The Coen Brothers.

Cameron is amongst the best filmmakers of all time and easily the best action director of all time. But Eastwood is so fantastic in his simplicity I just love him as a director.

Abrams is in here? Really? Star Trek was alright but really?

Although Cameron directed one of my all time favorite movies, the Coen brothers are much more consistent so I gave my vote to them.

I wish I hadn't bought it before I'd seen it. Not that it was terrible but it wasn't amazing either. There are hundreds of directors more deserving to be in this contents than Abrams...like was Cameron Crowe even in it?

...There are hundreds of directors more deserving to be in this contents than Abrams...Oh, I totally agree with you there!

Abrams is in here? Really? Star Trek was alright but really?Define "alright." :P

... Not that it was terrible but it wasn't amazing either. ...Me, tho, I did think that it was terrible... but I just might agree to call it "alright" -- because it could have been more terrible.
Although Cameron directed one of my all time favorite movies, the Coen brothers are much more consistent so I gave my vote to them.Precisely. That's plain. Dunno how you skipped right over Eastwood, though!:arg:

Oh there's no question that Eastwood is a top tier director, but the CB's films have always held a special fascination for me. The Big Lebowski, Fargo, No Country For Old Men - all part of a very well rounded filmography.

Wait a second! Cameron only has one vote! I went with Eastwood just because I thought that Cameron would already be running away with it.

Cameron, and I think that The Abyss is a glaring omission from his filmography. Cameron has always been incredibly innovative with special effects, and has been the first to use many techniques. (The water in the abyss, the liquid metal in T2, Avatar....really?)

Path - what are your thoughts on Nolan ?

pathoftheturtle
08-09-2010, 09:40 AM
On Nolan, I think that putting him in with this group so that the Coens could knock out Ridley Scott was a good idea...
oh, wait! ><

fernandito

Wait, why the hell did I post that in here instead of the group Nolan is in !?

My bad, it seems I have a case of the Mondays

Ehn, I's just giving you a hard time. I figured it was because I hadn't posted yet in that thread. Have now done so... and thanks for asking. :)

I can't believe Cameron is behind Eastwood and the Coens. Personal opinion, but I think both Eastwood and the Coens are over-rated, especially Eastwood.

Not surprising (considering your views on Tarantino), but your likely in the minority again.

Also

The Abyss won the 1990 Oscar for Best Visual Effects. It was also nominated for Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Best Cinematography and Best Sound. The studio lobbied hard to get Michael Biehn nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.[citation needed]

The Abyss was nominated for many other awards, such as by Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films and the American Society of Cinematographers. It ended up winning a total of three other awards from these organizations.

Visual Effects is normally what hopelessly ruins a movie for me...

I consider that a matter of personal preference, and not a reflection of directing talent.

I cant fucking stand romantic comedy, as a genre, but that doesnt mean that the director of any particular title from that genre is untalented.

Blasphemy! lol

I think Eastwood is fantastic because his directing skills are utterly simplistic. Look at say, Mystic River. There is no fancy camera work, every shot is very simple yet meticulously placed. Eastwood makes up for his lack of intense visuals with his amazing ability to bring out the best in his actors. There is a reason why so many of the movies he directs wins acting awards or nominations at oscars. He truly understands the source material and how to convey it to actors which is a quality many modern day directors do not have.

Why, of course. I mean, if a visual effect works for the story, emphasizes the message, enhances the understanding of the characters, provides a metaphor etc., I am all for it; that's why I said "normally".

This one's a really tough group. Eastwood or Cameron. Eastwood's films are dramatic and mesmerizing, while Cameron's are driving and captivating. Very hard choice, but I'm pulled toward Cameron because of Aliens, T2, and The Abyss (though Titanic nearly knocks him out all together).

This was merely meant to illustrate that your tastes seem to differ, at least if these polls are a meaningful reflection, from that of the mainstream public.

......and both Cameron's and Tarantino's works have been very popular.
