I'm rereading The Catcher in the Rye because everyone says how great it is and I'm trying very hard to like it, but... I can't.
Agreed. This book is so overrated.
Currently reading: Doctor Sleep and loving it so far.

As I recall, it's kinda a "time of your life" book and intended for "Tweens" and such. I may be showing my age, but it was a seminal book in my life. FWIW

Maybe that's it - I should have read it when I was a jaded, miserable teenager, like Holden. :P But even at that age, I don't think I was as depressed as he was. Anyway, I'm glad at least a few people agree with me. :) If I have to read the words "crumby," "lousy," or "phony" one more time.... :onfire:
I need to go to the library and get more new books. I reread way more than is good for me.

One word of advice. If you hated Catcher in the Rye because of how miserable the main character was, stay away from The Graduate as well.
It was full of a bunch of characters who were miserable and unhappy with their lives, and I remember thinking none of them even cared about each other.
Waste. of. time, that book was.

Yeah, but you're not hearing every single internal thought people in real life have. And you can get away from them and talk to other people. Even in other books, there are characters I don't like, but the book has other characters, so I get a break from the miserable ones. Besides, in other books, the miserable characters (Brienne from ASOIAF, for example) they at least have interesting stories or moments of happiness that interrupt the depression. Holden's happiest moment is creeping into his parents' home to talk to his sister at stupid o'clock in the morning, which isn't really sympathetic or... sane.
I read to relax, to learn, to enjoy myself. A certain amount of darkness is exciting or necessary, but there's a point at which it goes overboard. I didn't feel relaxed or happy while reading it, and all I really learned was "yep, I still don't like this book."

I loved Casual Vacancy. I can name a number of other books I loved where the characters were miserable. In all of those, though, these miserable people are not presented as protagonists, worthy of admiration, bearers of new values as opposed to the "hypocritical" old ones, or discoverers of new truths as opposed to old "lies". Which is exactly the case of The Catcher. I have elaborated on this in our Book Club. There are some interesting posts there, and I wish the present discussion was taking place there, in The Catcher thread.

I couldn't read The Casual Vacancy. While I was thrilled she was writing an adult novel that had nothing to do with Harry Potter, I was disappointed with the result. It was like she went too far over the other side and just littered it with profanity and hatred.
I'm rereading Eyes of the Dragon. I used to love this book, but this time around I just can't get into it. Hopefully I will get new books from the library soon so I can quit rereading. <_<

Reading Robin Hobb's Tawny Man Trilogy. I can't believe it took me this long to get around to reading her work - my sister has been badgering me about it for years. I finally started in with the Farseer Trilogy during the summer and was amazed. Truly original and well written and in no way relying on Tolkien's work/world...that's rare in fantasy!
do you think bears might like it?
Darkthoughts
10-19-2013, 06:33 AM
Hmm, hard to say! I think you would possibly like the Farseer Trilogy, which is mainly about a young boy who becomes a royal assassin and caught up in royal and political intrigue against his will. It's all set in a make believe medieval type setting. There's LOTS more to it than that, but I think that's the hook by which I may draw you in :D
the real hook is whether or not it is well written
Darkthoughts
10-19-2013, 06:40 AM
Very well written! I was impressed. I want to like so many fantasy series, but find it's a genre where poor writing, storytelling and dialogue seem to be acceptable.
Hobb has a fantastic voice and she made me run the gamut of emotions with her characters.

I really, really liked the scientific and factual aspect of The Andromeda Strain and I felt the same way you did about the ending. There was a build up to this huge explosive climax and then nothing. I finished it and thought, "really?" Still, the writing was superb and the story was great so I'll keep reading his books in chronological order.
I finished The Prestige today. Great book. Also finished the third part in the Toxic City trilogy by Tim Lebbon. YA series that doesn't shy away from getting bloody and there are actual hard choices to make *cough* Hunger Games *cough*
Starting Game of Thrones tomorrow morning. I like the TV show enough to give these a try. My brother gave me the boxset last week for my birthday so I have no excuse. I'll probably start T.E.D. Klein "Ceremonies" or the new one by Ramsey Campbell called "Ghosts Know."
I don't even remember how Andromeda ended. I can, if I try hard, but the focus was so not on the events that it somehow doesn't really matter. Same with all other Crichton I've read, with the only (so far) exception of Disclosure.

It's really eye-opening. Even for people who are well aware of the democide he perpetrated, there are a lot of holes in his life that the CCP history papered over-or blotted out-which are revealed. Just looking at a list of the people they interviewed-former GRU agents in charge of China, the widow of Enver Hoxha, former CIA directors-is astonishing.

I started out very skeptical of the series, especially reading the prologue to the first book. 'Gared' doesn't sound like a name that even a medieval Viking would have-I assumed this would be an unreadable fantasy nerd novel after the first three pages, but I persevered, and I was not disappointed. I didn't stumble upon any truly idiotic, WTF was he thinking moments until the very end of A Storm of Swords, but the A Feast for Crows made up for that in part. I would stick with it if I were you.

That's exactly how I felt. I needed to read minimum 500 pages to be able to tell who is who (quite understandable, tons of characters and I didn't care about them very much) and I needed much more to really get to like the story.
Somehow by the end of the first book I was hooked. I don't even know when or how it happened.

Harrison: that book, TIME OUT OF JOINT, looks very interesting to me. Let me know what you thought of it when you finish!
I'm not liking this Saul book. I like the change from my big three of fiction, because it allows me to pick out bad tendencies that I dislike and avoid them in my own writing, but his shit is so telegraphed it's obnoxious. I especially don't like his overuse of the one sentence paragraph for dramatic effect. I feel like he has taken a powerful tool and made it into something cheap. Wayyyyyyyyy too many adverbs, and he can never just say the word 'said.' He always has to spoon feed every piece of dialogue. But I'm trudging through it-- in a way it's motivating since I know I can write better than him-- and rewarding myself by restarting a long overdue DT re-read :harrier:

Time Out Of Joint was very good, I'd put it in the top five of Philip Dick's works, in there with Palmer Eldritch, DADOES, High Castle, and Martian Time-Slip. A good example of one of the major themes of his work: What is real? If you've never read him, check him out, he'll either speak to you pretty strongly or you'll be totally nonplussed.

I wanted to share this somewhere...
So, I like to read all kinds of books. Stephen King is my favorite, but I'll give almost anything a shot. I like to venture into all kinds of genres, depending on my mood. My guilty pleasure every now and then is a good romance novel. I can be real particular about the book I pick. It's a corny genre, I know, but it still has to be done right. I can put one down so quick from just a character doing/saying the wrong thing.
So, with that said, I tried to read one yesterday, and was done by the third paragraph after the word "titties" was used. Titties! I mean, how does "titties" have a place in a historical romance novel? Did a 15 year old boy write this book?

Is the Mistborn series straight up high fantasy, or is there a bit of steampunk thrown in? Tbh I'm very picky when it comes to fantasy, a lot of just seems so derivative.

there's only one way to have it twice in this sad life, and it's not applicable to my English-speaking friends and TDT, alas. I am talking about first reading a book in your native language (provided the translation is very good and you don't know the original language yet), then in the original (provided you've learned it very well by then). I've experienced this outstanding delight - with tons of books I had known almost by heart since childhood (like Jane Eyre, or Dickens' novels, or Chesterton's stories, etc) - many times since I learned English. It's a crazy feeling: the book is the same - but not the same; you know it by heart - but you read it for the first time... again.

No on Warbreaker. Elantris is the only Sanderson I've ever read.
Is the Mistborn series straight up high fantasy, or is there a bit of steampunk thrown in? Tbh I'm very picky when it comes to fantasy, a lot of just seems so derivative.
The original Mistborn is basically just high fantasy, with magic systems and whatnot. A trilogy. There is now a standalone novel set in the same universe centuries later called The Alloy of Law that is steampunk. I have a copy of the ARC around here somewhere, but I haven't read it yet.

I started Joe Hill's Horns yesterday.
Well?
I've gotten about 65 pages in.
On the plus - Hill is a good writer.
The negative - I'm not even sure I like the main character yet.
Side note - I wish that I didn't know Hill was SK's son going into this. I feel like it's keeping me from having a completely neutral state of mind while reading it. :orely:
Alas! I'll keep going and see what happens. Hopefully, I'll find out that I love it since my husband bought me 3 Hill books for Christmas.
bears loved Horns
they are not sure they liked the main character, either. They even think the relations with him should be described in different categories.
Hope you'll love the book eventually

A few things on the go
A Clash of Kings - GRRM. If they stopped feasting so much, maybe the story would go somewhere. 2/3 finished.
The Golden - Lucius Shepard. Elegant writing, cool story. I love Shepard, this is no exception.
Hangman - Michael Slade. A gruesome whodunit that pulls no punches. My third Slade and all three are five stars.
Voice of the Fire - Alan Moore. 30 pages left. No book has impressed me and messed with my head more. I've never read anything quite like it. Neil Gaiman wrote an introduction in the "new" edition.
The Anubis Gates - Tim Powers. Only three chapters in and I'm starting the book again. It's that good and I want to re-read it a week after I started it.
Robert J. Sawyer - Flash Forward. It's like a Canadian Crichton
Walter M. Miller Jr. - A Canticle for Leibowitz

Finally got around to reading Red Moon. I enjoyed it. I actually thought he could of added more to the story. While he did end it, I thought it could have been longer. I was hoping his next book would be a follow up, but I read an interview of his that states he will go back to it at some point but sees at as a sort of Dark Tower type series where he revisits it every so often.
His next book does sound interesting though. He describes it as a retelling of the Lewis and Clarke trip to the Pacific Ocean.
Now on to London Falling and NOS4A2.
OK Joe315, I'll put what I think of "Red Moon" here since I don't really know if there is a review thread. I can never find anything by the search page.
Percy has, to me, a wierd writing style. It's kinda clinical and abrupt. The antithesis of Hemmingway. He is also about as subtle with his allegories or metaphors as being knocked up the side of the head with a sledgehammer. And I never felt like I got to really know the characters enough to give a farkle if something might happen to them.
That being said - the premise was good and the book was interesting enough that I actually wanted to see where he went with it. The ending was ok. And I give him points for having an ending. Seems a lot just kinda wrap up these days or leave you hanging for umpteen sequels.
Hope that helps, am trying not to give away anything. I think it is an entertaining read - and probably would make a good movie.
And just to be on topic, next up Darwin's Ghosts.

Ok. So, now I'm officially hooked on this book.
There's actual depth to the main character now, a bit more back story to make me sympathize with him, the plot is getting deeper and deeper, and I can't wait to see how it turns out.
it is a very... unorthodox book

I just wasn't so sure in the beginning. It was pretty uncomfortable to read- with everyone divulging their deepest darkest secrets to him, one after the other. I just felt like I couldn't handle one more uncomfortable confession from someone.
But, now that it has gotten past that being the main focus, I am really really enjoying it. And really rooting for Ig.

I finished Horns last night. That book kicked my butt.
I went from being unsure of whether or nor not I wanted to read it, to being obsessed with it. Not to mention, way more emotionally invested than I ever expected. Joe Hill really pulled the rug out from under me on that one.
Now, I've got to figure out what to read next. :orely:

I have been holding off reading Hill's books... to be honest... I thought it was one of those situations where since he is King's son he just got his start that way and may not be that good. Horns is that good? Really? SHould I shut the hec up and pick up a copy?

You'll be pleasantly surprized. He's written two novels that are nothing much (N0S4R2 and Heart-Shaped Box), but Horns is totally unique. As far as his short stories are concerned, I think (sacrilege!...) that they are better than his father's. Well, at least to my taste.

Believe it or not, I read Black Sunday as a teenager! (worked in a library as my first job). I was pretty surprised, because I had not known that the Hannibal Lecter guy had written that until recently.
Now the movie, on the other hand, I gotta see!

I felt the same way. I thought "Yeah yeah, no one would give a crap if he wasn't King's son." That's why I was so reluctant to even read his works, since I knew I wouldn't be able to judge it fairly. But, he really is a good writer. I definitely recommend giving it a shot. :)

You know, I tried to read 20th Century Ghosts sometime last year and just couldn't manage to get into it. Of course, I don't think I'm huge on short stories unless it's Stephen King. :orely:
