If you're gonna' read Straub at some point his earlier stuff is best IMO. Try, Ghost Story, Floating Dragon, Julia, Shadowlands, or If You Could See Me Now. Or if you prefer short stories Houses Without Doors is good.

Good call!
Floating Dragon is a good one, and Shadowlands is one I reread every so often. Straub's early work is much more appealing to me than his most recent stuff.
Give one or all a try!

Erm.... Yes and no.

The Hobbit was written before The Lord of the Rings, so technically it's not a prequel, more of a "prelude." A prequel indicates that the story set earlier was written later.

However, The Hobbit was revised (especially in Chapter 5) after The Lord of the Rings was written, so at least in that case, I suppose it effectively became a prequel (of sorts), and that's the only version you can find nowadays....

Good point J&Y. Additionally, it wasn't intended to be a prelude to anything. Tolkien wrote LotR because of the response to The Hobbit. There was a call for "more stories about Hobbits" and from that, he developed LotR. Ultimately, that's what I love about The Hobbit. It is a great piece of the whole Tolkien story cycle, but it also works perfectly as a stand-alone story. I fell in love with that book when I was a kid, and re-read it annually [usually in September around Bilbo's birthday]

I don't agree with Allhail (but what's new) about Talisman and Black house being cannon. They're good books, but aside from the territories being somewhat related to other Earths in the DT series, there's really nothing in common. You do NOT need the Jack Sawyer books to get the full picture, although, they do complement the books, like any other SK books will.

Wuducynn
05-09-2008, 02:05 PM
Hi fuck face! Yeah you Bruno! I never said you had to read them to get a full picture of the DT series. I said Black House will give you background to certain events within the DT series. I definitely agree the style of BH is different, particularly in the beginning. It's not unusual that this would be the case since it is the work of two authors, as opposed to one. I think the best example I can give is the "birds' eye view" description in the 1st chapter. I never really liked that device, and attributed it to Straub because it is different than any way I've ever experienced King setting a scene. Once the story really gets rolling I felt it began to feel more like King. Also, aside from the two books with King, I have never read any Straub so I don't know his voice too well.

Bought The Reapers John Connolly latest novel yesterday and just finished it this morning. A very fast read and totally brilliant. If anybody who's read JC previous books might like to know this is mainly a Louis and Angel story with Charlie Parker appearing near the end of the story. There's a lot about Louis childhood in this and how he ended up the way he is. Oh and there's usual mayhem and killing too.

I really dont' know why I'm having such a hardtime getting through it, it has everything I look for in a book of this sort - magic, interdimensional travel, British accents in my head etc. Perhaps it's all in the presentation? I don't know, I just can't get into it..

I started at the beginning of the series, Magician's Nephew.

John Blaze
05-12-2008, 03:30 PM
that's not the beginning. Oh, technically it is, but only because it's a prequel. Honestly it's the shittiest book in the series, and if you're wading thru that I can understand why you're not enjoying them. Read them in Chronological order, it's much better that way

Reading Gump, Spangle, and Winds of War, again.

Wuducynn

Magician's Nephew is the best book in the series next to Lion the Witch and Wardrobe. Problem is, its best read in publication order not in the order they sell it now.

This is the publication order - 1. The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe; 2. Prince Caspian; 3. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader; 4. The Silver Chair; 5. The Horse and His Boy; 6. The Magician's Nephew; 7. The Last Battle

I promise you, try reading it that way it might be better for you. Then again you may just not like it.

I've only read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (after seeing the recent movie).

I was aware of what it was, but that never bothered me. I didn't feel like I was being force-fed propaganda at all--I just found it an entertaining story, and actually enjoyed seeing the parallels when I knew what they were.

Anyway, it's not like the Gospels themselves are all that original. ;)

I never really thought the religious stuff is that forcefed, and as for the rascism in The Last Battle, I tend to think it's exagerrated. And I'm one who's always ready to cry foul on any type of even perceived rascism. But even at the end where Aslan tells the young soldier that he's still a good person, why would he have done that, if he were so rascist?

To be honest, Stephen King is the first "adult" author I've really read....

EDIT: And Dr. Seuss was a GENIUS, if you want to know....

Its awesome you're starting out with the best of his work too, the DT Series. :harrier: By the way, where are you in that? And yes he was.

Dr. Suess is awesome. I will always love Green Eggs and Ham...Sam I am.

Because of that book my whole family had to eat green eggs and ham on my birthday one year. They were not amused, but I was delighted.

I've always wanted to have that. Just green dye right?

Yes1 It was tradition in my family that on your birthday you could have any meal you wanted, so since this was my favorite book (it went everywhere with me) we had green eggs and ham. Everyone else looked like they wanted to vomit.

I've just finished Part One of The Dark Tower VII: The Dark Tower. And you're right--this is my favorite of his works, and I've now read a lot of his other works, so that counts for a lot.

Holy shit my man! You just about blew through that bad-boy! And thats no small book either! :o

Not to mention I've been reading the other books AT THE SAME TIME (meaning between Dark Tower volumes).... :) Which goes to prove how good it is.

In other news, I believe I've solved the riddle of Maerlyn's Grapefruit (wish razz was on so I could confirm it)....

Another series I love that is more late tweens early teens oriented like Harry Potter is, is The Dark is Rising Sequence. Wonderful, wonderful books, I grew up reading them along with the Narnia series, and I still love them.

Never heard of them. What are they about?

I have indeed, and while it's not my favorite (not even among non-Dark Tower books), it definitely had a lot going for it. :)

Thats kind of like asking what the Dark Tower series is about...let me see. Hmmmmmm...explaining it does them no justice, just like trying to explain the Dark Tower series would do it no justice. Its better just to dive in and buy the first two and read them. Its a cosmological tale involving two families that are connected in a mystical way in England. Blah blah blah...words fall flat.

We've also got one of his other ones...something about Jesus and pork chops. I'll save that one for when a different book *ahem*...Hunchback *cough* bores me to tears with tangent chapters.

Thanks for the advice meng, I think I'll try that.

I finally get free time to read again, YEAH. I was in a tie up between 'Black House' and 'His Dark Materials', since I had a copy of His Dark Materials it won by default. In addition less funner books include a book on Differential Geometry and one on Geodesic Topology.
