Just got home from the appointment I had
with my new allergist, and as I was at the
chemist's collecting the new drugs for my
hives, I saw Joe Hills Heart Shaped Box.
I bought it on the spot (paperback) and
am 40 some-odd pages in...and I'm liking
it very much, it has a good pace to it.
Something tells me it wont be the last
book I ever buy with his name on it.

It's out in paperback? I need to pick that up!

They do work well as individual books. Glad you enjoyed the first one. I love doing my re-reads of it on audiobook [read by Douglas Adams].

By the way, if you like Douglas Adams, you might want to check out John Swartzwelder. He has been a writer for the Simpsons since day one [in fact, he's written more episodes than anyone]. I've read a couple of his novels and I think they are stylistically a lot like Adams' [intelligent and hilarious].

Dags - you were right about Coraline, I loved it.

Just finished Lord of the Flies and its amazing how many comparisons you can draw between its characters and Stephen King's characters.
I tried reading it when I was younger and couldn't get into it. Like Ted Brautigan (and by that rote SK, himself) my Dad is of the opinion that its one of the best books ever. Why is that?

I have a lot of trouble reading anything fiction in Spanish. I either can't seem to concentrate and/or grasp everything that's going on, or the stories simply don't interest me.

I like to read more on spanish, I concentrate more. But for example, I use to read a lot on english too. Last month I bought, and read LOVE IN THE TIMES OF CHOLERA on english.
Of Course I bought it 'cause was cheaper than on spanish

Same reason books written in American English are cheaper than those written in the Queen's English. We removed all the redundant u's in words like colour, and humour.

Started The Dark Glory War by Michael A. Stackpole. Thus far it seems to be a typical "young men coming of age stumble onto a plot to enslave the world" type of fantasy, but it's interesting enough, so I'll keep reading.

Quoted for true.

Did you have a specific book in mind, Jean?

The Aleph, or Fictions.
Borges never wrote a novel, but he wrote a lot of wonderful tales.

Jean

Feverish: no, not a specific book, but about a hundred of different stories and essays; I believe they all come from different collection. I would advise you to find a "Selected Stories", and leaf through it.

i finished Duma Key less than twenty-four hours after having started it, it's that good. I was working and there's about 8 hours sleep in the middle of it, but I pretty much couldn't do anything until I finished it. It was awesome, this is the King I love. and Fuck Cell, too.

I've been looking for this short story for a long time, but don't know who wrote it, or the title. I thought it might be Stephen Crane, but I went through his works and couldn't find it. It's about a boy who gets into an argument with his father, who's confederate, and joins the Union. Much later, while on sentry duty, his camp is discovered by a soldier, whom he has to then kill for the safety of regiment. Then it's discovered the soldier is his father.

Batman's too old to be a superhero--by which I mean he was created too early. In his time, even Superman was still a "comic book character," not a "superhero."

Matter by Iain M Banks, another brilliant book in the Culture series.

Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay. Its a good fast read with really dark humour but not pushed on the ending. Been watching the TV series and think its far better with the changes they've made to the storyline. Interesting to see how the show ends through.
Also just finished a reread of Everything's Eventual by SK.

Yeah, this turtle does not thing macguyver is a superhero.

Though, Batman has been around a long time, so have X-Men, Superman, Hulk, etc.

I do see your points though, about the guy with gadgets.

First Appearances:
Superman - June 1938
Batman - May 1939
X-Men - Sept 1963
Captain America - march 1941

Black House is REALLY connected to the Dark Tower series, as much as Insomnia. I've known quite a few folk, Jayson "R_of_G" is one of them, that like Black House more than The Talisman, as I do.

hope you enjoy it Jonh_and_Yoko [great name btw]. i enjoyed Talisman a lot, but i like BH even more, not the least of reasons the many tie-ins to the DT series. some of my favorite King characters are in that book. obviously Jack, but also Beezer St. Pierre and Henry Leyden are two of my fav King characters. as matthew mentioned, many of the parts that are supposed to be scary parts are actually scary, something that i rarely find to be the case in other than a "creepy scary" way. this one has both the creepy and the terrifying kinds. great for re-reads too i have found.

John_and_Yoko

Can you define the difference between "terrifying" scary and "creepy" scary?

jayson
04-27-2008, 12:41 PM
creepy is stuff that is just creepy. if it were happening to you it wouldn't necessarily scare you so much as it would just creep you out [like a shitload of bugs that couldn't harm you for example]. extremely unpleasant but not particularly threatenning. the other kind of scary i meant would be that which if it were happening to you would literally scare you because it could do you serious harm.

I just mentioned that after Black House I was going into Song of Susannah, and I thought that implied that I hadn't read the latter yet (or the last volume).

But yeah, I'm sure I will find out, and I want to. :)

don't mind CK, he's got no manners. :P

Honestly, the best thing I liked about Black House was that it was a continuance of Jack Sawyer's life.

And I was so glad when that bird drove that chic into madness, I just wish the bird had eaten Jack's eyes out of his head for breakfast

Was there a bird in that story?

The first 200 or so pages is all the bird.

No, no recollection of any bird. I sorta remember a pterodactyl though. Or was that a different book?

I haven't seen anything like that in Black House, and I'm over halfway through it now....

I think you're thinking of something else....

On the upside, the book seems to be picking up now (finally). I don't want to jinx it, as I've just finished Chapter 17, but I finally think I know where it's going....

Lately I've picked up the Sandman Library again, and I can tell you that after finally ordering the last few books I needed, it is awesome to read the series without having to borrow book copies from anybody

Oh wow....

I just finished Chapter 21 of Black House, and I have to say....

I have NEVER so thoroughly changed my mind about a book (certainly a Stephen King book) in my recollection. It used to be a chore just to get a single chapter read, but now I don't want to put it down! :D

I still think it's a shame that the first half of the book was so boring, but at least it's going somewhere now....

Unfound both Black House and Insomnia are the most closely connected to the Dark Tower Saga of all of King's books, also Low Men in Yellow Coats too. They really bring some insights into the series and are just great as stand-alone books. Like Monte said Insomnia does start slow, so be prepared for that.

I don't know what anyone's talking about, with Insomnia--I got into it FAST!

Black House took over half the book to pick up, that I saw, but Insomnia--I went into that expecting NOT to like it (at least at first) and being wrong.

Must be just that subjective, I guess, then, huh?

EDIT: As for Peter Straub, I haven't read anything of his that wasn't co-written with Stephen King, so I hate to prejudge him as an author--unfortunately, though, the low points in the Stephen King books I've been reading so far have mostly been in The Talisman and Black House, so it's hard not to....

Peter Straub is a great author. Not to everyone's taste, sure, but you might well enjoy some of his work. You're right to avoid developing a bias, if you can, before giving some a try.

Of course, I may just have a different view of things than you do: I was into Black House from the very start. (I'm mad about linguistics & I'd already read about Albert Fish.)

Brice

Black House took me a little longer than The Talisman to get into the first time I read it. I'm not reallt sure why.

I agree Path, Straub is great.

I hated both Insomnia and Black House on my first read. Black House was especially disappointing, since I LOVED The Talisman so much.

I am going to reread both this year. We'll see if I change my opinion. :orely:

Yeah, I don't want to boycott an author just because what little I know of him doesn't impress me much. I won't buy out my local bookstore's whole selection of him and force myself to read each one, but if I see something of his that looks like it might be my thing, I can try it out, see what I think. As I said before, it's subjective--what some love, others don't, and vice versa.

I've been wanting to reread The Dark Tower series at some point (probably next year at the soonest), but now I'm thinking of possibly also rereading Insomnia, "Low Men in Yellow Coats," and Black House at the same time, just to see if my opinion of them changes with time (and to refresh my memory of everything, as well as pick up on things I might be missing this first time, since I don't know everything about it yet).

Just something to think about, especially since I don't reread whole novels as a rule (though I'm thinking of rereading The Shining at some point).

I read Straub's Lost Boy Lost Girl not too long ago, and let's just say I was less than impressed.

Not a bad story, but totally predictable, IMHO. Trust me, if I can figure it out, the plot's too easy.

Yeah, as I said, I haven't read anything of his that he didn't co-write with Stephen King, but I did read about some motifs that he keeps bringing back, which sound an awful lot like Black House to me....

They may be all right as stories, but I don't want to keep reading the same story over and over with different names....

Brice
05-04-2008, 09:35 PM
If you're gonna' read Straub at some point his earlier stuff is best IMO. Try, Ghost Story, Floating Dragon, Julia, Shadowlands, or If You Could See Me Now. Or if you prefer short stories Houses Without Doors is good.

Daghain

I've heard Ghost Story was good. I'm not sold yet, however. He seems very John Saul-ish to me - too easy to figure out.

But, for mindless entertainment, I'd go there.
