Atlas Shrugged. After talking about it I had to read it again.

You've read it before ?! How is it ? It's been on my to-read list for a long time but I always end up picking up something else instead.
Read it a bunch of times. IDK if you'll like it. I like it, but I skim/skip all the very heavy preachy stuff.

I spent all but the first chapter slapping my forehead wondering why I had never read the book before...DOH! I missed out on years of rereads of an awesome thriller!

I just started reading Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz. It's my first Koontz book. I think I like it so far, I'm not really far enough into it to know yet though. It's funny-ish and seems interesting. Any opinions?

i love the Odd Thomas books, its quite consistant in the humour.

Still working my way through Harry Potter. Almost finished Goblet of Fire... can't believe how attached I've become to the characters. Spent a busy day today catching up on the first three movies. Found them pretty enjoyable too, and fairly true to the books.

Still working my way through Harry Potter. Almost finished Goblet of Fire... can't believe how attached I've become to the characters. Spent a busy day today catching up on the first three movies. Found them pretty enjoyable too, and fairly true to the books.

I have yet to read any of the books. Have seen a couple of the movies though (not sure which ones, my buddy got me into them). I was surprised how much i enjoyed them though. One of those things I didn't want to experience just because of the hype.

Currently reading The Drawing of the Three. Also have a strong temptation to start reading The Stand (would be my first read through). Not sure if i should wait until i'm done with the Dark Tower or just read both at the same time. Any advice?

Brice

I'd say if it's your first reading of TDT hold off till you're done for the stand.

The HP books are light years beyond the movies.

deadohsky: how do you mean, first reading of The Stand?

::shocked::

just drop everything, I repeat everything, and read The Stand now

Seriously, it will enrich your further Dark Tower experience, too

ETA: What Brice said, concerning both the Stand and HP

'Embarassed' lol. Being honest, it is (would) my first read through of The Stand and of The Dark Tower.

I have had the books for a while (four years since my father passed; he was protective [understandably so] while he was alive) but i have yet to read them through. I won't make excuses for not reading them. I have just gotten ('REALLY') back into reading recently. The majority of my library (see signature) is Stephen King. I have read a number of them [The Shining, The Green Mile, Misery, Christine, Apt Pupil, etc.] Just now getting into the 'heavier' stuff. Please forgive lol, i'm still young lol.

Just curious if it would be advantageous to finish The Dark Tower before I start The Stand, or if it matters that much. I know they are connected.

Brice

Better than DT? I dunno...that's kinda like comparing apples and oranges.
ASOIAF is more like a history of a fantasy world, and DT is like a journal of some travelers' adventures through a fantasy world. ASOIAF certainly has more details about it's world.

DoctorDodge
08-31-2010, 03:26 PM
Well, I only read the stories occasionally, not on a daily basis or anything, but i've enjoyed reading them so far. And the idea of a brilliantly intelligent victorian detective-consultant who solves difficult crimes not because of money but purely because they're the only thing that keep him from getting bored (other than morphine or cocaine, of course) is still too awesome to this very day!

Right now, I'm currently reading Faction Paradox: This Town Will Never Let Us Go, and it's one of the strangest novels I've read. Not sure if I really enjoy it or not. It's clever, I must admit, which is why I bought it - the author, Lawrence Miles, had written a couple of Dr Who novels that I felt didn't work at all as Dr Who stories but were really great at being hardcore scifi that gave you ideas about time travel, culture and politics that really fucked with your head. It's great to read stuff from him that's moved away from the Who canon, but there are times when it seems he's being too clever for his own good. As a complex ideas novel, I'm really liking it so far, but I'm not so sure it's good as a novel with a plot, yet. Although I'm only halfway through, so who knows: maybe everything - or some things, at least - will make sense towards the end!

Ricky
08-31-2010, 03:29 PM
DD, if you love Sci-Fi (which I'd bet on), I highly recommend Christopher Priest. Since you're in the UK, it should be a bittle easier for you to find some of his novels.

DoctorDodge
08-31-2010, 03:38 PM
Actually Ricky, if I'm really being honest, I'm pretty selective when it comes to scifi, and I hardly read science fiction novels at all. I'm not the kind of person who really enjoys the space opera novels set far, far in the future or anything like that. The only reason I've enjoyed Lawrence Miles's books so far is they usually have something to say about the world we live in, whilst really fucking up your head with some overwhelmingly complex time travel ideas. Now complex time travel stuff, that I love, but not much else to do with scifi. Hell, I even consider my favourite show ever to be truly crap scifi most of the time because the science most of the time is completely ignored and usually explained with technobabble or a joke or, even better, both. ("It must be a spatial temporal hyperlink!" "And what's that?" "No idea, just made it up. I didn't want to say 'magic door'.") It's just used as a storytelling device to chase after scary monsters in space or travel backwards and forwards in time. It's really not that great as science fiction. It's just everything else that it's good at!

That's not to say i'm reluctant to read any scifi novels at all. What are Christopher Priest's books like, Ricky?

I wouldn't say that he's as much Sci-Fi as he is focusing on world issues and the human mind with science used to further his point. In my opinion, he is the literary equivilent to Christopher Nolan.

The great thing about Priest is that his science is well thought out, totally believable, and character driven. You really have to read him to understand his style. It's hard for me to explain, but it's phenomenal.

I really, really, think you'd love him. And he does focus on time travel in some novels. :)

Read any Sherlock Holmes, Ricky? They're all pretty much short and sweet, and even though I've only read a few of the early stories, Holmes has to be one of my favourite characters in literature.
Bears concur.

Yes! If you are looking for some good reading, try any and all of the adventures of Sherlock Holmes!
I especially like 'The Sign of the Four'.

From the summary, it sounds fuck all like Hitchhiker's (which I've enjoyed everything i've read, heard and watched so far, except the movie: movie sucked). Hitchhiker's is the story of a man in his pyjamas travelling the universe after the Earth's exploded. And is clearly a comedy.

Ender's Game, from the synopsis, is about a boy who has to go through a seriously tough military programme to fight off an evil alien force. It might be my cup of tea, I don't know, but I really can't see any resemblance to Hitchhiker's at all!

Fair enough, but I still don't see any resemblance to it when reading a summary of Ender's Game. Doctor Who's closer to Hitchhiker's Guide than this, imo.

Well, I only read one summary, which could've very well skipped out on other info. or was biased. Since you've actually read it, I'd tend to believe you over a summary, though.

Actually, i haven't read it, just going by quite a few non-spoiler summaries to see if it's Douglas Adams-eque at all. Nope, nothing there, but I could be wrong!

And by the way, I've only seen one ep. of Doctor Who, but: Doctor Who>HHGTTG. ;)

Oh trust me, there's no doubt of that. Doctor Who>most other stuff, really! (Although Douglas Adams did write a couple of my favourite stories from the old series in the Tom Baker years, but I think you'd enjoy them more than the Hitchhiker's books. Still a lot of humour in them, but nothing quite as ridiculous. Except for a fight between a Robot Dog and a Robot Parrot, of course. Way more clever, too.)

Anyway, back to my Sherlock Holmes recommendation, now's definitely a good time to start checking out a few of the original stories, Ricky. Especially with the modern day Sherlock getting shown in BBCAmerica in a couple of months (of which I have to get the dvd that's just been released in the UK). Holmes fans - sod that, any fan of great tv - I strongly suggest checking that out: Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss have done for Sherlock Holmes what Christopher Nolan did for Batman, and anyone who doubts me on this, watch 3rd episode The Great Game, some of the best and most thrilling television I've watched ever!

I thought it was ok, but...I don't know, I just thought it was a bit bland, to be honest. I liked that they included a lot of eccentricities about Holmes in there, like being a master of disguise, and at least Watson wasn't a bumbling idiot like in so many other adaptations, but honestly? The modern day version is much, much better. And surprisingly, even with mobile phones and Watson writing a blog, a lot more faithful, too. Keep an eye out for that one.

Maybe because I have lived in a dystopian world, I see such a lot of flaws in such novels as this. They read as if the author doesn't even begin to understand half of how things work... and didn't bother to find out.

Ricky
09-03-2010, 11:19 AM

Oh, I don't think that's fair to say of Huxley. BNW may have been too simplistic, but it's certainly not the case that he never studied or had serious concern about real politics.

It's an interesting argument, though. Look at A Clockwork Orange; it's so well-crafted in terms of linguistics and, on some levels, in its sociological projections, yet its view of human psychology does seem rather half-baked. :orely:

That's exactly my main gripe with BNW. It's like Huxley was far too concerned with making the reader aware of his political views and worries, rather than tucking them in their subtly and revolving the politics around the characters, instead of the other way around.

pathoftheturtle
09-04-2010, 08:20 AM
Well, if he'd tucked that in there subtly, the novel might have been more believably naturalistic, but I think that you're begging the question of how important that really is. Holmes and Dracula? You mean there is a book that combines my two favorite literary big-weights, and I didn't know about it!

Either way, let me know how it is. Sounds interesting.

I read this series in high school (25+ years ago lol) so I don't remember it well, but I'm about 70 pages in and it's one chapter Vlad, one chapter Sherlock; at some point I suspect they meet to solve the crime. As the reader you can see their paths are going to cross, and since Watson is writing about the Holmes side of the story, you get some good insight.

I remember reading these several times in high school, but being it's been so long, I've mostly forgotten them. They are awesome, though.

This is the second book. This stands on its own, but if you read The Dracula Tape first it may make more sense. That one is the Bram Stoker novel told from Vlad's point of view, and trust me, he's hilarious. He has NO USE for Van Helsing, that's for sure.

If I remember correctly, each book can stand on its own, but as a series you get all of Vlad's personality though the ages. I have five more - I'll let you know for sure when I finish.

They are out of print now, I believe, but you can pick them up for a couple bucks each either on the secondary market at Amazon or on Abe's Books - I'd check Abe's first as I think I found them cheaper on there.

Just look under Saberhagen's Dracula series - if you can't find them all, let me know and I can give you all the titles.

The Passage by Justin Cronin

Here is what Stephen King says about it on the back cover:

"Every so often a novel-reader's novel comes along: an enthralling, entertaining story wedded to simple, supple prose, both informed by tremendous imagination. Summer is the perfect time for such books, and this year readers can enjoy the gift of Justin Cronin’s The Passage. Read fifteen pages and you will find yourself captivated; read thirty and you will find yourself taken prisoner and reading late into the night. It has the vividness that only epic works of fantasy and imagination can achieve. What else can I say? This: read this book and the ordinary world disappears."

I must say that, so far, I agree.

Oh geez, I haven't read that one since Mr. Joiner's fifth grade.

Finally started Dorian Gray. It's taking some getting used to getting back in to reading something other than the pared down, wham bam thank you ma'am writing you get with today's authors.

was having a nice convo with Blash yesterday about kids books we love. The Obnoxious Jerks and Island of the Blue Dolphins were mutual loves.

Yes it is.

The Great Brain series was another favorite of mine that I want to find and re-read. I know Annabeth would like them and I'm almost positive even Emmy would, too.

I remember reading, and very much enjoying, a book titled "The Great Brain", written from the perspective of a kid whose older brother was "The Great Brain". Is this what your talking about? I didn't know that it was a series.

Edit: Duh, just noticed and followed the link.

I think I'm going to give up on Imajica, Braker just takes soooo long to get into the story and get to the point, I've really been forcing myself to read on. But, so many people here love it - like Feev, who's recommendations I've really enjoyed - so...should I persevere?

Done The Great and Secret Show, I did have to plod on with that in parts, but it was worth the effort.

Next up though after Imajica I have a Tim Powers book, he rules

He is insanely awesome! You should start with Last Call, which is part of a trilogy based around Fisher King mythology. I would send them to you, but I gave my spare copies to Goddy after I bought the SubPress signed/numbered set :D

I haven't read Imajica yet, but my experience of Barker is just the opposite: he gets to the point very quick, and finishes the story, and then can't stop for another few dozen pages.

Barker's a strange writer, that's for sure.

Actually with the one you're referring to, I must completely restart it. My bookmark got knocked out of the book and I'm really not sure where I was exactly. <_< I do have a trade paperback on it's way to me soon though so then I'll be able to take it to work with me.

just picked up my re-read of The Wheel of Time - 4th time? Starting this chunk on The Dragon Reborn. My hope is that by the time I get around to reading all of them, the last book will finally be out!
I bought a hardcover copy of the 11th book, but I haven't touched it...I want to tackle the ending in one blow.
