I loved utd... And i feel no obligation to finish a book i'm not enjoying. If within 50 or so pages a book doesn't hold my attention i put it down and move on.

Same here. Although I rarely even give it 50! A quick glance at my bookshelf and I probably have almost 20 books that are partially read  If a book doesn't grab me immediately I usually move on. My only exception is a few King stories like Lisey's Story or Insomnia. I had to finish just because, even though I really didn't want to

And I really enjoyed Under the Dome. And considering it's length I didn't think it dragged at all.

For example, right now I really want to read a great love story that isn't corny or depressing and is realistic but maybe has like time travel or aliens or magic in it and also takes place in a place that isn't Earth. Am I going to find this book? Probz not.

.

Granted I haven't read the books myself yet, but I have a friend who is obsessed with the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon and from how she's described it to me, that sounds a lot like the series. Minus the not Earth thing.

From wikipedia:

The novel is not easily classified by a single genre. On one level, the work is a romance novel with a focus on the romantic relationship between the two main characters. The book could be described as a work of historical fiction with a detailed account of 18th century Scottish clan life. The novel could also be considered science fiction with a plot propelled by time travel as Claire journeys from 1945 to the 18th century.

I read the Outlander series recently. An easy way to describe it while yet not doing it justice is calling it The Matrix, but better.

When you have your most interesting character sitting in a cell for 500 pages and make it so that the most noteworthy thing he does is drink out of a toilet bowl, you know you got a problem. Can you elaborate? what is a character expected to do? what exactly is wrong with sitting in a cell for 500 pages? what kind of problem do you mean?

WeDealInLead

King used to be able to write a classic and have it end in 500 or less pages. He'd breathe life into his characters, put them through hell and break your heart and it wouldn't take you a lifetime to finish that book.

I don't need any further physical proof than my bookcase. The first shelf is early works, up to Misery. The next one starts with Tommyknockers. That shelf has less books because they're thicker and is made up of King's less desirable works. We can all find redeeming qualities in all of them but for the most part, they're bloated and not as consistently mind-blowingly amazing.

Jean, are you really going to tell me King hasn't been overwritting lately? Seriously, I'd rather re-read The Shining than take a chance on Dreamcatcher.

Oh yeah, I'm reading Phases of Gravity by Simmons and The Flood by Ian Rankin. I don't usually read two books at the same time but Simmons is a limited edition and I'm not taking it to work. I'm liking it so far but I'm 60 pages in and don't really know which way the book will go.

Jean

Jean, are you really going to tell me King hasn't been overwritting lately? I totally agree. The only book I have liked in last (don't really know how many) years is UTD, and the only one I loved was Duma Key. No, my question was different: I just don't understand the kind of complaint feverish has voiced. I do not see how the main character's doing or not doing this or that, being active or passive, winning or losing, talkative or silent, says anything about the quality of a book.

There's nothing wrong with it as a contingency in the story, but when you stick your central character in that situation, the one who - up until that point - was fleshed out the most and had the most layers to his persona, and leave the rest of the (painfully uninteresting) supporting cast to carry the narrative forward, then the story becomes dull. That's my problem with it.

Hmm, I think I need to put UTD and Duma Key on my 'to-read' list for next year. And also improve my reading speed - still haven't finished American Gods yet. (Just 60 pages away from finishing, as well!)

I don't think that's a valid statement, in that Barbie is an important character in Under the Dome, but there are lots of other very interesting characters in there too. I see it more an ensemble cast than many of King's other books, such as The Shining, Misery, etc, which do feature one or two main characters. Think The Stand, another ensemble cast that works very well.

John

I am waiting for November 8th to get here so I can get my hands on a most anticipated book that I have been waiting for and now it is coming to an end that week. The last book in the Christopher Paolini series. Inheritance comes out that day. Will Eragon take down Galbatorix in this story...am waiting on pins and needles for this one.

on another note will also get the third book in the Abarat series also this month as I just found out it came out in September and didn't even know it.

Yeah, I made the grave mistake of getting swept up in the hype and thinking that the first novel would be this modern masterpiece. It was okay, but it was bogged down with too many unnecessary subplots. Still, like you said, they're fairly quick, fun reads and I'm curious to see how the rest play out.

A re-read of Bag of Bones. I read it when it first came out and though I don't recall all the particulars of the plot I do remember thinking it was a very good book and how much I enjoyed it.

I've read the first 75 pages or so and continue to be amazed at just how well King can write. So far it's basically one guy alone with his thoughts and King captures it perfectly. There are some passages of pure mastery of the language and turns of phrase. After only 75 pages I feel like I know Mike Noonan intimately via King's characterization. I'm looking forward to continuing with this re-read.

Austrian School was mainstream before Keynes, but now it's just used for political cover. Of course excessive state control is disastrous, yet if not for continual efforts by myth-makers such as Milton Friedman to prop up classical liberalism, opposition to moderate policy responses would be a thing of the past. Simple data on current inequality in America is testament enough to the fallacy of trickle down voodoo. Anyway, bravo to your study.

I'm reading several books at the moment -

- The Wind Up Bird Chronicle by Murakami. As much as I love his writing this book is really dragging out; I don't have a lot left to read but I just can't get into it again.
- Selected Poems 1957-1981 by Ted Hughes. My favourites are 'Bride and Groom Lie Hidden for Three Days' and 'Full Moon and Little Freida'.
- Cathedral by Raymond Carver. I love the way his writing is so pared to the bone, the way it would seem to the untrained eye that nothing has happened yet massive changes have occurred.
- Writing Poetry: Creative and Critical Approaches by Chad Davidson and Gregory Fraser. A very useful book for anyone interested in writing poetry, there are some great exercises in here to get your creative juices flowing.

I am a Dark Tower fan, and I have only read a handful of other Stephen King book. So I bought a 4-in-1 omnibus with The Shining, Salem's Lot, Night Shift, and Carrie. I read Carrie, and enjoyed it quite a bit. The characterization was very good; I was surprised at how deep Carrie herself was. It was also funny to see some Stephen King trademarks
(paranthetical remarks)
in his very first book.

Next, I am reading The Shining, which I know almost next to nothing about. So far, so good. The other night I caught the beginning (ten minutes or so) of Kubrick's movie on AMC and I already prefer the book.

I've found few writers who write characters even close to as well as king.

Oh, and even though i have no desire to read it i too am curious regarding the differences in the exorcist.

Currently re-reading (actually listening) Children of Dune. I plan to go through the entire Dune series - many books by Herbert and then by his son Bryana nd Kevin Anderson. In the interim I just got notice that teh Audio version of IT is ready for me at teh library - 35 CDs - that's a lot of cummute time but a book desperately needing a re-read!

Of course I am reading 11/22/63 as well and also have started The Passage, but that may have to wait even though I am 100 pages into it! :-(

So many books, so little time!

I'm sure this book's been discussed previously but after numerous recommendations I just read "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins. King's review in EW was spot on. It's by no means some lousy young adult book, but a fast-paced, fight to the death survival novel.

My only complaint with the Hunger Games (1st novel) is that it's too reminiscent of Battle Royale. Apparently the second and third books find their own identity though.

I haven't read them yet but with the impending release of the film I might be tempted to do so.

Currently reading "The Night Eternal", third and final in the Guillermo Del Toro & Chuck Hogan series.

JUST finished this last week. Thankfully, the beginning of the novel recapped books 1 & 2 well, as the wait between works made me quite forgetful. I was literally sweating, tearing through the concluding pages of this one. What a thrill ride.

Could not have said it better myself!!!

I've never read Battle Royale. Currently reading book 2 of The Hunger Games Trilogy and it certainly is a completely original story. Anxious to read book three and then move on to 11/22/63.

After seeing The Shining so many times over the years before ever reading the book, I was blown away at just how different the book was. I didn't expect it to be so powerful after already experiencing the movie. One of King's best in my opinion.

I really need to get 11/22/63. I wanted to read it when I first heard about it, but after reading everyone's comments on it...now I really want it. I'm seriously craving a strong addiction to a book right now. It's been a while since I've had that "can't put it down" feeling. :orely:

I think you will. The first book, he is essentially the villain of the piece, but as time goes on, he does indeed grow as a character. Which, now that I think about it, is just another reason for me to get round to reading all the other books in the series. Ugh! Too many books to read and not enough time!

I think another thing to take into consideration of why I loved the first book so much the first time I read it is because I was 12 years old at the time, and there was something really refreshing about the idea of a 12 year old criminal mastermind, instead of the usual typical "12 year old with a destiny" or blatant copies of Harry Potter that seemed to be aimed at younger readers a lot of the time.

Yes. I thought about that same question quite a bit whilst reading it. Truth be told I last read it over thirty years ago. I was trying to ID the new material and found that very difficult. I think I pegged the additional character and Id'ed maybe one added "dream sequence", but that was it. Still a great and scary book though!!!!

I finished it last week. Also in preparation for the mini-series. I hope the TV show is at least half as good as the book.

I'm from NY so, I've met and done business with many "Kinderman"-type characters. He really nailed the culture aspects. He was like a "Jewish" Columbo. There I go dating myself!!! I thought that it was so cool the way Kinderman (a faithful Hebrew) interacted with a Catholic Priest, the catholic Faith and the decidedly Christian themes of both books. It was a masterful piece of writing IMHO

'A wonderful book : page-turningly exciting, witty, wise, melancholic. But also utterly human, profoundly decent' Ashley Pharoah, co-writer and co-creator of Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes

'Take King's hand and allow him to lead you into a past so vibrant and complete that you can almost taste it. But hold on tight, the Master of Horror has now become the Master of Time...Utterly enthralling, emotional and magical' Matthew Graham, co-writer and co-creator of Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes

Jean
11-30-2011, 11:27 AM
yes, they do - but the price approximates what I make in a week. I will have to wait till I go to England again (in a year at least), or till Alexander brings it to me - which he won't this Xmas, because with his thousand family members here, he can't bring hardcovers, or else they will stay without presents/medicines etc; so it will have to be next Xmas

I've just learned that a former student of mine is coming on Xmas from Netherlands, though, and she usually does bring me heavy books (like Duma Key, or the last volumes of Harry Potter). I will ask her, but I got to do it very quick, before she buys something else. If she hasn't already done, that is.

Jean, can't you have it shipped to you?

Yeah, I have stuff shipped to me from all parts of the world without a hitch, especially if purchased from a big retailer like Amazon. I've used the British, French, German, and Japanese Amazons, all with great success. Go ahead and order it on the American Amazon, Jean.

Brice

I believe it's more of having a reliable address/postal system to have stuff shipped to.

Jean
12-02-2011, 02:15 AM
I checked Amazon a few times, hoping that they would review their policy regarding our country, but no, we're still in the list of the countries with special rates, that is, the price of delivery would be about 10 times as hard as I can afford. Thank you guys, it looks like the girl (my former student) is bringing me the book - if nothing happens, that is.

And yes, Brice is right as usual. It is not safe to just send things here from abroad.

I'm currently about 2/3rds through A Feast for Crows. I like it, but I don't love it like I loved every other book in the series. Putting all the characters I give a shit about in A Dance With Dragons really did hurt Feast for Crows.

I'm not allowed to buy anything for myself from November till Christmas, because either my extra money is tied up with Christmas, or my family might want to buy it for me as a present, and the new Stephen King novel is no exception. Same thing happened with Under the Dome and Full Dark, No Stars. So I won't be reading 11.22.63 until after Christmas, but I guess it's nice to know I won't have to pay for it? Until then, I'll have to keep myself occupied with comic books, because no way in hell am I not picking up my weekly stack from here to Christmas.

Heather, It has that signature Palahniuk feel to it, but I'm interested in hearing what you think of DAMNED. I enjoyed it, but there are others of his work I like better. Anyway, let's chat when you've finished.

Jean, I feel for you, man. I'm glad your friend in the Netherlands is bringing you the book. On a side note: Shipping costs aside, what are the odds of packages actually reaching you from the U.S.?

For those reading, or thinking about reading, Cronin's THE PASSAGE, I loved that story and I'm looking forward to THE TWELVE.

Alkanto, how do you like FRAGILE THINGS? Are you reading the whole book, or just the short story with Shadow?

yes, this is the key question. Without dramatazing the situation, at a sober estimate, I think the probability is no worse than 1/2. http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/mishemplushem/Facilitation/0134-bear.gifhttp://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/mishemplushem/Facilitation/0134-bear.gifhttp://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/mishemplushem/Facilitation/0134-bear.gif

I'm enjoying it so far....I've only read the first story yet, but I will read all of them eventually. The main reason I am starting out slowly is because I'm reading two books simultaneously, and the only way I can do that is if I do it with a shorter novel and a short story.

I really enjoyed Good Omens! I feel like the ending was a bit weak, but overall it was great. I adore the characters :)

Reading The House of Silk, the new Sherlock Holmes novel by Anthony Horowitz, and I'm really liking it so far. Just the first couple of chapters, and I can see why it's the only novel the Conan Doyle Estate have authorised. I'm not the biggest expert on Holmes, but I've read a few of the original stories, and what I've read so far really does match the unique ACD style perfectly.

Heather, I read GOOD OMENS directly after 11/22/63. The change from one favorite author to another favorite author, the change from one good book to another good book, the change in tone from darker to lighter - was exactly the right thing.
