The allegory got a little heavy at times (I hate book 7, honestly) but overall I think they're among the best children's books ever written. Don't get me started on what I think of the recent movies. :lol: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe was decent, but the other two... ><

i believe that Mike Hanlon' is in one my favorite King books 'Insommia' but it's been years since i last read it so i can't remember how big or small of a part he had to be honest. i'd love to see him revisit the characters, but that doesn't mean i want him to do a sequel to "IT" there is no need for that.

I'm currently reading a book that contains the 3 classics "Frankenstein", "Dracula" and "Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde". I just happened to notice on my book shelves but I'm not exactly sure when/where I got it. I think my parents got it for me just because it has a foreword by Stephen King in it.

I'm halfway through Frankenstein and having only a basic knowledge of the story from movies and pop culture, it's not at all what I expected.

The language and dialect used in the book makes it a bit of a tough read.

IIRC, there is a brief mention in Dreamcatcher. One of the characters notices some graffiti that says "Pennywise lives!" Other than that, I don't think any of the characters have ever been mentioned in any other books.

The town of Derry has made a number of appearances in other books.

They would not have gotten back together without It. If there is no need for an It sequel, I don't see what else you'd want to read about the characters. Some of the features of their personalities are similar to those of some other people created by Stephen King. I do love that book.

but if memory serves me right we find out about "Thad Beaumount' if i'm not mistaken and you can correct me if i'm wrong. but i forget which King novel that took place after 'The dark half' we learn him and his wife divorced and he at some point kills himself i believe. it may even have been in "Needful things' i forget. but it's those kind of things i love to learn. i don't expect the whole gang to get back together. like you said pennywise was the reason they all got back together.

The fate of Thad Beaumont was revealed in Bag of Bones.

The Shop is mentioned or at least alluded to in The Tommyknockers, The Mist, and The Stand. IIRC, it's The Shop that was responsible for creating the superflu in The Stand.

It was really tasteful but to say anything more would take away from the experience. Just read the book. It's a big one but it flows really well. You get to the last page and you don't want it to end.

My thoughts exactly. I have tried to read Heart-Shaped twice, and I've never finished it. I really dug Horns. I got so into NOS4A2 that I read it in two days! I liked it quite a bit more than some of King's later work (UTD comes to mind).

It's not a novelization, the paperback contains the original script and has some glossy pages bound in the middle with photos--a "32-page photo portfolio"!
I couldn't resist buying it for the cover art alone. Still haven't seen the movie, either.

OK Joe315, I'll put what I think of "Red Moon" here since I don't really know if there is a review thread. I can never find anything by the search page.

Percy has, to me, a wierd writing style. It's kinda clinical and abrupt. The antithesis of Hemmingway. He is also about as subtle with his allegories or metaphors as being knocked up the side of the head with a sledgehammer. And I never felt like I got to really know the characters enough to give a farkle if something might happen to them.
That being said - the premise was good and the book was interesting enough that I actually wanted to see where he went with it. The ending was ok. And I give him points for having an ending. Seems a lot just kinda wrap up these days or leave you hanging for umpteen sequels.

Hope that helps, am trying not to give away anything. I think it is an entertaining read - and probably would make a good movie.

And just to be on topic, next up Darwin's Ghosts.

Does that mean I think they are equally great, no. It means I loved both books and don't think anything could/should be changed to make it better. I give lower scores if there were parts that couldn't hold my interest or I just didn't care for. Other times they are poorly written to get lower ratings. I don't know if that makes sense other than to say that a 5 doesn't mean I think it's the greatest book in the world, just that I enjoyed it for what it is.

All this makes more sense in my head, believe me.

I have 50 pages left in Dark Tower 7. I started the Gunslinger on Jan. 1st and now I'm almost done with Book 7. Next is wind Through the Keyhole, just found it in paperback at a thrift store. Oh and I squeezed Little Sisters of Eluria in there and finished that too.... quick read on that one...... Prior to starting the Dark Tower, I finished up last year by reading The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Series. The first 150 pages were brutally slow but once I got into it, I was walking into a book store finishing Book 1 to buy book 2 and the same with Book 3. Stieg Larrson did a great job with those.

I've had this on my shelf since 08; I wish I had gotten around to it sooner. The storyline has me rethinking my opinion on the traditional fantasy fixtures--elves and dwarves--and considering the fact that I can throw out madeup races with unique names and still have a readable story. The tone is fairly gritty; a dwarven-built war dragon crashes in a fey village. Our protagonist, Will, is one of the few who can touch the dragon. Will's halfhuman, and that human blood allows him to touch iron without being burned. So Will becomes a sort of Chosen for the war dragon.

I like Swanwick's style because he has yet to bog himself down with extraneous details about the novel's setting.

Finished Dark Tower 7 a couple days back,,,,,, not super clear on that ending or sure that I liked it but have been in a bit of a fog from broken back incident and layed up in the hospital bed, I'll probably have to reread the last half of that again but i'm giving it a rest......
2 days ago I started 11/22/63 and am on page 250+, Can't put it down.
On the plus side, By the time I'm done with it, I should have a huge box showing up from Shannon's sale that will keep me busy for a while

and i read a little tonight. but mostly i was kinda waiting for my dumbfuck of a brother to give us a call and drop the kids off. my niece and nephew. they were going to spend the night 2 night. but he never called or anything. so my mind tonight was on seeing them. it's been awhile since i last saw either of them.

Maybe not the best place to put this but...

I have a friend who doesnt read very much but will be in a position to do a LOT of reading so wanted to get recommendations on good reads. Unfortunately she wont touch horror with a ten foot pole and since thats pretty much all I read I dont have any recommendations for her but thot you guys might?

She has read and likes Marley and Me, Little House on the Prarie series, Uncle Toms Cabin (tho she said that was very "heavy"). She likes books written after a movie and is looking for very light, humorous, no one dies and everyone lives happily ever after....

Any ideas?

I'm on page 84, and loving it.

I think it's so serendipitous that I have recently got in to Donald Westlake's (who's alter ego is Richard Stark) work, and this book is dedicated to the man. I also think King kind of adapted his style to be more Westlake-like because of this. The prose is so pretty. Finally (concerning this vein), I believe that Mr. Easterbrook is a nod to Westlake, too (remove the -er and you East and brook).

The story, so far, is so well told and stitched together so tightly, I believe it could crack my top 5 of King books.

I read it last year and I'm listening to it now. I loved it the first time and love it even more the second. But everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Even if they are wrong :)

NOS4A2 has left me feeling hot and cold. There are parts that I really liked and parts that could've been left out. A book that size needed a bigger cast or it needed to be edited into a smaller book. Mr. Hill felt that the book was the exact length it should be and that's that. I can only see it from my perspective.

I really, really liked the first few chapters. I don't even mean the content (that was good too) but the prose. It was so well written that it was like a bulldozer plowing through loose writing of HS-B and even Horns. It had style. It was confident. I felt like I was reading a different author. Then the book lasted 200 pages too long and the urgency was a little lost. It almost slowed down for me as the actual action picked up. Does that make sense?

So here's my JH pecking order: HS-B (even though the writing is not great, the book is dear to me), NOS4A2, 20th Century Ghosts, Horns (better writing than HSB but the plot got a little convoluted near the end), Locke and Key.

Makes perfect sense to me, minus the "almost" part. It's exactly what I've felt about many a book (Talisman and Insomnia, to name just two). Also, totally agree about the first chapters - only I loved the way Horns was written, too.

I'll second Jean on that. I finished 20th Century Ghosts last week. Thoroughly enjoyable, with some very memorable stories, especially "Pop Art" and "Voluntary Committal".

I really want to read Gunpowder,but the limited edition is a bit too expensive for me considering the length of the story. I'm assuming it's not been reprinted.

Boy's Life has always been my favorite. I also really like They Thirst and his most recent Matthew Corbett series.

YES! Great story. I don't get why it's called Gaiman's first adult book in a while though. I didn't feel any more "adult" (whatever that means) than The Graveyard Book (my 3rd favourite Gaiman.)

I'm plowing through a pile of Leisure horror paperbacks. Cheap reads but if you miss that well-written, relatively simple horror, this should be your go-to publisher. I have the following: Brian Keene, J.F. Gonzalez, Douglas Clegg, Tom Piccirilli, Nate Kenyon, Gord Rollo.

Lucius Shepard - The Ends of the Earth
Dan Simmons - The Crook Factory. This could have been one of my favourite Simmons novels. His research is unparalled. Problem is he likes to show it all off and it bogs the story down a bit.

"Southern Cross the Dog" by Bill Cheng. Interesting style. I haven't quite decided if I like it. Cheng is an Asian-American from New York who apparently had never set foot in Mississippi before writing this book which is described as "southern gothic."

We'll see, Bears. Only a few pages in, but so far not so good; I don't like the Fred/George/Random Name thing. But the two Bachman's I've read, I loved. So there's still hope. Of course, those two were written before Carrie and a lot of why they hit me so hard was the relevant themes to young adults. I'll let ya know when I finish.

As long as your not judging. We all have different taste palates, and to each his or her own, right?

Plus tastes change every seven years or so I'm told.

Hopefully when you've read more than a few pages you'll see there's nothing random about the "Fred/George" thing. It's a heartbreakingly touching book; one of my all-time favorites. Most don't seem to like or appreciate it, alas.
