+5 points for no sparkle!

But, if there's no romance, how are they love books? Do they love killing people? That'd be another +5 points.

I finally feel justified talking all this shit though. When it first came out I read half of Twilight, and I'd tell everyone how horrible it was, and they'd say, "You can't know that because you haven't read it!"

Well, now I have. It's about as entertaining and well written as RL Stine's Fear Street books.

Heather19
09-29-2010, 04:19 AM
I did that the last time I reread them. I will say it was a tiny bit distracting at first because some of the characters change, and I was still picturing them as they were in Desperation. But I loved it because you're able to pick up on all the little connections between the two. I think the first time I read them about a year apart, so I didn't see how similar they really were.

Also, I totally recommend reading Desperation and The Regulators back to back. I did it awhile back and you really do get a lot more out of it.

Also yes, if you have not read The Long Walk, absolutely do - it's one of King's best stories, IMHO.

And if you can get a copy of Rage, that's also a great story. It's too bad King took that one out of print.

Currrently reading: Roadwork

Roadwork is one of those stories that so many King (or Bachman) fans either forget or never read or don't care for. But it really is a masterpiece of the psychology of a man going through a personal crisis. The idea that we have a "circuit breaker" in our brains that leads us to do self-destructive things becasue we feel we have no choice is very interesting to me. We know that certain courses of action will lead to a bad end, yet we do them anyway. And find all sorts of ways to rationalize it.

The protagonist in the story is extremely sympathetic, what with the loss of his child, the situation with his wife and his job, and now losing the one thing he has left (his house). Even way back when, when King wrote this, it showed a maturity and understanding of the human character that most writers can only dream of.

I had originally intended to avoid the Sookie Stackhouse books so that I could enjoy the tv series for what it is. I am very bad at nitpicking film and television adaptions, so much so that it takes away from my enjoyment of the film/show. However, after the very weak finale of this season of True Blood, I decided to go ahead and read the books anyway. I am now on book 9, Dead and Gone and loving every bit of it.

After I finish these, I plan on reading a vampire book by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan called Strain.

Angier and the newspaper man deduce he is a twin, but Priest never actually comes out and says it. The evidence Angier finds says he can't be and that he must have altered his own records?

I was more intrigued by 'the pact' and how it came about and what it felt like from each brothers angle.

But it was only a teeny tiny gripe and i loved the rest of the book, especially the way it was written from each persons angle/diary

Hood, by Stephen R. Lawhead, book 1 of the King Raven Trilogy

If anyone is interested in what Robin Hood could have been, in a historically accurate setting, I highly recommend these books. It strays from the original legend, but I find it to be a good thing during some parts. It's a lot more realistic

OK, i don't know how popular Roald Dahl is everywhere else, but if you had asked that question in the UK, do you know what reaction you'd be most likely to get?

http://rob.nu/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/facepalm2.jpg

Fortunatly, you're american, so i can only assume that the total legend of every Brit's childhood is not quite as well known in the US. I can assume, anyway.

So you've never been to the UK, I take it? Because trust me, you wouldn't get that reaction. You'd probably get a couple of disagreements here and there, plenty of sarcastic comments of, "Well, DUH!", but never a facepalm. Like I said before, Doctor Who is fucking immortal. LOST is over. 'Nuff said!

Finally! Something we can completely agree on! I can't stand fish, but battered sausage is always good with chips. With lashings of salt and vineger. Only way to eat chips!

And you should read Roald Dahl. I didn't read that many Roald Dahl books, only stuff like James and the Giant Peach and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, you know, the most remembered ones, but I'm glad to know there's a "Best Of" compilation out there. Cheers for the recommendation, Letti!

Btw, has anyone on here read any Michael Moorcock? Moorcock's books about Elric of Melniboné are all kinds of awesome. I haven't read them in many years, though. There are also some comics based on the Elric books. If I were comparing them to other fantasy, it would probably be Howard's Conan stuff, but with more magic.

I've read Neon Rain by James Lee Burke a few years ago and really enjoyed it, but it's the only one of his I've read. I think if I re-read it or read others of his, I'd dig it even more now that I've actually visited New Orleans and fell in love with the atmosphere and culture.

I finished my A Song of Ice and Fire re-read last night, so I started a free book I got on my Kindle. It's called Depraved by Bryan Smith. It's a novel from the hardcore horror genre and the reviews I read sounded like it's extremely violent. I only read a few pages last night and have never read anything from this genre before, so I don't know if I'll like it or not, but hey, it was free. :D

The title story was awesome though, and I'm kind of thinking they should have based the movie on THAT. Also, Mister Scrap and Danger weren't in the original Million Dollar Baby story, they were their own short story, I guess they combined the two to flesh it out a bit. Still one of my favorite movies, and that is definitely a good book.

Ah, good ole Rincewind.

Excellent choice!

Have you read Small Gods? That is probably my favorite Discworld book.

or Carpe Jugulum

or Soul Music

or any with Granny Weatherwax, really.

Actually, the only other Discworld novel I've read in full is Thud!, so I decided to start from scratch when I saw a 3 for 2 offer in Waterstone's and read them in order. It's shocking that I've hardly read any though, especially how much I love Discworld Noir, which is what got me interested in the first place, really. Ever played that?

I haven't. I have played the first Discworld adventure game, though. It was a lot of fun.

If you can find Noir anywhere, get it. It's a lot of fun. New characters, really different feel to it than the usual Discworld stuff, but still one of the funniest and most quotable games I've ever played. "It made me think all the Disc's a stage, and all us men and women merely players. Unfortunatly, it also made feel as though I had been cast as an extra...in my own life story."

Also, Corporal "Nobby" Nobbs = win. Made me want to read a Watch book after his many brilliant appearances in the game.

So I'm very distraught by the graphic novel I am reading. Lost Girls, which is basically about wendy from peter pan, alice from alice in wonderland, and dorothy from wizard of oz. Spoilers below
It basically talks about their life and times, and it's all pretty much sex. I was excited about this, they are telling their stories as older women in the middle of their orgies and such. The upsetting part is that when they have flashback they're like, when I was 14... then go into a pretty filthy sex scene, and there are images to accompany it being a graphic novel. I'm no prude, or else I wouldn't be reading it, but the fact that they state their age, and it's very young, makes the ENTIRE book not enjoyable. If they could have just said 18 the book would be great, but no....

Are you talking about the Alan Moore book? Did you not look in the book before you bought it? Or read up on it?

Via Amazon :
Reviewed by Neil Gaiman : Almost 10 years before his The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen took many of the figures of Victorian popular fiction on a remarkable romp, Alan Moore, in collaboration with underground artist Melinda Gebbie, began Lost Girls, with a similar, although less fantastical, conceit: that the three women whose adventures in girlhood may have inspired respectively, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Peter Pan and Wendy and the Wizard of Oz, meet in a Swiss hotel shortly before the first World War. Wendy, Dorothy and Alice, three very different women—one jaded and old; one trapped in a frigid adulthood; the last a spunky but innocent young American good-time girl—provide each other with the liberation they need, while also providing very different (and, for this is a pornography, very sexual) versions of the stories we associate with them. We go with the girls, in memory, to the incidents that became the Rabbit Hole, Oz and Neverland. As a formal exercise in pure comics, Lost Girls is as good as anything Moore has written. (One of my favorite moments: a husband and wife trapped in a frozen, loveless, sexless relationship, conduct a stiff conversation, laced with unconscious puns and wordplay, moving into positions that cause their shadows to appear to copulate wildly, finding the physical passion that the people are denied.) In addition to being a master-class in comics technique, Lost Girls is also an education in Edwardian smut—Gebbie and Moore pastiche the pornography of the period, taking in everything from The Oyster to the Venus and Tannhauser period work of Aubrey BeardsleyMelinda Gebbie was a strange and inspired choice as collaborator for Moore. She draws real people, with none of the exaggerated bodies usual to superhero or porno comics. Gebbie's people, drawn for the most part in gentle crayons, have human bodies,.Lost Girls is a bittersweet, beautiful, exhaustive, problematic, occasionally exhausting work. It succeeded for me wonderfully as a true graphic novel. If it failed for me, it was as smut. The book, at least in large black-and-white photocopy form, was not a one-handed read. It was too heady and strange to appreciate or to experience on a visceral level. (Your mileage may vary; porn is, after all, personal.)Top Shelf has chosen to package it elegantly and expensively, presenting it to the world not as pornography, but as erotica. It is one of the tropes of pure pornography that events are without consequence. No babies, no STDs, no trauma, no memories best left unexamined. Lost Girls parts company from pure porn in precisely that place: it's all about consequences, not to mention war, music, love, lust, repression and memory.

They have so many versions, but I think there was a reprint of the original done sometime after 2000. I grew up incredibly poor, and I think this is what lead to my obsession because it had so much to do with imagination. It really is a fantastic tale!

it was so long since i read it, that i had forgotten what a fab book it is, i am currently reading Regulators now - and to show how long it is since i read both - i never realised he used the same characters names:doh: (it was approx 10 years since i read desperation and then years in between each book.) I actually got a bit of a kick out of it. It was like he had thrown names into a hat and then tagged them to a character, and then did the same again for Regulators (i know what i mean:unsure:)

at the moment, Desperation has the edge on Regulators but i will come back to you on that one once I have finished it. Desperation is definatley back in the top ten. (i always love rediscovering a book)

I have been reading a lot of Peter Straub lately. I read his Blue Rose Trilogy (Koko, Mystery, The Throat) and I love them all. I have also read Lost Boy, Lost Girl, and The Hell-Fire Club. Both of these are very chilling novels.

I started reading Peter Straub because he wrote two books with Stephen King and I wanted to get know him and his writing better. You never know, maybe some of Peter Straub's characters could show up in the third book of The Talisman and Black House series. (I think it would be awesome if there was a Fee Bandileor a.k.a Franklin Bachelor vs. Jack Sawyer!)

I just read this, lookin for Shambhala Myth : It's really amazing , even through the "DARK TOWER"'s light : it seems that Stephen King had a visionary metaphoric VISION about this (Myth ?) he knows probably by name but without consciously beeing thinking at this, when he writes This initiatic Thing : The Dark Tower (even if he told about It that he doesn't really knows, writing this huge modern odyssey, where (&why ?) he was going to ............. the // more than ever seems amazing to me ..

Oh I think you would love them! Especially the first trilogy set. There are 13 books total in the main story line, and are for the most part broken into story arches over 3 books. The first 3 are simply magnificent! Of course, I'm not saying the other ones aren't any good, but if you read any of them make sure you start at the beginning.

This is actually only one of 4 books I am reading right now - I'm also in the middle of John Dies at the End by David Wong, The Lost Hero, of the Heroes of Olympus series by Rick Riordan, and The TARDIS handbook :)

Define "beginning", since I know chronologically the Dark Elf trilogy is first, but the Icewind Dale books were written before those. What's more ideal: written order or chronological order? Or is either way good to read?

alkanto
11-13-2010, 05:53 PM
Personally, I find the Dark Elf Trilogy (Homeland, Exile, Sojourn) to be the best. Those 3 are generally placed at books. Though, the Icewind Dale trilogy is also quite good! Reading them in established book order though, is interesting. I think it's fairly easy to tell which books he wrote first. Thy style change is subtle - no more of a style change than what naturally happens over most series - but more noticable, I think because we are reading it from a "backwards" standpoint. The first 3 books are a little more polished, I think.

Chronologically, I think it makes more sense to start with Homeland. There's nothing that is given away about those 3 in the Icewind Dale trilogy, but you understand Drizzt and his actions better if you read his backstory first.
