I don't mind Kubrick winning here even though I voted for Del Toro... Kubrick definitely is one of the greatest American directors

:nope: Fixed that for you. ;)

I'm voting Kubrick, but wouldn't mind Del Toro winning. Both are...or in the case of Kubrick were great at what they do/did.

no way, Brice. If I say "greatest directors", omitting the "American" part, Kubrick won't even make top 30

ETA: tie at 8...

Brice
09-29-2010, 05:48 AM
Surely he could make top 50 though.

Jean

I don't know yet. I think I got to make up such a list, to see who fits where.

fernandito
09-29-2010, 07:20 AM
American or no, Kubrick could easily make any top 10 list.

Well, except Jean's of course :P

I agree. I voted Del Toro because of Pan's Labyrinth and The Devil's Backbone, but it was a hard decision.

Yes, Seymour, you should be very ashamed of yourself for turning this into a tie!

Tied. You've gotta be shitting me. Where are all the Kubrick (ie, cinema) fans?

This is incredible.
Del Toro has made some fun movies, but many of Kubrick's are pure genius.

For me, both main Del Toro movies are pure genius.

turtlex
10-07-2010, 06:07 AM
How many of Kubrick's films do you consider genius as well, Jean?

Jean
10-07-2010, 06:13 AM
Actually, none. They don't really appeal to me, and I use the word "genius" sparingly. I still think that he is a very, very good, very talented director, but none of his movies has ever become part of my own ursine universe, or my furry soul.

fernandito
10-07-2010, 07:22 AM
The only Del Toro movie I'd maybe consider as genius is Pan's Labyrinth. His other films, while still very good, aren't a top-tier level.

Jean
10-07-2010, 08:02 AM
my personal everything is The Devil's Backbone.

(which reminds me - I still owe Lady Linda a review on this)

:o Who did that?

DoctorDodge
10-08-2010, 01:33 PM
Ah well. Del Toro got much more votes than I thought he would, at least.

And the Devil's Backbone is definitely a film I really want to see. I love the style Del Toro uses in his work. Even his "blockbuster" films Hellboy have something rather unique and wonderfully visual about them - I think the forest god in HB2 is beautiful to look at. A lot of films use special effects these days, but there are few that look as gorgeous to look at as what I've seen in Del Toro's films.
