Oh well, if you're gonna include direct-to-dvd movies candy, I might as well amend my selection for Day 08 to include the obvious:

Doctor Who - The TV Movie

Come on, you were all expecting it at one point or another! McGann's too good to watch just the once! Still, it would be nicer if he had starred in a Time War trilogy, beginning with story "No Regrets" in which Susan gets killed by the Daleks and the Doctor finally joins the Time Lords in their war, before leading to finale "The Moment" (working title) in which the Doctor wipes out both the Daleks and his own race in a huge mega-fucking-awesome explosion, leaving him mortally wounded and ends with Paul McGann giving this really dramatic monologue about how he wants to die, before crying out in pain as he regenerates into Christopher Eccleston. Shame we'll never see anything as cool as that, but I'll just settle with how fucking spectacular the series is now anyway!

People still watch these? I gave up after how bloody awful the 4th movie was. It was seriously one of the worst movies I've ever seen in theatres. It was so bad it literally cheapened the first 3...though not the original as much.

As for A Christmas Story...I cannot stand that movie. I just, don't get it. If I'm going to watch a Christmas movie, make it Bad Santa with Billy Bob Thorton.

DoctorDodge
09-08-2010, 06:34 PM
I haven't seen Saw 4 yet Mattrick, and currently I don't have any reason to. I liked the first 3 films enough, but with how 3 ended, I thought it felt like the logical way to end the series. Since...you know...he's dead. How much more story could you drag out of that?!?

On the other hand, I did always enjoy the logic of the traps used in the series. I really don't like torture films, but I put up with it in Saw because of the neat little twists and the fact that the films had a plot. I do like my films to have something of a plot, even the ones designed purely for thrills and entertainment.

Mattrick
09-08-2010, 06:44 PM
The 4th movie has no plot and the traps are unimaginitive and awful. They effectively find a way to have successfully killed off EVERY character from the first 3 movies, leaving us with a 'who the fuck cares...who the fuck is this guy' twist at the end. As much as I felt 2 and 3 were entertaining the original was the only good one. Not to mention they kind of ruined the entire point of these games with Det. Matthews and how they handled him. I didn't even want to see Saw 4, but my dad was all 'lets go see it I'll pay'. I think I would rather watch Pirates of the Carribean 3 again before Saw 4, 5 or 6.

DoctorDodge

Yep, I would say number 1 gets the award for Best Plot of the Franchise. Also, there wasn't as much focus on the gore as the other films I saw. It rarely lingered on the nastier aspects, just showing quick cuts (pun unintended) and left it to the imagination. It just mainly focused on having a good enough story to justify the gore, now the need for shocks have outweighed the need for a good plot.

The BBC drama series Messiah suffered a hugely similar problem. The first mini-series was amazing: anyone who likes a great gripping thriller, watch it, it's one of the best I've ever seen. Nasty deaths (never seen unfortunatly for gore fans) that had a logic to them, great story that was full of twists and turns, and a killer that made sense. Not to mention one of my favourite twists in a drama series ever.

The other series? 2 was ok but didn't have half the cleverness of the original, 3 was awful, I could guess who the killer was from the first ten minutes of it, 4 had a good premise but I just couldn't care less about it, tbh, and the last one they did was just a copy of the first one, but with a completely different cast. A shame, as I really enjoyed the first one and thought it had a really great plot, but all the others? There was still plot, but it just got less and less interesting as it went on.

Rebel Without a Cause

This was the toughest yet. I have way too many favorites that it was hard to narrow it down to one.

 Fair enough! If there was a dalek smilie on here, i'd so use it because I could, too!

To be honest though, I don't think I've watched nearly enough "classic" films yet. (Including, shockingly, Casablanca!) And it's difficult to truly define a "classic" anyway. But IAWL is certainly one that has truly earned classic status!

To be honest...I've never seen Casablanca or Gone with the Wind....:ninja:
But I have seen It's a Wonderful Life, The Price and Me, The King and I, Citizen Kane...so I'm too deprived, I think.

I tend to gravitate towards really quirky, small films. And musicals. Lots of musicals.

DoctorDodge

I think I tend to gravitate to those kind of films too really. Except musicals, although rock opera Repo! is an obvious exception in that case. Love that film. But yes, films that are a little bit different from the usual such as Brick and (500) Days of Summer I always enjoy and keep an out for (and show that Joseph Gordon Levitt is usually the guarantee of a good, quirky film).

Also, British films. Ones that capture the spirit of it like no other. Quadrophenia and This Is England are the best examples of this. Watched both last week, can't get enough of either!

You know Repo! the Genetic Opera!

:huglove: Really...I think we might be soul mates :nana:
(BTW : http://www.thescifiworld.net/smilies_doctorwho.htm :excited:)
I will have to add those two to my (steadily growing out of control) list. I love me a good British film.

Dalek smilies...? To quote Donna Noble, "I bloody love you!!!" :excited:

Oh, I'm so gonna be using these on a regular basis!

Oh, and if you love great British films, you can't go wrong with Quadrophenia and This Is England. Absolutely fantastic films!

DoctorDodge

Absolutely! Changing my theme back to Doctor Who is one thing, changing it to the greatest thumbs up moment ever and then finding a smilie to match is just sheer geeky bliss! :D

Kinda like when I found the 11th Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver at my local comic book store yesterday....you have no idea how close I was to buying it! I don't even know what it does, as far as the toy goes, but it looks really cool! Just gotta wait two more months for my birthday, then I can coerce a friend into buying it for me :P

DoctorDodge

It has spring loaded action so it opens up, and lights up with the sound, too! I should know, as I got one myself when I saw The Eleventh Hour on a big screen down a pub in London!

But what I'm really looking for is the Sonic Screwdriver Wii remote! I can't wait for that! Then I can have double the fun when the Doctor Who game for the Wii comes out! :excited:

Nice! Well I still want it :) Now, just to get that, the Dalek model, and the spinning Tardis...then I will have a whole desk display!

Too bad I don't have a Wii, though! I would so get that. I mean, the screwdriver paired with the lightsaber attachments you can get with it...I'd be the coolest kid on my floor

Well, just go to a scifi convention in cosplay! You'll easily be the coolest kid then! I went to a convention with one of my best mates a couple of years back. Not in costume, sadly - first time i met her parents, and wanted to make a reasonable first impression, at least - but still awesome to be there. Especially when I got a sketch by an artist from one of my favourite comics 2000AD! Based on a 2000AD Rogue Trooper t-shirt I wore! That was one of the most awesome days of my life! The other was when I went to a Dr Who exhibition in London and got my pic next to a cyberman costume! Nerdiest things I've ever done, and proud of it!

I wish I could Jean, especially since you watched and enjoyed both films I recommended, but I've still got sod all money. That's sod all money to buy, rent or watch anything online without my shitty computer catching a virus. However, consider Casablanca moved to the top of my list of "Films I have to watch", which currently also includes "A History of Violence." I think that's on telly tonight, actually!

This Is England. Easily changed the way I thought about what skinheads are like and why they'd want to be skinheads.
