press (they first published King's novella "Stationary Bike."). William F. Nolan wrote LOGAN'S RUN.

It's not for the squeamish. In fact, it would make a good (albeit very long) entry in the WHC gross-out contest! The story is over 70 pages long and features the first (to my recollection) gay protagonist in a King story. I read it in two sittings and I liked it a lot. Another Florida tale.

This is from Gauntlet Press' newest newsletter:

Unsigned limited edition: We will have a small print run for an unsigned limited edition of He Is Legend. We won't be taking orders until the fall, however. You will receive a newsletter announcing the unsigned limited at least 3-days before we officially announce this edition of the book. In this way those who ordered the signed editions from us will get some preferential treatment (though we can't, of course, stop the posting of announcements of this edition on websites when the time comes). We will not take any orders until we officially announce this edition in our newsletter (we have yet to price the book). You may order copies of this edition even if you have also ordered copies of the signed numbered or lettered editions. However, while you can order as many copies as you desire we reserve the right to limit the quantity purchased. Remember, ignore the first confirmation you receive from our server when we send out the announcement.

I got this from Gauntlet today

Update on Gauntlet's *He Is Legend*

Why this list? He Is Legend is obviously a unique book, including the first
collaboration between father and son Stephen King and Joe Hill. We won't inundate
you with newsletters. We may send a monthly update or, if there is nothing new to
report, we might skip a month. But, there could be questions you want answered and
this is our way of communicating with all of those who purchased the book. You are
free to opt out of this newsletter (see the bottom to unsubscribe), but if you do
and something comes up you may be left unaware. For us communication is the key.

Please note - because of the newsletter software we use you will automatically be
receive our twice-monthly Gauntlet Press newsletter with general information on our
titles. You may, at any point, unsubscribe from either list. But, if you unsubscribe
from the main newsletter you will also not receive the HE IS LEGEND Newsletter
Updates and thus miss out on important updates on the book.

(1) Lottery for Lettered: There was justifiably confusion regarding the lettered
edition of the book. We received over 90 orders for the 52 copy lettered edition. We
cut off purchase of this edition on at midnight on March 31. We will conduct a
lottery for those who ordered the lettered edition and let you know whether you won
the lottery on or about May 1. We will send a message to DarkTower.com so word will
spread that the lottery has been held. Those who did not win the lottery will remain
on the waiting list and be contacted if anyone cancels their order. The signed
numbered edition is also sold out
and we have a waiting list.

(2)Credit cards expiring in 2008: The book will be published in late-February 2009
so we didn't expect everyone to have a 2009+ expiration date on their credit card.
However, it is your responsibility to contact us with your new expiration date when
you have it. We'll keep reminding you, but we need them before January 1. Just as
with credit cards that are declined if we don't receive your new expiration date you
go to the end of our waiting list and someone from the waiting list receives your
book.

(3) Those sending checks: Sometime in December we'll remind those who want to pay
via check to go ahead and send it in. Just as with credit cards that are declined if
we don't receive your check you go to the end of our waiting list and someone from
the waiting list receives your book.

(4) If you are on our waiting list and a copy of the lettered or signed numbered
becomes available we will charge your credit card (in the order we received orders).
Again, if is your
responsibility to cancel your order prior to January 1 if you want to do so. We want
to smoothly go ahead once we begin charging credit cards the first week in January.
You will NOT be contacted for permission to charge your card. We will, however,
email you to let you know you will be getting copy of the book if you are currently
on the waiting list.

(5) Response time: We were obviously inundated with orders (600+ orders in our inbox
the first day the book was announced). Those who regularly purchase from Gauntlet
know we normally respond within one day. It became impossible with so many orders to
process. We're caught up now and will respond in our normal timely fashion. If you
are on one of our waiting lists (or receiving this newsletter) and your email
address changes please provide us with the new address. Especially for those on our
waiting lists, we can't contact you if we are unaware of an email address change.

(6) Calling in with cc information: Those who requested to contact us
with your credit card information via phone please call in the afternoon (after 10AM
MST time), including weekends. As we've said above, without your credit card, come
January you will go to the end of the waiting list.

(7) Automatic confirmations: Those who have ordered from us in the past are reminded
in each newsletter to ignore the first "notice" you receive. Those are automatically
generated by the server. The "official" confirmation is the second one you receive,
signed by publisher Barry Hoffman. We apologize for any confusion the first notice
may have created. Unfortunately that is the way our server generates the automatic
response.

(8) Unsigned limited edition: We will have a small print run for an unsigned limited
edition of He Is Legend. We won't be taking orders until the fall, however. You will
receive a newsletter announcing the unsigned limited at least 3-days before we
officially announce this edition of the book. In this way those who ordered the
signed editions from us
will get some preferential treatment (though we can't, of course, stop the posting
of announcements of this edition on websites when the time comes). We will not take
any orders until we officially announce this edition in our newsletter (we have yet
to price the book). You may order copies of this edition even if you have also
ordered copies of the signed numbered or lettered editions. However, while you can
order as many copies as you desire we reserve the right to limit the quantity
purchased. Remember, ignore the first confirmation you receive from our server when

First up is Throttle, the brand new novella by Stephen King and his son Joe Hill! That's right! This is a collaboration between Stephen King and his son. The protagonists are father-son members of a motorcycle gang that's being chased through the desert by an 18-wheel tanker truck. This explosive novella builds to a shocking ending that has the literary world talking! Movie producer Nick Wechsler (The Fountain, 25th Hour) has optioned the film rights and he compared the story to Steven Spielberg's first movie, Duel.
Second up on this Horror Double Feature is Duel by Richard Matheson, the classic novella about a man stalked through the desert by a killer tractor trailer. This novella was, of course, adapted by Matheson into a screenplay that became the first feature film directed by Steven Spielberg.
Together these two tales of terror in the desert come together to make Road Rage, and the results are sure to be absolutely terrifying!

Gauntlet is now taking orders for the unsigned He Is Legend:

Many of you will be interested in this bit of news... W (http://www.gauntletpress.com/cgi-bin/gauntletpress/perlshop.cgi?ACTION=ENTER&thispage=HeisLegend&ORDER_ID=!ORDERID!)e are pleased to announce that we are now taking orders for the unsigned limited edition of HE IS LEGEND. Only 400 copies will be available. Although this edition is being pre-sold on Amazon.com, there are two main reasons it will be in your best interest in order directly from Gauntlet at this time. For one, it is listed on Amazon for $10 more than we are selling it. And secondly, we are sending Amazon copies of the book only after we have filled the orders for our own customers. This means Amazon could end up having more orders placed than they will be able to fill. Right now there is no limit on the number of copies you can order, although we reserve the right to limit the number anyone can purchase (we will let you know if there is any concern after you place your order). As with the signed editions we won't be charging credit cards (or asking for checks) until later in the year/early January 2009.
Payment Reminder: We will need your new expiration date if your credit cards expires in 2008, as we are not charging the cards until the first week in January. Any cards with a 2008 expiration date will go to the back of the waiting list (as will any credit cards declined for any reason). Remember, you can always pay by check if you think this may pose a problem. We'll start accepting those in late-November or early-December.
Lastly, we've just received tipsheets signed by Stephen King and Joe Hill. The tipsheets for the lettered edition will now go to Richard Matheson for his signature. The tipsheets for other authors (there are two tipsheets circulating) are making their way around the country and we should have them all in about a month. Click here to order the unsigned limited edition, or to learn more about HE IS LEGEND (http://www.gauntletpress.com/cgi-bin/gauntletpress/perlshop.cgi?ACTION=ENTER&thispage=HeisLegend&ORDER_ID=!ORDERID!)

This specially priced 10th-anniversary trade paperback edition of Bag of Bones features bonus text from Stephen King and, according to the publisher, is only available for fall 2008! It's King's most gripping and unforgettable novel--a No. 1 bestseller around the world and to this day Scribner's bestselling King title--a tale of grief, of love's enduring bonds, and of haunting secrets of the past. The anniversary edition includes a special Q&A with King where he talks about ghosts, secrets, and being alive.

Too bad this looks to be only a paperback. But on the other hand, there doesn't appear to be any fiction by King (like the deleted scenes in the illustrated edition of 'Salem's Lot), only an interview.

Well, the only one I had read prior to the collection was the Death of John Hamilton...

From Lilja's review, "The New York Times..." sounds like an interesting story (of course it does, it's King we're talking about, not Koontz, heh-heh!) but, as he said, a bit like "Sorry, Right Number." But it also seems somewhat similar to "Harvey's Dream" (also in Just After Sunset).
Also I thought "The New York Times..." was a novella, but it's only 31/2 pages. The second shortest tale in Just After Sunset. I believe Graduation Afternoon is shorter. Or maybe it's the other way around.

Novella-length stories, it looks like, are The Gingerbread Girl, N., and A Very Tight Place.

Correct, plus Stationary Bike and The Things They Left Behind.

mae

Those are also novella-length? I read Stationary Bike a few years ago and I recall it being a regular short-story length. I have not read The Things They Left Behind.

Here are the word counts for the stories....

Gingerbread Girl - 21,430
A Very Tight Place - 20,450
Stationary Bike - 13,320
Things They Left Behind - 11,600

Any more? How about Ayana - 6,240 :)

DanishCollector

Oops, 3 1/2, that's right. Stationary Bike was called a novella back then, but maybe it isn't always as easy to categorize. Tales like Umney's Last Case, for instance, is technically a long story, but can also be seen as a novella.

Ooh, I dunno. They're getting that way. OK, not that many.... I'm thinking mainly of that long edition of Salem's Lot that came out a year or two ago.

(Actually it might be longer than that. Time has become very soft for me. Great book though. )

This was in the newest newsletter from Gauntlet about He Is Legend:

We have now received signed tipsheets from all those involved with He Is Legend: An Anthology Celebrating Richard Matheson. In about two weeks we'll be contacting about a dozen customers on our waiting list to let them know they will be getting a copy of the signed limited edition of this extraordinary anthology. Keep in mind that most of those on our waiting list won't be contacted again until we begin charging credit cards the first week in January.

If you've been putting off ordering the unsigned edition it's best to order now. We've had numerous requests from dealers without having approached them on our own - the word is out and demand is high!

For those who had credit cards with 2008 expiration dates, please contact us as soon as you receive your new expiration date. Come January 2009 if we don't have your new expiration date you have to be put at the end of our waiting list.

It looks like they're right on schedule!

On a seperate note, has there been surprisingly little talk about this story? Other than a couple of advance reviews, I haven't heard anything from the "average" fan. Am I missing something?

I just finished the story in my proof of Just After Sunset. Think of a rewrite of "Sorry, Right Number" from Nightmares and Dreamscapes, but a lot more sophisticated. It's short, but I did enjoy it.

why don't you call them first and if they have them ask them to put them on hold for you. tell them you're coming from out of town and when you'll be here. they would probably do that. it's worth the phone call i would think.

i agree, i would have preferred a hardcover as well but i guess they couldn't justify it. oh, and amazon seriously broke the street date on this. the publication date is still 10/21 according to both their site and b&n (and other sites i've looked at). wonder if they will get in trouble for this? :orely:
