So I thought I'd share my meager collection. I've only been collecting for about 10 months now, so I think I am off to a good start. The first case are all of my first editions (except for the bottom right shelf - just reprints and book clubs for now) and the other shelves are my s/l and gift editions. I have learned and continue to learn so much from the members on this board. I can't thank everyone enough. I look forward to more new acquisitions in the near future, although if I don't slow down, my wife will kill me.

Your wife will most likely be like my husband. She will bitch and bitch like my husband. My husband has gotten so mad at me for buying books that he has slept on the couch for a few nights.

I'm hoping that she won't mind too much. I work from home, so I'm home all day doing my job plus caring for the house and our kids. It is the only hobby I have, so hopefully she'll cut me some slack.

My biggest obstacle is going to be spending a large sum of money on one book. I have been trying to start with the less expensive books, but once I have them, I don't know how I'm going to bring myself to spend $1000 or more for a book. I just can't wrap my head around that.

Im just restarting my collection again after a burglary wiped out what I once had. Starting slow, but I have been able to find first editions on Misery and Tommyknockers. Then a friend blew me away with a gift addition to my collection, a 1st ed Gunslinger, singed!! It belonged to her father who passed away several years ago. She thought about selling it but thought he would want it passed on to someone as passionate about it as he was. There were a few books in the collection, all signed, as well as a picture of her father and King leaning against Christine drinking beers, also singed. They are all amazing. Ill post some pics soon.

I have never spent $1000 or more on a book. I mostly stick with the $75 gift editions. The gift editions have the same thing as the more expensive books, they just don't have the signatures. The most I ever spent on a book is $295 and that was Knowing Darkness.

You were robbed and all your book collection got stolen. That is awful. This sounds like my worst nightmare! May I ask what was in your collection and what types of books were stolen?

Nice collection indeed!
I'm confused (as usual) about the UK BAG OF BONES S/L. How does it differ from the trade edition? And what is the UK BAG OF BONES 1 of 2000 numbered? How many UK editions are there? And are any actually signed by King or are they facsimile signatures? I really don't care much if King actually signed the books or not, but I just want to get my facts about this edition straight.

And what is the green boxed set next to the limited INSOMNIA? Is that the Sub Press GREEN MILE SET?

ELazansky
11-03-2010, 02:17 PM
The UK Bag of Bones is just a regular H&S 1st trade edition. It has 2000 signed and numbered bookplates, not facsimilies. So it is really just a regular book with a signed plate in it. Definitely not the most exciting of signed King books, but it was cheap, so I bought it.

And the green box is the Gift Edition of the Green Mile set from Sub Press

I just read your other post about BAG OF BONES on The Collector's site. I recently ordered it under the mistaken assumption it was one of the boxed UK limited editions. Oh well, I wanted it anyway, but probably would have waited if I had done some research on it.

20th Century Ghosts is my favorite. His short story writing is fantastic. Pop Art is my favorite story in the book. Some of his chapbooks are included in 20thCG (Voluntary Committal and Better than Home). HSB and Horns are good, but I love short stories.

2) The Shape Under the Sheet - I remember having this once before, but I don't remember it looking like this. This one has no DJ, and the seller said it was limited to 3000 copies and was printed before the regular edition with the DJ. Anyone have any more info on this? It is still sealed in the original wrap.

My notes also list this as part of a 3000 copy edition. There was also a signed/limited edition of 350 copies published by The Overlook Connection in slipcase without dust jacket. Not sure which was the "true" first edition. I've also got a large trade paperback edition published by Contemporary Books. None of my copies have dust jackets.

I like that Stephen King Encyclopedia. If you read it, please let us know what you think about it! I hate shrink wrap too, but I can rarely get myself to take it off. I prefer when books aren't shrink-wrapped so I don't have to give myself a headache trying to decide whether to remove it or not. My earliest King still in shrinkwrap is the signed & numbered WIZARD AND GLASS. Laugh at me if you will, I deserve it!

Because people can find way of having books shrinkwrapped again when they want to resell them, the shrinkwrap concept on eBay holds no allure anymore.

I had "read" the encyclopedia when it first came out. I thought it was very well put together. I think I donated my original copy to charity many years ago, when I got tired of moving my books with me every time I had to move. I did open this book, and the copyright page does states First Edition, First Printing of 3000 copies.

No secrets here :-) I paid $145.00 for it. It is in great condition. The gilt lettering on the spine is complete, no spine lean, and the jacket I think has one tiny closed tear. If it weren't for the browning on the page edges, it would look like it just came off the shelf. I was thrilled to pick this one up.

Nice stuff. Who is Jack Ketchum really? Is that a pseudonym? Does anyone know, or is that a dumb question?

Not a dumb question at all. Dallas Mayr is Jack's real name.

Very nice, Eric!
I've got the Gauntlet book as well, and really like it.
There are about 30 signatures, from the likes of King, Bentley Little, Rex Miller, Piers Anthony and Karl Wagner.

And, i don't really know why, but I've always had a soft spot for that UK Wizard and Glass, even though it's a rather plain production.

Thanks, all. My collection certainly has grown since I took that picture over a year ago. Had to move some of the books off to different shelves for now. Here's what it looks like now:

SHELF 1 - Joe Hill S/L books, The Regulators S/L, and Justin Cronin S/L
SHELF 2 - Neil Gaiman S/L
SHELF 3 - DT Grant 1st and Artist Editions (except that lowly 3rd of The Gunslinger. Have to fix that soon)
SHELF 4 and 5 - King S/L's, my remarqued Duma Key, and a few other Gift Editions

http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa411/ELazansky/Books/Books1.jpg

These two shelves have other Gift Editions and various books

A few new non-SK books, which probably won't mean anything if you don't follow baseball. (My apologies to Merlin, as I'm sure the thought of non-Yankee collectibles will make him ill :wtf:)

Bums - one of the two best books with the history of the Brooklyn Dodgers. S/l to 400 copies signed by the author and HOF'er Duke Snider:

http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa411/ELazansky/Books/Bums.jpg
http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa411/ELazansky/Books/Bums-LimPage.jpg

The Boys of Summer - this is the other best history book. Came with a copy of Eight Men Out. Both are non-numbered but signed on the FFEP by each author:

http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa411/ELazansky/Books/TheBoysofSummer.jpg

The Duke of Flatbush - this one I'm not sure of all the details. I had never seen another copy of this book anywhere, so I had to buy it. The limitation page has it numbered to 1000, and it is signed by Duke Snider and Bill Gilbert (the authors) on the title page. Just not sure if the sigs are part of the edition or if they were obtained afterwards. Either way I'm happy to have it:

LOL Actually Eric, my Dad was a big Brooklyn Dodger fan. Because he's my Dad (misguided as he may be) I bought him the front page of the Daily News from 1955 with the "Who's a Bum" Gallo caricature. I had it framed for him and he loves it!!!!

My dad grew up in Brooklyn. I loved hearing all of the old stories of how the players would actually walk to and from the games with the fans. The players were so approachable back then. It sounded like such a simpler time. Too bad sports aren't like that anymore.

I thought I'd share some of my other non-SK and non-Neil Gaiman books. Always fun to look at books....

A Feast for Crows by George R.R. Martin (S/L) - I started reading A Game of Thrones after watching the mini-series on HBO. It was great, and so is the book so far. I have a lot of reading to do to catch up. You can't find the Sub Press S/L copies anywhere, but I was able to find this Voyager Press edition cheap:

http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa411/ELazansky/Books/AFeastforCrows.jpg

Washington's Crossing by David Hackett Fischer (S/L) - one of my favorite history books.

http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa411/ELazansky/Books/WashingtonsCrossing.jpg

Dragonflight by Anne McCaffrey - The Dragonriders of Pern is one of my favorite fantasy series. This is the 30th anniversary edition of Dragonflight. It is numbered, and was then signed by the author at a book signing celebrating the release:

http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa411/ELazansky/Books/Dragonflight.jpg

Unnatural Exposure by Patricia Cornwell (S/L) - I loved the Kay Scarpetta books when they first came out. Then the series got boring. The last few have been better. I guess you can only write so many novels with the same characters:

http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa411/ELazansky/Books/UnnaturalExposure.jpg

The Teeth of the Tiger by Tom Clancy (S/L) - I don't even read Clancy, but I found this edition for $29, so I had to buy it. I've seen it listed online for $200-$300:

I was fortunate enough to get AFFC from Sub Press, so I can get ADoD and then their new upcoming releases of AGoT and ACoK. Gonna have a big hole in the set since I will never be able to find the matching number of the ASoS that has already been issued....sigh

So true! I don't collect S/L editions but it would surprise me if I don't get a couple eventually. And Christine is very high on my potential-want-list (as are EOTD and Firestarter).

It has been forever since I updated my Collection thread, so here goes...this is mostly everything. Doesn't include my comics stuff or some other assorted items like my signed books.

If some of the pics look weird, I took one pic of each shelf. SO there is some overlap and some distorted views...not my best photo effort.

Let's see...what am I reading lately...

Kill or Be Killed
Uncanny
Vision
Black Magick

waiting on the new trades for Thief of Thieves, Invincible, The Walking Dead, Outcast and Lazarus

I did buy most of Brubaker's run on Captain America. He's awesome

And I started reading Morrison's Animal Man and Moore's Saga of the Swamp Thing. Never read them when I was younger.
