Oh man, the Silmarillion was too much for me. It was like a history text book. I just wanted someone to highlight the good parts for me so I could skip the rest.

yeah, i could never get more than 50-100 pages into it. it put me to sleep.

High Fidelity - Nick Hornby I read this book years ago and I'm really fond of it, as it reminds me so much of a friend of mine who sadly died. When the film came out, even though it sounded great - I didn't want to go watch it, as I like picturing my friend as Rob, the main character :)

That aside, its a brilliant book anyway (as are About A Boy and Fever Pitch). His observations of people and our inner monologues are so astute, and relayed with a spot on dry wit.

Much as I would like to accept the honor, I am afraid it is undeserved. I think it is easier for a non-native speaker (provided he feels free enough in the language, of course), because a native speaker expects the text to be in his native language, and may be somewhat shocked when he can't read it the dialect part as naturally as the rest. For a foreigner, however, both are foreign language, so none of his expectations are frustrated. More foreign, less foreign, is just a matter of degree.

Anyway, as a literary character I like Huck more but so far I like Tom's story better than Huck's. *shrugs*

Okay, I had questions about this book a bit ago. I've been able to read more of it, but haven't finished it. My opinion is, if you're a Tolkien fan, it's a must. However, it reads the same. It goes more indepth into one of the stories in The Lost Tales and The Silmarillion. You don't have to read either of the latter books, but I would recommend it. However, if you don't, read the introduction, because it explains the original tales. Oh, and since this book was finished by Christopher Tolkien, it's not exactly the same, and he explains at the beginning that he changed some things. But other than that, it is more stories of the Tolkien world.

Japan is a totalitarian society and sends one class of Juniors, chosen by the impartial government, to a deserted island, provides them with weapons and tells them to kill all their classmates. The last one alive can go home. To make sure the rules are kept to and that students don't linger in one area too long, each student is wearing a collar, which monitors their pulse, sends information back to the HQ of their position, and if necessary, explodes killing who ever is wearing it. Each hour a new area of the island is deemed a Danger Zone, whoever is in there has their collars explodes. If no one dies within a 24 hour period, all collars explode. And thats the beginning...

I don't mind those "long and boring" build ups :D I loved Black House, Insomnia and Lisey's Story which are all often accused of being that way inclined - infact, I tend to expect those leisurely SK intros now.

I'm with ya Lisa, I like the leisurely build ups.

Okay, I finished "The Children of Hurin". It's good, but it is a tuff read. And it's nothing really exciting.
Pretty much tells of the story of the death of Hurin's children and how "man" is almost always corruptible. And how Hurin was finally released from the prison's of Morgoth so he could go to his children's graves and see his wife as she exhales her last breath. Foreshadows the fall of man.

the thing is, neither Black House nor Insomnia seemed to me either long or boring at the beginning (or, in case of Black House, ever). I'll expand on it when I've finished Lisey's Story.

Insomnia sure seemed long to get to the meat of the story for me, Black House less so. Not that I'm complaining considering both books are my favorites under the Dark Tower series.

About 100 pages into D. Claiborne. It gets more and more interesting as you get deeper into the story, although I'm not sure if I needed a 6 page description of an old hag shitting her pants and the sheets.

I went to Borders today in hopes of purchasing Battle Royale and/or The Wanting Seed (Anthony Burgess), but they had neither. :(

I have never been able to find anything except Clockwork Orange by Burgess in any chain book store. Did you try ordering it/them?

Although I love the book a lot, it's something I've never stopped wondering about. Probably two pages would have sufficed.

Yeah, the only thing people (and bookstores!) know or care to know about Burgess is A Clockwork Orange. ::shakes fist:: I was planning on ordering it online anyway, but I was already there at the store to buy something for my brother so I figured I'd kill two birds with one stone. Guess it's ordering-online time!

Jean - I agree 100%. I wonder what was going on in the King household when he was writing that part? :excited:

Yes, let us hope he doesn't do an uncut version of this book where he expands this part of the story.

Yeah, I'd check online. It surprised me, but our local small time library has a large selection of his books.

I know what you're saying, but I thought the shitty bed episode was well done, I thought it was so indepth to illustrate the extent of her maliciousness.

Well, that was my point Jean :D When I said "long and boring" I was quoting part of your post where you were saying a particular comment was probably a euphemism for "long and boring". I was agreeing with you, that I don't find the slow build ups long or boring either

You really should read Insomnia Patrick. As a Dark Tower fan I'm really surprised you haven't. It's one of my favorite non-Dark Tower books.

Please everyone, don't overlook the above dialog, it's one of the best examples of quick reaction, good timing and use of metalanguage I've ever seen; thank you AllHail.

1.) The it in question is Lisey's Story. I really liked IT.

2.) I just finished Black Hole by Charles Burns. Holy shit--I normally am not one for graphic novels (just call them comics for fuck's sake), but this one was incredible. Touching, tragic, and engrossing, it shows everything right and wrong with being a teenager. All I can say is pick it up if you see it.
