glad you liked it, you'll love HIA, The title story, as well as Low Men In Yellow Coats, were my two favorites.

I'm currently rereading A Song of Ice and Fire for the 3rd time. I'm taking it slow this time, if I'm lucky I'll finish the last one around the time they publish a Dance With Dragons.

Choke (by Palahniuk, of course)

::triple meh::

You don't like it?

Apparently Jean isn't into it, Heather. Oh well, we'll miss him in the Chuck P. thread.

I hope to post there sooner or later, only I am afraid what I can say will sound very much like what Hannah already said there.

I can't say I don't like it, or I can't say I like it; I don't find anything to like or dislike. It's the same sarcastic cud all over again, the same intellectual blah blah blah which makes one wonder how he can separate it into what he for some reason calls "novels". (more later, in the appropriate thread)Huhn. Well, personally, I can say that I didn't like Choke, although I do think that "meh" really would say it better in my case, as well. However, I love Fight Club, so I don't think i'm really getting this mini-analysis of yours, Jean. I'll have to pop by that thread, too, if I get time, by & by. :orely:

I always recommend "The Book" first for those who want to start reading his work.

it is an excellent place to begin with watts.

i also have a fairly good selection of his speeches on audio and often start people with those. i find his voice hypnotizing in and of itself, and then there's what he's actually saying. i've gotten several people hooked on watts that way. once they've heard him speak, they devour his books.

No, the "as usual" part referred only to the difference between bears' and people's opinion on the "slow" and "quick" development; it's the same for me in Insomnia, where I love everything until the last sixth (approximately) where the fuss starts annoys the bear immensely, or Talisman (ditto, until the last quarter or so). http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/mishemplushem/Facilitation/0134-bear.gifhttp://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/mishemplushem/Facilitation/0134-bear.gifhttp://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/mishemplushem/Facilitation/0134-bear.gif

How'd you like Under the Dome?

And I know I mentioned this before but you have to pick up Summer of Night, and The Terror. Those are my two favorite Simmons books.

And I hate to say it but after I finished Under the Dome, I ended up picking up another book instead of Drood! I'm enjoying the story, but in this one he seems to be going off in extremely long detail about certain people or events, and I'm just having difficulty getting through those portions. Well I just started Chapter 13, so I'm already a little over 200 pages in. It's at the part where Wilkie goes to Dickens house for Christmas, and there's a surprise guest. In the beginning of the chapter he just goes into detail about this other person, who I could honestly care less about. I'm really enjoying the current story, and wish he'd stick more to that.

Maybe when I'm done reading the other book I started I'll come back to this one and just skip over the beginning of this chapter or something. But I just hate to do that.

The Hobbit. I have a lot of problems with most fantasy books so I've stayed away from Tolkien. I can't believe how hard it is to put it down. Still trying to get through House of Leaves as well...but with a 2 year old and a 1 year old that is almost impossible.

"What's in my pocket," Asks the boyfriend pointing at the buldge in is front jean pocket. The girlfriend reaches in and screams, "You cut a hole in your pocket you jerk!"
He laughs, "Thought it was a ring didn't you, couldn't find one to make you disappear though."

Finished Dan Simmon's novella, MUSE OF FIRE. Only the second Simmons book I've read (first was DROOD). I loved it.

Finished UNDER THE DOME.

I just want it to get back to the story.

I had a little trouble at first with it also, but I just kept plugging away and it's now one of my favorites. The atmosphere takes some getting used to, as does the era.

John
Well I just started Chapter 13, so I'm already a little over 200 pages in. It's at the part where Wilkie goes to Dickens house for Christmas, and there's a surprise guest. In the beginning of the chapter he just goes into detail about this other person, who I could honestly care less about. I'm really enjoying the current story, and wish he'd stick more to that.

Maybe when I'm done reading the other book I started I'll come back to this one and just skip over the beginning of this chapter or something. But I just hate to do that.
Heather, I really liked UNDER THE DOME, but I suppose I should save commentary for the book's dedicated thread.

Stick with DROOD. It gets weirder and better as it progresses.

MUSE OF FIRE, available here from the publisher (http://www.subterraneanpress.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=SP&Product_Code=simmons05) but cheaper on Amazon, was a beautiful story.

Patrick, Born on a Blue Day looks like an interesting book. I think autistic savants are fasinating. Be sure to give us a review.
I'm about 60% of the way through. So far, there's not really a big story, rather it seems to be simply a first hand view into life growing up with this condition - a perspective that most people with the condition cannot communicate. It's pretty interesting.

Haha, that reminds me of Holly in Red Dwarf having all his memories of Agatha Christie novels erased so he can read 'em all again! Oh, if only we could all forget about the awesome novels we read so we could get that "first time" feeling back!

Admittedly, whilst reading Wolves of the Calla, i'm surprised how much i've forgotten from the final 3 volumes. Although there is a lot that is unforgettable. Especially, of course, THAT ending, but i'm glad there's a few details that are still foggy.

And I'm glad to say that Wolves is still brilliant!

Neither of us have read Lion yet, I read Wicked at the start of the year and it's taken Terry this long to finally give into my constant nagging to actually read the damn thing - now he's hooked! (james 1 - Terry nil) he's planning to read the next one and then Lion I think.

I would literally sell my soul for a chance to go and see Wicked! Meh, I doubt I could have gotten through it if I hadn't seen the movie. Half of it looks like it belongs in a script rather than a novel, and the other looks like it belongs in a non-fiction information book rather than a novel. A novelist Peter George wasn't (so I don't know why he wrote a novelization of the film....).

I am, however, having fun learning the names of the characters before Stanley Kubrick gave them funny names....

Well, I like NF books, but I despise scripts/screenplays. So, I might like it, but probably not.

It kind of picks up a little after the first 1/3 of the book, and it's fun to see how some of the lines of the movie were lifted directly from it (and I can see where the humor factor came from for Kubrick).

I won't say don't read it at all but I would sooner recommend watching the movie than reading this.

I don't know if you mean the one by Gergory MacGuire (i think that's how you spell it) if you do I have and its AMAZING!! like beyond AMAZING!! (it's so exciting i had to use capitals....twice!!) :)

Its part of a Trilogy with Wicked being the first, then Son of A Witch followed by Lion Amongst Men. (which is all about the Cowardly Lion). I've not read the 2 other books but I got them for my hubby at Xmas and he's raving about Son of A Witch.

Wicked is very good, quite dark in parts and surprisingly political. Very good book and highly worth a read!! :)

Hey how is Pirate Latitudes? I read Eaters of the Dead by Crichton, I thought it was good, just the same basic story of the 13th Warrior and a different version of Beowulf.

MORD, gotta say I love your av/sig combo. I was talking about that movie a while back in my FB page.

Hahah I know I'm one of the peeps that was talking to you about it!
Duh...i forgot who it was, thought it was Ruthful and Nando for some reason.

I recommend ANYTHING by Crichton. So far all of the books I have read of his were awesome. Almost done with them all, too.

Pretty good so far. It's the first "pirate" story I've read so I doubt I'll be disappointed. It seems to fit in with his earlier(?) writing style, feels like Five Patients which was excellent!

The Lost Symbol is a good read, though not my favorite Dan Brown novel. I was actually a bit disappointed with it but thought that he had all the right points, just too many of them and some just didn't gel with the others.

If you liked his previous work, I'm sure you'll like TLS.

(1) Love MC though, with the exception of Airframe, which I just finished reading. I have Lost Symbol on my shelf, but haven't gotten to it yet.

(2) SWTWC is awesome. Bradbury reads like poetry.

(3) Where were you guys when we covered SWTWC in our book of the month club? Looks like you got some good reading ahead of you.

(1) I would be really interesting in hearing why you disliked Airframe. I realize it was a huge change of pace for Crichton, but I liked his take on the mystery/detective genre. I thought it was a good "refresher" book when I read every book of his back-to-back (which is what I am doing with Stephen King, except I've added a few Bradbury books to break up the longer King ones).

(2) So far I have to agree with you: Something Wicked This Way Comes is fantastic. This is the scene I'm on: Mr. Dark is searching the library for Jim & Will and Mr. Halloway has had a heart attack. I have no idea if he lives or dies, however. I'm very much hoping he lives. Mr. Halloway is my favorite character. Then Jim. Then Will.

(3) I'm sorry, I really wish I had been on this site longer, but I joined the day I found out it existed. The book club looks like it has some interesting reading, so I'm not surprised to see Bradbury made it on there. And yes, I would have to agree that I have a lot of good reading ahead of me. I just wish I had more time recently to read all of it; this is going to take me a while! This semester is going to be hell-in-a-hand-basket if my first week is any indication.

Yeah, the movies were second-rate for the most part. Have you seen all 6 movies so far? Ironically enough, the fourth book was, quite possibly, my favorite Harry Potter book while I thought the movie was one of the worst. Which book are you on?

Anyway, fantastic book. On to Fahrenheit 451!

Alright, I will agree with that. As long as they remember to think about it or pick it back up in a few years, then kids under 15 should read it, too. Another concern I had was how descriptive and thoroughly poetic Bradbury's prose are. But, they can learn to deal it.

I have read some really good stuff in my English classes, too! My class at the moment is focusing on Invisible Citites by Italo Calvino. It is an imagined depiction of Marco Polo's descriptions of the citites of Kublai Khan's vast empire as told during their conversation. It's very socially responsive and makes you think a lot about our society. Along with this book, I would suggest anyone to watch the documentary Bomb It which relates to Calvino's "Cities and Signs" (chapter(s) title). Sorry for rambling, I just really enjoy this assignment haha

I have not had a chance to read Dandelion Wine. It is set in Green Town, Illinois, though, so obviously I'm a bit interested. All I know is that it's considered to be the "summer to SWTWC's autumn." Not to mention it is somewhat autobiographical, and I think it would be very cool to read a bit about what Bradbury was like as an adolescent.
