Gene Wolfe - The Citadel of the Autarch. Last in a series though he later added two more.

I'm planning on finishing The Citadel, then the last in Vance's Dying Earth series, Herbert's God Emperor of Dune and possibly Clarke's Space Odyssey books before the end of the year.

Just finished The Drop by Dennis Lehane. 4/5.

Just started Dark Screams: Volume One (ebook-only) edited by Brian James Freeman and Richard Chizmar of the Cemetery Dance Publications. It includes Weeds by Stephen King.

Are all the Dune books written by Herbert's son and Anderson as good as the original novels? I'm almost finished with God Emperor. I like the idea of more stories but I also like what Dan Simmons planned for Hyperion...no sequels, prequels or shared universe stories by his family or anyone else.

People either love or hate the Dune books penned by son Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson. Personally, I like them. Besides if you just read the six Frank Herbert books it ends on a cliff hanger. The enw books end the story as well as fill in the gaps of the Butlerian Jihad, the 3-4 decades before Dune, creation of the Sisterhood, the Mentats, ....

By the way, God Emperor is probably the hardest to get through of all the Dune books in my honest opinion!

I have a very jaded disposition toward the Dune series; my ex girlfriend of 3 years let me borrow the first book. I must have read about 300-400 pages before the day we broke up hahaha. After that, I was never able to complete it.

I'd love to give it another shot someday.

So far I'm really enjoying it, but I've had such a small sample of the series. I've heard that Frank Herbert is only responsible for a few books and then it was picked up by his...son? I've heard it takes off in very different directions.

But I found some nice BCE's of the original trilogy, they look and feel like 1st/1sts but without ANY of the value, so I'm pleasantly reading those.

Larry Niven - Ringworld

I had to stop Rhialto the Marvelous by Jack Vance. The whole book felt pointless. It was just more silly adventures of verbose, eccentric, scoundrel magicians. The first book was the best and I hate to say it, I should've just stopped there.

The further you get into the Ender saga, the more intensely political it becomes. I love the series and enjoyed them all but it did get to be a bit much. I found that the Bean books (the "Shadow" series) has better pacing throughout.

I guess they're giving nods to each other now.

Sorry, Dan. I forgot to come back here. I finished Those Who Wish Me Dead a while ago and I really enjoyed it. I thought it had a really nice pace to it and moved really fast once it got started. The twin hitmen were two of the best characters I've read in a book in a long time. They were pretty awesome! I know it's going to be made into a movie, and I can really see it transferring nicely. I thought the book had a nice cinematic feel to it.

Also, I remember you recommended Dan Simmons to me. I was at a used book store the other day and I saw Drood. I passed on it because it didn't interest me that much. I could go back and get it, but I'm wondering if you have any thoughts on it.

Lastly, has anybody read Red Rising? I'm hearing great things about the series and thinking of getting into it at some point.

Glad you enjoyed it. Drood is a hit or miss with people. I loved it, but it's very mixed in reviews. The Hyperion books are amazing; they are sci-fi. Children of the Night is a really good horror. The Terror is part horror and part historical fiction. I wasn't a huge fan but Song of Kali is well received. The only one I have not liked of his was Black Hills. Although I may give it another chance in the future.

Finished Shift by Hugh Howey (2nd book of his Silo trilogy) and started on Nightmares and Dreamscapes by King. I'd listened to the audio tapes (wow) back in the mid-90s, but decided to read the book on my Paperwhite before diving into Dust (3rd book of the Silo trilogy).

I had the same problem with 1Q84. I finished half of it and gave up on it. The story could've been amazing at 300 pages.

Thanks, I feel guilty not finishing a book, but that one is so long and moves at a snails pace. Though I do enjoy his writing, so I'll try one of his shorter novels next time.

Anyways, reading Revival now, (which I'm liking) and listening to Doomed by Chuck P. (which is alright, a lot of repetitiveness, Rant was soooo good compared to this.)

He also lied about that whole punching Jesse Ventura in the face at a bar- thing. Guy has some pretty tall tales. Should change the name of the movie to American Big Fish.

Kyle's post-war accounts as far as I can tell contain so much bullshit that if he had blue eyes, they would turn brown. Not sure why you would conflate that with his war record, however, which is what the movie focuses on. Why would you rename the movie American Big Fish? I've never seen anything that indicates his service record has been fabricated.

Almost finished reading Gone Girl. Great book. Love how it gives both Nick and Amy's perspectives.

Been enjoying A Storm of Swords. I'll read a bit more once I'm done with GG. Was thinking of going back to Wuthering Heights and trying to finish that, but it's a bit slow going when it doesn't focus on the Heathcliff/Catherine relationship. Either Hive Monkey or Drive's next.

I enjoyed Gone Girl the book, but I think it had been hyped up so much by the time I read it that it didn't have as big of an impact on me as far as the "wow" factor. The movie was very good as well. Really, really good adaptation. It only makes me wish that I could've gone into the movie "blind" without having read the book because I think it would've been that much more spectacular.

Okay, I've gotta ask a question.

How much time will you give a book that you're not "feeling" before you give up on it altogether?

I started reading Ian McEwan's Atonement last night and, to be honest, I was almost over it before I even started it. I opened the book only to realize that there wasn't even any damn dialogue for the first 9 pages. 9 pages! I ventured into it anyway just because I wanted to read something, anything. But, I found myself just skimming paragraphs and barely paying attention to what was going on. I wanted to read it, was curious over it, but now I just wanna take the stupid book and put it in a pile of "I'll never read books" and trade it in at the bookstore even though I waited a month for it to be delivered in the mail.

50 pages max, a lot of times less. If you don't like the writing or the dialogue or the characters or whatever else, it's better to pick up something else. It's not even that it's a bad book necessarily but I'd rather be reading something I really like. Books are a big time commitment.

I lasted about 1/3 of a page in The City of the Dead by Brian Keene before I flung the book across the room. I've never been so disappointed with something a writer has done...I'm getting mad just thinking about it. The City is the sequel to The Rising. The Rising ends slightly open-ended but not really. It's pretty obvious what happened and it was bleak and it depressed the hell out of me. After being pressured by fans he wrote the sequel which changed the ending of The Rising completely. I felt cheated and robbed of the emotional impact The Rising had on me. I've read many of his books since then but never with enthusiasm I've had before The City of the Dead.

The maximum defective allowance I've ever given a book is 100 pages, and that's because I really wanted to like the book.

 I think the last time I forced myself to finish a book I didn't like was The Scarlet Letter. That book taught me that, if you think it's going to get better even though forcing yourself to read it is torturous, headache-inducing, and quite frankly, NOT FUN, you are wrong. I told myself after that: "Never again, Amanda. Just stop while you can."

Exactly! I hate wasting time on a bad book when there's a great unopened book waiting to be discovered and enjoyed.

How many pages into The Fault in Our Stars did we get before saying "Nope" ?
But seriously, if I can tell right away that I really don't even care for any of the characters, what's the point, right? I don't like people in real life, why the hell would I want to waste my free time reading about people that I also don't give a shit about?

I do wish there was a box in my mind I could put all those unfinished books in, set them on fire, and somehow erase them from my memory. That way they would stop haunting me for never having been finished.

I'm notorious for starting books and putting them down right away. It depends on the book, some I'll toss aside before I even finish the first chapter. Others I'll force myself to read and finally quit much further in when it doesn't get any better. But for the most part the story really has to grab me from the get go.

The movie takes one of the stories and makes a half-hearted attempt at it. The book has 5 separate but loosely related stories. Two are amazingly awesome; two are very very good; and one is sortof weird but interesting in its novelty. The story Low Men in Yellow Coats (which the movie is mostly based on) is one of the "amazingly awesome" stories.

You should read the book.

Joe R. Lansdale - Black Hat Jack. I've never been a fan of westerns. This is a good story but I wouldn't be reading it if it weren't written by Lansdale. #harshtruth

I enjoyed the book but it wasn't awesome. It was good enough that I do want to read another Nick Cutter book though.

Finished reading The Troop by Nick Cutter and now almost done with Bird Box by Josh Malerman...BTW Bird Box is really good so far.

Was The Troop good? I've read good things about it, even by King himself.

It has to be better than The Deep, I have not been that disappointed in a book in a long time, the last 200 pages were a struggle to get through. Way too many dream sequences, flashbacks and journal entries. It was a chore. I haven't read The Troop yet but I imagine I should have started with that one

I liked it a lot! If you've never read Barker I imagine it is as good a place as any to start. He's expert at creating other worlds and dimensions and a master of the weird and strange. I've pretty much loved everything I've read by him except Mister B. Gone. I still need to read Imajica, The Abarat series, Everville and Galilee

Thanks for your thoughts! I originally heard about Clive Barker after finishing the Dennis L. McKiernan books about Mithgar; I was looking for another world to get lost in. I have never actually read anything by him though, and I don't know why/how that happened. One of my goals for 2015 now is to read Weaveworld :)

I think that might be the problem people have with it. To me you can't really compare the two. While similar in ways (theme and characters and such) they're very different books to me, and have a completely different style. I read The Regulators long before I read Desperation, so maybe that's why I enjoy it so much? If I had read it right after Desperation then I could see being a bit let down if you're expecting something similar.

You're right. Had I gone into it with no expectation that they were related to one another, I may have enjoyed it more. Maybe one day I should give it another go.

To me, The Regulators is really cool material for a short story but not a full length novel. I did read Desperation first and do like it better than The Regulators. I remember the day they both came out, I bought Desperation and my best friend bought The Regulators and we both started reading our purchases at the same time. A few days later we started discussing them and when we began mentioning character names, you can imagine how blown our minds were! It took me a few more years before I got around to reading The Regulators and was indeed disappointed with it but maybe I was hasty and should give it another go.

 Yeah, I can imagine that would be pretty confusing for the both of you.
Heck, I can't lie, as someone who has read both, I was pretty confused going into The Regulators, like "why are all the names the same but the characters and story different?!"

Even though I had seen parts of the movie, I knew the book would deliver so much more - King is so good at delving into the minds of his characters that you get an entire unknown story just by their thoughts! I love how Paul's mind keeps cycling back to the pilings and the tide. King never ceases to maze me at how he can put you right there in the mind of the character.
