No way Feev!!! Heart Shaped Box is soooo cool, just a brilliant, brilliant ghost story - he's more in Gaiman's style of writing than his Dad's I think. Do you read Locke and Key?

No, I don't. I heard I'm missing out though !

Yeah, I've been curious as to what his writing style is like ... but the Gaiman comparison lends it some context I think. I'll definitely have to check out some of his work soon, the curiosity is gnawing at me.

Feev, he's only got three full-scale books out, so I'd say to just read them in order. 20TH CENTURY GHOSTS is a collection of short stories published in various places before anyone knew of his famous father connection, then there's his first novel, HEART-SHAPED BOX, then his second, HORNS. (Reportedly his third novel is written, but it is not yet published.)

When you want to go the comics route, LOCKE & KEY is great.

Locke & Key is great. I loved 20th Century Ghosts and Heart-Shaped Box, but I tried reading Horns recently and was having trouble getting into it. I need to try again at some point.

Right now I have decided to try to finish The Wheel of Time series. I started ages ago and stopped at book seven for some forgotten reason(probably that other books grabbed my attention more, since book 7 bogs down a bit). I am on book 8, The Path of Daggers now.

Joe Hill, in descending order: Heart-shaped Box, 20th Century Ghosts, Locke & Key, Horns. He should do another collection of short stories. I think I know of 3 uncollected ones and 20th.. was simply great.

Yeah, I think I will. I'm pretty curious to see how her outfits are interpreted on screen... I know that sounds like a totally idiotic thing to say. But it might be a good movie. The book honestly was really good except it was so similar to Battle Royale it almost felt plagiarized.

It's slow going at first, but what really makes the book memorable is definitely Lisbeth Salander. Very Sherlockian, and that's not something I can say about a lot of characters. See, it's easy to come up with a genius who also has faults, but Salander's...well, she's a unique character altogether. It's a while before she appears, but it's worth it.

Heather, (if you haven't) definitely read The Talisman first. It's not reall necessary but you'll have a greater appreciation for Black House and the overall character arcs. Plus, Black House will spoil some things that happened in The Talisman if you haven't read it.

Merlin1958

BH is a much darker book, but can definitely be read before or after Talisman. All you really need to know is that Talisman is out there and the general premise. BH is one of my top 5 King books for some reason. You get a little of almost everything in it.

Does anyone like Diana Gabaldon? Got a signed copy of A Scottish Prisoner for Christmas so I threw out my other reading list and read this one.

Now I'm on to A Feast for Crows. I decided to try the audio book but I'm having a hard time concentrating on it. Might have to pull down the hard copy.

I just finished Overqualified by Joey Comeau. This book was unbelievable. It's essentially a collection of cover letters that you'd include with a resume, sent by a guy with an amazing sense of humor but who is truly suffering emotionally. It was hilarious, sad, ridiculous and painfully sincere. Probably not for everyone but I'd definitely recommend it.

DoctorDodge

No doubt! I just haven't gotten around to it yet. I think we have it around here somewhere. I actually haven't read alot of Gaiman's stuff. I've only read a couple of the sandman comics, some short stories, Neverwhere, and Good Omens I believe.

Holy shit dude, you should really read American Gods. Seriously one of the best books I've read.

Working my way through The Count of Monte Cristo. It's a little hard because he keeps going on tangents (I don't need ten pages to tell me the characters can't get a carriage for the weekend!) but it's worth it. It's also nothing like the movie! Not sure I'll be able to watch the movie anymore knowing it's so different.

I also started reading Twilight because my best friend told me I couldn't make fun of it if I hadn't read it, and dear God is that the worst book I have ever read. I seriously had to stop because Bella's drooling descriptions of Edward's physique were literally making me nauseous. The first third or so of the book had me laughing out loud at the ridiculousness though, so that part was at least entertaining. :P

I struggled with Count of Monte Cristo as well. It does get better, but it is still copiously descriptive. I think it is because Dumas was payed by the page to write the book in installments. So, of course he drug it out as long as possible.

Yeah, I'm torn on John Steinbeck. I really enjoyed Of Mice and Men, but Grapes of Wrath just annoyed me by the time I finished it.
So, I've never been real sure if I should read more of his works.

I've said before that I'm trying to expose myself to more classic lit because I never was required to read much of it in school like most people. I feel like I have to wade through a lot of crap to find a true gem. Most recently, Ray Bradbury's Farenheit 451. I started it on Friday and finished on Saturday. This book blew me away. It was utterly beautiful. And it's so eerie how it was written so long ago, yet reflects our society today. I feel so lucky that I had a strong desire to read this book when I did. I have to put it on my list of top 10 books I ever read. Loved it!

FWIW, back in HS I read predominantly off the NYT best sellers list. Then I had a teacher who told me, quite sensibly in retrospect, that they were considered "classics" for a good reason. I proceeded to tear through them like a mouse eating cheese and for the most part was extremely pleased. The Literary folks do get it right once in awhile and when they agree, go for it. You'll be amazed and enlightened!!! Reading is fundamental!!!

Edit: For instance, The original "Dracula" by Bram Stoker is a truly creepy book. Also written in a novel style as a sort of "diary". You'll be creeped out for sure!! I was!!!

I felt the same as you did.

I liked it, and it was worth reading, but the the way the main character's emotions were portrayed throughout the story felt a bit over the top. I think that could have been handled better in the hands in the hands of a more skilled writer. I felt the ending of the trilogy was appropriate, which kind of surprised me by that point.

On a side note, I'm not far into it, but I am enjoying THE NIGHT CIRCUS.

Me and my friend are reading the same books at the same time. We're thinking of doing Four Past Midnight next. How is The Library Policeman and The Sun Dog? I've only read the first two. I've proposed we read the stories backwards becaue I KNOW The Langoliers is awesome.

Definitely. I know everyone, including myself, compared the first one to Battle Royale, but I like the Hunger Games' ending much better, mostly because Battle Royale doesn't have an ending. It's like the author got lazy and was like "they're running... the end." I also liked how at the end they were all PTSD because that makes a hell of a lot more sense than the bullshit "and they lived happily ever after and never thought of it again" ending most YA books get.. But there was way too much "I love Peeta! I love Gale! OMG which one do I love more???? bullshit going on. I think it ended well but for a while I was just thinking "shut. the fuck. up." I'm really looking forward to the movie in that the story will be there but the shitty writing will hopefully not be.

Also, don't know about anyone else, but I was super pissed when Finnick died. Although Prim's death sucked too, but Finnick was more interesting and actually funny instead of just a person to make Katniss more human.

I could go on about these books for ages.

This. ^^^

I'm about halfway through Summer Knight and that is definitely my big problem with Jim Butcher. I can understand reiterating a few key points in the first couple of books, so that people hopping in partway will understand, but seriously, every book? If I'm up to the fourth book, it's safe to assume I understand how Dresden's world works.

In spite of this, I will admit that there are a few bits here and there that are keeping me reading. Mostly, the inhabitants of the NeverNever. I'm digging the way he's done Fae society...the politics, rules, and personalities of everything there.

I suppose I'll keep at it, since I am liking certain aspects, and, if for nothing else, not having anything else to read at the moment.

That's because they are written to be able to be picked up at any point and read, I think. I mean, of course there is an overall story, but any of them(especially the earlier ones) could also be read as a standalone book. I suppose it becomes less likely in the last few books, though. I can't really remember if he keeps it up all the way through, though, because it never bothered me enough to notice to begin with.

Also, don't know about anyone else, but I was super pissed when Finnick died. Although Prim's death sucked too, but Finnick was more interesting and actually funny instead of just a person to make Katniss more human.

I could go on about these books for ages.
I haven't read BATTLE ROYALE, but I agree with everything you said here about THE HUNGER GAMES.

First of all, SigTauGimp....awesome av/sig combo. :D

Why thank you, ma'am. :D Always glad to see another fan of Reshi. :D

Just about to start on book six of the Dresden series. This last one definitely helped the cause. I loved the religious angles in it, with the Knights, and the Fallen.

Is that Dead Beat? If so, that's my all-time favorite book from the series! And if it isn't....(and I really can't be bothered to look it up atm, sorry. I'm currently brain-dead from organic chemistry homework) rest assured that if you don't love book 6, Dead Beat is simply fantastic!

Dead Beat is seven. Six is Blood Rites(first appearance of Mouse!).

I started reading "Ready Player One" but I was turned off by a two-page atheistic rant early on. To each his own, but it just struck me as being completely out of place. I'm sure I'll give it another try at some point, but I hope the pace picks up soon.

I recently read "The Big Short" and enjoyed it a bunch.

I am currently reading an ARC of "Killing Ghost" by Christopher Ransom, due out soon from Cemetary Dance. Very well done so far; reminds me of "John Dies at the End".

It's pretty entertaining, especially if you're a big fan of video games and pop culture. The only thing that irks me is that it suffers from Harry Potter syndrome, where the novel has no internal logic and the author takes free reign with spamming convenient plot devices to hinder or help the heroes quest as suits his whim. Still, it's only his first novel and the seeds for him to blossom into a fantastic writer are definitely there. A very fast paced read and I'm usually reading large chunks of it at a time. I say check it out.

It's getting a little better... I'm having problems with the names. Question: When a book is translated into another language, why don't they change the names? I like the idea of keeping them but it is just so confusing and I'm not sure on pronunciation, which bothers me. I just figure if you are going to change every other word in the book you might as well come up with a similar name that would be easier to keep track of. And what kind of jerk author puts both a Thomas and Tommy in as major characters?! :arg:

EDIT: you know what the real joke is? My dad's name is Tom and my brother's Tommy, so it does happen. Especially with Thomases!

My stepdad is Tommy and my ex-husband was a Tommy (I saw was because he is now known as Thomas and it just gripes my ass but that's just me) so my little sisters started the habit of calling the ex by his first and last name. Twenty five years later, my extended family still calls him that.

Umm, I'm starting whatever the second Dresden book is, to get this back on track.
