These Best/Greatest tournaments have been a hit on our forum so I thought we would continue the festivities with a tournament to determine the best TV series of all time. With blessing from feev, we are ready to start our nominating process.

This will be a tad different from past such tournaments, but similar in a way to our hugely popular annual Constant Reader Awards. During the nominating phase we will be nominating our favorite TV series based on the decade they premiered (consult IMDb (http://www.imdb.com/) or Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page) for that). TV series have been around a long time, so I think this would give equal weight to older shows not necessarily fresh in our minds. So each person gets to nominate at most six series, one from each decade (1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s - excluding any 2010 series, please). Label your nominations like so:

1950s: TITLE
1960s: TITLE
1970s: TITLE
1980s: TITLE
1990s: TITLE
2000s: TITLE

Once enough candidates have been nominated, each decade will undergo a tournament like we're all accustomed to from past All Time tournaments. When the best TV series from each decade has been determined, a round-robin playoff between the six shows will commence, giving us The Best TV Series of All Time.

Should be fun.

ZOMG!! Awesome, AWESOME idea!!

I must go and make some lists! Apart from 2000 which is Lost all the way

Are we talking premiere date or run date? Shows like 24, West Wing and Sopranos all started 98/99 but mostly ran after 2000. What decade would Simpsons be considered? Because it premiered in what...86? 87? But it's popularity was clearly peaked in 1990s

Darkthoughts
11-01-2010, 08:51 AM
It says "decade they premiered" in the first post

mae
11-01-2010, 08:59 AM
Should be by premiere date. I realize there will be some issues like The Sopranos, but to make it easy let's stick to the date of the premiere of the first episode.

So, what are the nominating rules? One at a time? Can we each nominate more than one per decade?

Jean
11-01-2010, 09:36 AM
I am not even sure what counts as TV series. Does Fawlty Towers? Black Adder? Jeeves and Wooster?

turtlex
11-01-2010, 09:38 AM
I would count those all as TV series, Jean. UK / BBC series, but series none-the-less.

Question : Dating the series? <edit> Sorry. I see you answered that. Debut year. Thank you.

Okay, so ... I nominate :
1970s : The Mary Tyler Moore Show
1990s : Buffy The Vampire Slayer

More to come for the other decades.

I suppose you can say this... I hope they won't disqualify it because of that

Oh, see - we saw them in the US ( usually on PBS ) as a regular series.

mae

Honestly, Blackadder is more of a mini-series structurally, but due to it being a weird British product where they name seasons "series" let us officially proclaim it a series. :)

Here's three... works of art (I have never seen them on television, so do not dare to use any specific terminology) I would love to see nominated:

Jeeves and Wooster
Fawlty Towers
Black Adder

- in that order. I would like to nominate as many of them as I can in compliance with the rules, and then I'll hope my friends will nominate the other[s]

will you help me to sort this out, please? http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/mishemplushem/Facilitation/0134-bear.gif

Wow this is extremely hard. I did find this link (http://www.crazyabouttv.com/decades/1990s.html)and it helps - just substitute the other decades to get all decades from the 50's to the 00's. I did get carreid away with this but had loads of fun!

1950's
My Pick The Three Stooges - nyuk, nyuk, nyuk

I also considered

I Love Lucy (classic Comedy from the Queen of Comedy)
Bonanza (a Family Fave on Sunday nights at 9pm)
Red Skeleton (Humor ahead of its time)
The Rifleman (Chuck Conners at his best)
The Honeymoners (Hey Ralph...)
Dragnet (the story you're about to hear is true. Only the names have been changed to protect the innocent)
The Twilight Zone (You are about to enter another dimension)

1960's
MY Pick Gilligan's Island (Hey little Buddy..)

I also considered

Addams Family (They're creepy and they're kooky, mysterious and spooky, they're all together ooky, The Addams Family!),
Batman ("POW!", "BANG!", "THUD!", ),
Beverly Hillbillies (poor mountaineer barely kept his family fed)
F-Troop (totally inane humor)
Jonny Quest (one of the 1st Prime time Animated Series)
McHale's Navy (Tim Conway at his bumbling best)
Smother's Brothers Comedy Hour (pushing the network censorship buttons weekly),
The Wild Wild West (reprised by Will Smith decades later)
The Munsters (competition for The Addams Family)
The Rat Patrol (commandos, jeeps, 50 cal machine guns - what more is needed)
Dark Shadows (Barnabus Jones the original TV Vampire)
Get Smart (Missed it by that much),
Hawaii Five-O (book 'em Dano),
Hogan's Heroes (I know nothing, I see nothing ...,)
The Man From Uncle (Agents Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin, now known as Dukky on MCIS)
The Avengers (Emma Peel - Yum Yum),
The Fugitive (where is the one-armed man),
Combat (war, war and more war)
The Outer Limits (There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission.),
Star Trek (to boldly go where no man)
1970's
MY Pick M*A*S*H

I also considered

All in the Family Edith!!!!!)
Black Sheep Squadron (WWII Pilots and Nurses)
Fantasy Island (Boss, da plane, da plane)
Happy Days (Who can forget the Fonz! Heyyy!)
Night Gallery (you can't go wrong with Rod Serling
Kojak (Who loves ya, baby?)
Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In (Look that up in your Funk and Wagnalls)
1980's
MY Pick Cheers (barflys and womanizers)

I also considered

China Beach (if I were a woulded soldier I'd want Dana Delaney fixing me up)
The Cosby Show (clean honest fun, never a dull moment)
Newhart (a 9 year dream, the finale was simply awesome)
Night Court (John Larroquette was awesome)
Roseanne (a different view of the All American family)
Hill Street Blues (they actually aired Dennis Franz naked butt in one epioside! And this was the 80s!,
Star Trek Next Generation (an obvious choice),
Tales from the Darkside (Horror not unlike the Outer Limits or the Twilight Zone,
1990's
MY Pick Twin Peaks (Special Agent Cooper "Damn good coffee! )

I also considered

Chicago Hope (Mandy Patinkin was great as Doctor Jeffrey Geiger)
Law & Order:SVU (still going strong)

NYPD Blue (A natural progression from Hill Street Blues),
Picket Fences (small town living with lots of crime and strange happenings)
Seinfeld (A show really about nothing - fave episodes Soup Nazi, Shrinkage, The Contest )

2000's
MY Pick Lost - Simply the Best TV EVER!!!!

NCIS (Spun off from JAG, this one is ten times better, especially with one Goth Forensic Scientist named Abby -Pauley Perrette - and DiNosso with his Sawyer-like nicknames for Probie Agent McGee)
Sons of Anarchy (I jsut started and am thoroughly hooked - ready to go back season 1)
Fringe (my kind of show - don't blink twicve or you'll get lost)
Without a Trace (intense FBI drama))

Wikipedia said Seinfield's original air date was July 5th, 1989....so even though nearly it's whole running was during the '90's, according to the criteria for this thread, it was an
'80's series.

CRinVA as much as I love lost, I don't think it's the best TV ever. That right goes to Six Feet Under and The Sopranos for me.

I think it's odd to have sitcoms and dramas going against each other, personally. As good as shows like Fraiser and Seinfeld are, dramas will beat them everytime for quality. It's hard to compare the two, at least for me.

I'm just saying the is a reason why The Emmies and Golden Globes have best Comedy Series and Best Drama Series. You judge each by different merits. Fraiser, Seinfeld and South Park are amongst my favourite shows but if I had to compared them to dramas as Best, they wouldn't even make the grade. I just have a feeling in this format most sitcoms will get left behind and none get their fair shake.

Also, can we nominate again eventually?

Well when we'll be voting you'll get to choose between several randomly selected series, so if you've seen them, you can vote as to which you like better.
Sounds good.

Cant belive I forgot about The X-Files and Married with Children

And as far as The Three Stooges goes - they were on TV weekly back then! I rememberw as I was always getting scolded by my Grandmother for watchibng them as trash shows. Of course my Grandmother also hated many of the 1960s comedies that I loved.

However, due to the semantics of it all I'll change my vote for the 50s to The Honeymooners - Jackie Gleason at his best!

Rubbing hands together too, feev! I wouldn't if it didn't have "best show of decade" rounds first, of course, since on a board which has only a few Doctor Who fans (avid fans, we may be, but still few) on a board that loves Stephen King, a show that's had a lot of influence from the storytelling of sai King is easily gonna win a lot of votes in a round like that, even I will admit that!

But if Doctor Who actually makes it far enough to win best show of the 60s (or at least best show that started in the 60s), and goes up against Lost in a semi-final or even a final round, well, I'll be happy enough. It will be interesting to see how it pans out, anyway.

I'd love to start watching Doctor Who, it looks really interesting, but as it's such a long-running series (close to 800 episodes) it's sort of daunting.

Just start from the 2005 series, pablo, listed as "Series One" on netflix. It is a lot of fun, and yes, it has history, but the Eccleston series was meant to be watched by the whole family after an absense of nearly 16 years, so naturally, it's also the perfect jumping on point. Give it a try.

Here's my nominations:
1960's The Munsters
1970's Facts of Life
1990's Sex and the City

Here's what I've got left:

50's: The Adventures Of Champion (aired as Champion The Wonder Horse over here)

70's: The Waltons

90's: My So Called Life

00's: Green Wing

I'll be back with 80's...I had Roseanne as my first choice, also Cheers and the Simpsons.
I had The Munsters for 60's, M*A*S*H as my first 70's choice and Buffy and Frasier as 90's. Lost for 00's, but I'm sure that's obvious :D

I also had American Gothic in mind for 90's, but it only got one season. I nearly went with ER, I stopped watching it years ago, but the first few years were excellent.

60's: The Flintstones
80's: Hill Street Blues

pablo - can I have West Wing as a 2000? It premiered on the 1999/2000 season and ran until 2006.

mae
11-02-2010, 06:21 AM
Unfortunately there are a few such cases. Seinfeld premiered in 1989. The Sopranos premiered in 1999. There's no easy and fair way of doing this, so West Wing has to be a 1990s series. There are also other cases where series span several decades (Doctor Who, The Simpsons). How do you classify those? So premiere date seems the most clear-cut and obvious, anything else seems too subjective.

Also, I decided to be the one to sacrifice an 80s nomination to make sure Roseanne got into this contest, but I think the best sitcom before that was probably Family Ties. Well, after giving it some thought, and seeing as how there's still plenty of room for nominations and lots of great shows are yet to be nominated, I believe it's okay for people to nominate more than once in all decades. So have at it.

I've decided to limit the number of nominations to at most 40 per decade. Then we'll have 10 brackets of 4 random shows per decade with the top two advancing, and so on as usual.

Yes! I just found that channel too. :)
And I wish they would release the whole series on dvd too. Apparently, the show had SO much music that it's hard to get the rights to release it all on dvd. My mom got me a bootleg copy of the series for Christmas last year. It's awesome and all, but I've seen the show so much that I can remember episodes that are missing from the dvds. For 2000s, I'd like to nominate Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Not because I think it'll get very far, but because it's so good it deserves to be nominated. Also, Firefly, if possible. I don't know if it counts as a mini-series because it got cancelled so soon, but that deserves a mention, too.

Also Pablo, liked your earlier nomination of Coupling. I knew when I first watched it that Steven Moffat was one of the best comedy scriptwriters in television, but it wasn't until his episodes for Doctor Who that I realised he's one of the best scriptwriters today, full stop. If there's any episode I'd recommend to a newbie, it's any of his episodes written for series 1 to 4, including the Empty Child, and of course Blink. Everyone loves Blink!

Nah, you need to watched Spaced and Green Wing to realise Coupling was a bit inconsistent and verging on crap ;)

Blasphemy! Ok, so I will admit that Spaced was better, so-much-so that it's one of my favourite tv shows ever, but I never thought that much of Green Wing. I love randomness, but that was a little too random for me at times.

Also, non-linear comedy, gotta love that! "The End of the Line" is my favourite example of that!

I can't believe no one nominated for the 1950s Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Leave It to Beaver, and Zorro! I'll do so now.

Okay, I've decided to cap the first four decades at 24 nominations, and the next two decades at 32. Which we've now almost reached after a week of nominating, and I think it's a good amount and a great and fair representation of all sorts of TV series.

mae

A few more noms that have to be nominated:

2000s: The Wire, Dead Like Me
1990s: ER, NYPD Blue
1980s: Amazing Stories, Red Dwarf, Quantum Leap
1970s: Night Gallery, Taxi
1960s: The Outer Limits, Here's Lucy, The Jetsons
1950s: Perry Mason, The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet

Just went back and filled in a couple I'd missed. We're now set with all our nominees for the 2000s and the 1990s. We need one more nominee for the 1980s, two more for the 1970s, three more for the 1960s, and five more for the 1050s.

The framework for the polls will be as follows:

We will have one poll from each decade open twice a week, and each will run for a week.
Each decade will have its nominees randomized several times by random.org (http://www.random.org/lists/).
After each round those nominees advancing will again be randomized several times.
When only one nominee remains in each decade there will be a round-robin playoff to determine the overall winner where each series will face one another with the winner receiving 1 point (the one to receive the most points obviously wins).

mae

Okay so all our nominations are set!

A note on the format:

All decades will go through five rounds. The decades with 32 nominees, the 1990s and the 2000s, will have Round 1 (16 brackets) and Round 2 (8 brackets) of one-on-one votes to whittle the number down to 8. That will be the Quarter-Finals (4 brackets). Then the Semi-Finals, and finally the Final. All one-one-one votes.

The other decades, ones with 24 nominees, will have a slightly different process. Round 1 (12 brackets) will be the same, one-on-one. Round 2 will consist of 4 brackets of three series, with the top two moving on. There will be Quarter-Finals (4 brackets) of one-one-one votes. This proceeds the same with Semi-Finals and Final as the 32-nominations decades.

I hope that makes sense. I've given this a lot of thought and I think I've come up with a good balanced system. It might take a while, sure, but are we really in any hurry? Who doesn't love polls?

The plan is to have two waves of five polls open on Mondays and Wednesdays. What does everyone think of having new polls open three times a week? Would that be too much? It's just that we do have a lot to get through, and that would keep it fresh. On the other hand, it could be somewhat overwhelming.

turtlex

I guess this is a good opportunity then for you to discover some great series. They were all nominated for a reason. And that's why I've added a video of each and linked the titles to Wikipedia, for those that haven't seen them or had forgotten.

turtlex

Pablo / Iwritecode - For sure. I really think, that based on the choices here, we have a veritable history of good television listed. While I don't always agree with every choice - I can see why they were included and how they appeal. We have a great spectrum of shows in the polls. Bravo to our members.

Also, the breakdown of the polls by decade - a great idea. You can really see how television has evolved here in the US.

It is plain to me that the Lost fans can overwhelm the rest of us any time (with the possible exception of the Dr. Who contingent). If we're just out to determine what tdt.org members already know and love, I'm not sure that so much effort is really needed.

If you're saying that Lost winning it all in the end is a foregone conclusion, I'm not so sure. There are plenty of quality series in the 2000s to challenge Lost for it to even make it out of the Decade Final.

Blake's 7 was ace, I also loved Sapphire and Steel. I haven't nominated any (bar one) UK series though, because unless it's something like Monty Python or Dr Who, no one from the US will know what they are and they won't get voted for anyway. If we were doing UK tv series, my list would be completely different.

You know, even when I nominated a couple of my favourite UK shows, I would've agreed with this statement Lisa, I just thought that they deserved to be nominated, at least. Boy, am I glad how we're both wrong: have you seen how well Life on Mars is doing against much loved US comedy Arrested Development?!? Even if it loses, it still shows that there's a lot more love for truly great UK shows on this board than we think! That's one thing I've learned from the tournament so far. It'll be interesting to see what else it'll reveal about opinions on so many great shows.

mae
11-27-2010, 01:25 PM
I've been thinking, as the tournament has gone on, that lots of very good series have not been nominated. I could name at least a dozen without giving it much thought. So I figured it could be fun to add another dimension to our tournament by introducing a "challenger" series. Now this is just an idea so feel free to tell me I'm crazy and we'll forget I even mentioned it. Seeing as how there were 160 series nominated overall for the tournament, I thought we could come up with another 40 to make an even 200. These other series, however, will not be restricted to decades and the show that emerges victorious takes on the winner of the main tournament as a challenger to test its claim as the best television series of all time. This challenger tournament would begin after the main tournament is done with, of course, perhaps a bit afterward maybe, and it would follow the same basic principle we've been using so far.

So, thoughts. Yay or nay?

I think we'll go, as has been suggested, with seconding (at least) for a series to be nominated. People can nominate and second as much as they like, but remember, we only have 40 spots. So, think hard.

Round 1 is done. We're just waiting on a tiebreak in the tight battle of Battlestar Galactica vs. The Big Bang Theory (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?11694-BTVSAT-Round-1-2000s-(Bracket-15)). Once it's settled, Round 2 will commence.

The 2000s and the 1990s will once again be one on one polls, while the rest of the decades this round will be a choice of three, with the top two moving on. So that will make four brackets for the 1950s through the 1980s, and 8 brackets for the other two decades.

Interestingly, we have five animated series in the 1990s (of sixteen total). Something I didn't expect.

mae

I'm gonna go ahead and start Round 2, and the bracket for the 2000s will have to wait until the tie is resolved. Please go to there (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?11694-BTVSAT-Round-1-2000s-(Bracket-15)) and help us break the deadlock.

Please keep nominating series and seconding already nominated series for the challenger tournament.

Also, I just wanted to shine a light on the forthcoming schedule for the main tournament. Round 2 is now underway. The last brackets of Round 2 will go up on December 22. Round 3, the Quarterfinals, will begin on January 3. Round 4, the Seminfinals, will begin on January 19. The Finals will begin on January 31. Once all this is finished, we'll be left with just six series, each representing one of the six decades. Those series will then, starting on February 7, take part in a five-round round-robin tournament (15 matchups) where each series faces every other. The winner receives 1 point. The winner at the end is crowned TDT.org's Best Television Series of All Time.

mae
12-16-2010, 08:10 AM
Another note. For the subsequent rounds after the second I won't randomize the brackets as I have been doing. I'll use a standings system sorted by the greater percentage of vote received by a series. Then the brackets will be determined: 1 vs. 8, 2 vs. 7, 3 vs. 6, 4 vs. 5. And so on in later rounds.

Yeah, the more votes a series receives, the better its standing will be, thus facing lesser opponents going forward.

Couldn't help but notice that list was all US shows, feev. Not that I'm disagreeing with that list (although Walking Dead should've been much higher, imo), but well, with no sign of Misfits, or the amazing final series of Ashes to Ashes, to me it has about as much validity as, say, this list does to a lot of people on this board:

http://totalscifionline.com/features/5769-the-100-greatest-sci-fi-fantasy-tv-shows

Of course, it's worth pointing out that, at the end of the day, this is a UK site, so whilst a number of US shows turn up in the top ten, the one that makes the biggest impact in the UK is of course the one that tops the list. Just saying: thing is with lists, they rarely mean anything. And that includes the one I just posted.

mae
12-16-2010, 11:06 AM
By the way, in case there will be series with the same percentage of received votes, the number of votes will be used as tiebreak.

mae
12-18-2010, 11:01 AM
Actually, a little amendment. To be more fair and to avoid having the same matchups in Round 3 as in Round 2 (which right now looks possible actually), I'll combine the percentages earned by each series in R1 and R2 and that will be their scores going into Round 3 and on.
