I say that. When I started to read it (this Friday) I wake up at 1 o'clock in the morning and usually I go back to sleep if I wake up in the middle of the night but this time I opened the book and I kept reading for hours.

It's about a boy whose I.Q. is 68 and with an operation it gets 185 and more. And the way he is changing and he can understand things and his past and all his fights inside.
Incredible book.

Flowers for Algernon won the Hugo award when it was published in 1966. I read it first when it was published in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction as a novellete, then later when it was expanded to novel size and remain even now as one of its biggest fans. It is simply a GREAT book!

I am currently reading Eaters of the Dead by Michael Crichton. Not a bad read, and for anyone that has seen The 13th Warrior, this book is what the movie was based off of. Well, maybe not this book, but this book is the re-write of the ancient manuscript about the true account of Ahmad Ibn Fadlan who became the 13th Warrior when he met a band of Northmen (or Norsemen) on his way some place else.

I had that debate..with myself..and I couldn't really say if it is real or not. I googled Ahmad Ibn Fadlan, and I guess he was a real person of the time and such. Of course, I haven't researched in depth.

I liked the idea when I first saw it; I am not so sure I agree, though. Wolf lived his life quite in harmony with himself before he was taken away to the wrong world; Blaze was ruined and made an alien to his world from very early in life, and somehow I feel that it matters. It now appears certain that the 'final' Book 12 'A Memory of Light' will actually be 3 Books, to be released November '09 / November '10 / November '11.
This sits well with me, because I never believed the story could be satisfactorily completed in just 1 book anyway - I don't think Robert Jordan himself (RIP) could have finished it in one either.

Strange how the most books I'm reading, are rereads.. But that's how I define a good book: you can read it again and again and learn something new every time. I recently finished IT, and am now starting Dead Zone - I've been with sai King's books a lot lately! (and you wonder why I sometimes see such colourful nightmares.. erm.)

Should find something new. I'm still avoiding that brick-thick Ken Follett, 'World Without End', sigh.. =P

It was pretty good. I found it amusing after a bit that about 90% of the essayists seemed to hit upon many of the same quotations from the book regardless of what they're chapters were about, but they were almost all quotes that I memorized when I was 12 because I thought they were all pretty important ones.

I also really liked that one of the writers made a point of calling Peter Jackson out on the drastic change he made in Faramir's character and how that diminished from a perfect example of one of the only mortal characters able to wholly resist the temptation of the Ring.

Faramir was Boromir's brother, son of Denethor, and his heir after Boromir's death. (though Denethor held him in scant regard, especially knowing that Faramir would follow Gandalf's lead rather than his fathers).

What Jayson mentions above was one of the major criticisims of Peter Jackson's decisions, certainly THE major one for me personally (the ONLY one of any great consequence for me, excepting perhaps the Scouring and the consequent change in the death of Sauruman). How could he have mis-read or mis-understood Faramir's character from the Book so badly? Faramir had the Ring in his power, right there to be taken, and he let Frodo go and pitied him for the task that lay ahead of him. 'Noble' doesn't begin to describe it.

Lily-sai

I have to agree about Faramir's character with ManofWesternesse. I am no director and I understand a lot of Jackson's decisions.. but couldn't he have skipped the attack of Wargs, for example, and develop Faramir's personality further? Ah, well.
(and I was sad to see the beautiful Henneth Annûn as just a rocky and wet place. :()

No, No! not the Wargs!

The Regulators is a strange one (but hell we're talking King here!), but not bad at all.

I agree Lily, he could DEFINITELY have skipped the Wargs, especially considering that it never happened in the books! Jackson's sacrifice of Tolkien's material for his own material is the primary complaint I have with the changes he made.

And I agree completely about Henneth Annun. One of the few things I did enjoy about the movies was the look of the locations, but I expected a bit more from that one.

I just read through the sample pages of "Flowers for Algernon" on Amazon and one thing that's a bit jarring to me is the artificial and inconsistent way of the misspellings at the beginning of the novel. It just seemed implausible that the character would spell certain simple words wrong but then spell more complex words correctly. Perhaps doing this more consistently would render the text nearly unreadable, but it just struck me as inauthentic, sorry. Though I'm sure it's a great novel, it looks like it is, so I may give it a try later.

I am sure it must have been very hard for the author to write this book. Once he had to write like a moron (his word) and later like a genius with very high I.Q. For me the genius part was a bit more simple than I had expected but I must say the book is still more than wonderful and amazing.
Anyway the boy who writes the report goes to special school to be able to spell so it can be okay that he makes horrible mistakes but time to time he can write down harder words well.

Ooh, Rick Hautala is partly a Finn. It might amuse you to hear 'hauta' means 'grave' in Finnish - quite fitting for a horror writer, isn't it? ;) I've read 'Cold Whisper' by him, quite enjoyable!

Yes it is!!!:wtf: Cold Whisper huh! I will have to try and find that one, Is it a book or a short story?

It's a book, worth of trying! Let me know if you read it and what you thought about it. :)

I have only about 20 pages left in what might possibly be one of the best three books I have ever picked up. And that includes anything King has written. And for me to say that is a grand thing, as SK is my all time favorite writer and all of his books are in my top "10". until now.
I am by no means a fan of anything non-fiction, for the most part. They tend to bore me. But my neighbor lent me a book that he thought might mean something to me, and in fact it did.

You guys have GOT to check this one out.

The title is LONE SURVIVOR by Marcus Luttrell. He is a Navy SEAL and this is a first hand account of a special ops mission he was on, and the SEAL training he went through to get him there. He, along with his closest three comrades (SEAL team 10) are dropped in the middle of Taliban country in the mountains of Afghanistan. They face insurmountable odds and as you might discern from the title, he is the only one to make it out alive. Rescue teams are subsequently massacred, and the toll in American lives totals 19, of which he is the only one to make it out. It sends chills up my spine to read it, and I was captivated unlike any other book I have ever picked up before. I won't give the story away, but I strongly urge any living, breathing person who reads this post to either get this book or check it out at the library.
I will be buying my own copy along with two more copies to mail out. One for my brother-in-law, and one for my cousin, both Iraq conflict veterans who engaged their opposition first-hand, and carry anguish and nightmares to this day because of what they saw and endured.
I was never a strong supporter for the way we went in Iraq, but I will say until my last breath that this book puts a new perspective on the conflicts in Afghanistan for me, and a deep respect for what those soldiers have to deal with. He also portays the Afghani people in a very favorable and appreciative light. It was the peace-loving compassion for human life by the good percentage of those people that saved his life, and he talks as highly about them as he does his own SEAL team members. And he makes sure that everyone who reads it knows that it is the Taliban we are fighting, not the honest and empathetic Afghani tribesmen as a unit. Compelling and captivating until the end, this book is an awesome work.

I'm not surprised you find it hard to concentrate...that book is really hard work! I've tried reading it twice and couldn't get through it, although I wanted to because I'm still very drawn to it. has anyone else read and/or listened to child of all nations by irmgard keun? i just finished it and i have to say that i'm at a bit of a loss here. i would say that i don't want to give anything away but there really isn't anything to give away. it's just the ramblings of this little girl about her growing up in different places. it's very jumpy, disjointed, and at times more than a little boring.

if anyone else has read or listened to this novel i'd appreciate your input. maybe it's worth a second listen? maybe i missed some key elements? i'm just very confused by it right now. confused more in the why did i read it sense. . . .

oh, and just for the bear and razz. i have downloaded blaze and am going to give it another go. we'll see. . . . there must be something there that i am missing and sometimes when i listen to a book it gets into me more than just reading it can. if you both give it such high marks then it must be a worthwhile read. so i'll let you know how it goes. :crosses fingers:

I want to savor the Repairman Jack series - don't rush me!

Having said that, I JUST finished World War Z (MAJOR thumbs up - READ THIS BOOK!) and am now reading A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snickett.

Yeah, yeah, I know. But I got the whole series for $30 on eBay (thank you eBay Mastercard bonus points) and I love a good dark children's story. Plus, I feel the urge for something "light". :D

I think I told you this before, but definitely pick it up. Not as good as 20th Century Ghosts, in my opinion, but still an excellent story and worth a read.

Just wrapped up the Dark Tower series and I pulled down well thumbed copies of Clive Barker's Weaveworld and Books of Blood. I'm guessing I will have to go with Weaveworld 1st/ although I have read the sucker at least a half dozen times by now.

I almost put it down at one point when some library books came in, but I knew if I put it down, I'd never pick it up again and finish. Well not never, but not for a long time. I do think I will read "N" again periodically (my wife liked that one too), but otherwise, that book is quasi-permanently shelved.

I just finished reading "The Fine Line" by Kary Oberbrunner. The sub-title is"Re-envisioning the Gap Between Christ and Culture." It is an awesome
book that has really opened my eyes about being a Christian. This book has taught me a lot. It helps me deal with the constant struggle with being in the world but not of it. (There is a very fine line between in the world and of the world! Believe Me, I know.)
