I haven't reached season 3 yet, but I'm really eager to, especially after the season 2 finale seriously took things up a notch. Probably start it after my Life on Mars re-watch and when I've finally finished season 17 of Who (shockingly, despite having one of the greatest stories ever with City of Death and Douglas fucking Adams as script editor, it's one of the weakest seasons of the entire series I've ever seen).

The Princess Bride, for the first time in nearly 2 decades. First time I saw it, I thought it was alright, if a little too traditional fairy tale for me. Oddly enough, I'm watching it now, and it's much better than I remembered. Love the sword fights, but even better is the excellent dialogue. I had also forgotten just how charming each of the main characters were. Some really cracking stuff here.

I think it was Family Guy that asked "How come the voice from the future is Bob Saget? Isn't the guy, like, an adult? It's not like he's going to grow up to be Bob Saget!"
I'm not sure they expected that show to last very long... most new programs are not successful. But they have been pretty clever with interweaving storylines over the years.

What I really like about it is how beautifully it gets around censorship at times, usually by reminding us that Ted is, after all, telling this story to his children (even if he still tells them about the number of women he's slept with, including the story of how he may or may not have had a threesome). Particular favourite "alterations" Ted has made: college stories of Ted and Marshall giggling like idiots after "eating a sandwich" and the use of the word "grinch" in one of the christmas eps.

WRN: Doctor Who. No surprise there, but I just wanted to mention that I'm finally on season 20 of the original series. Season fucking Twenty. After over 2 years of starting to watch every episode of the entire original series in order (as opposed from watching random stories in order, as I normally did), I've finally reached another major milestone. Wow. Been an awesome journey so far, and I've still got another 7 seasons to go, including this one. I've watched a lot of shows in my time, but reaching a twentieth season of anything - even Doctor Who - just feels pretty damn awesome, to the incredibly dorky part of me, anyway. (Which, let's be honest, including the studying of accountancy is at least 95%).

Anyway: 575 eps down, 121 to go...

where i am in Doctor who watching wise in order. is Season 16 the Serial ? "The Pirate Planet' but i've been watching it off & on like you in order for oh 3 or 4 years now i think. i'm up to Serial #99 so that's not to bad as i was before that up to i think "The Hand of Fear ? i think ? so i watched more awhile back. anyways, NOT to long ago i started watching the show from episode #1 cause i had bought all of Wiliam Hartnell's Serials on dvd that are out. and now i have all of them cept for the lost in time box sets. i'll get them at some point. anyways,

so ever since than i'm now up to "The War Machines' and i have all the recons so next up The Smuggler's it's i think a terrible serial but i like to what the 60's ones in order. oh i'm on Episode #2 so far. of The War Machines.

DoctorDodge
06-24-2013, 07:49 AM
Oh, I love the Pirate Planet. Simultaneously fun and brilliantly clever. Same goes for City of Death, also written by Douglas Adams. I'm still completely shocked at how poor season 17 was overall though, considering he was script editor for the season. Maybe he's just better at working on his own stories, but he always seemed to get the balance of humour, scifi and even horror just right.

The War Machines is one story that I've enjoyed a lot more in context than on its own. One of the first contemporary invasion stories that the series has become so famous for, the introduction of the brilliant team of Ben and Polly, and even better - Dodo finally leaves, so it's worthy of a "FUCK YEAH!!!" for that alone. ;)

About to start watching the Black Guardian trilogy of season 20, btw. Mawdryn Undead. Nice to have a timey-wimey story in the classic series, for once.

i have only 1 episode of The War Machines Left, than it's onto "The Smugglers' well the recon of it anyways. even though i hate that serial cause it bores me to fucking death. and yes i could skip it. but the way i am is when i start the 60's era. since all the stories combine in some form, hence episodes running into another. i find it hard to skip serials even the ones i hate. with some of the 70's season i'm like that as well. but in most of that era i can pretty much go into any serial i feel like.

i'm also watching a bit of Dark Shadows' i haven't watched any of that in far to long. and yes you got some Classic Who fans on here no doubt! :)

Pretty simplistic premise - on the surface - but so well-executed and exceptionally acted.

Anyone watching "The Bridge"? Only two episodes so far, but I'm hooked. Early to tell, but it just may rate with "Breaking Bad" and "The Wire". Of course the jury is still out in that regard. Yet very promising.

Whoa, whoa whoa. Calm down with that. You just put it up there with two of the best shows of the decade..

I don't think it even comes close to those shows. It's more in line with The Killing for me. I don't love the show, but I think it's pretty good. My biggest problem is that I don't think Diane Kruger is that great of an actress. The only thing I've ever enjoyed her in is Inglorious Basterds.

I'm also getting kind of annoyed with shows that have a protagonist that has some sort of mental or social affliction. Hannibal, Elementary and even Monk going back a ways. There's a bunch more, but I'm blanking now. I know high functioning autism is hot right now, but it's getting kind of annoying.

OK, maybe "The Wire" was over reaching, after all it did have the advantage of being on cable, but so far its a pretty damn good show, IMHO I find the "quirkiness" of Crosby to be refreshing. "Hannibal" was/is "hands down" the weirdest, gore filled show on network TV. I watched the entire season 1 and I am still considering whether I like it or not!! LOL

Beside's, I did say the jury is still out on "The Bridge", but to me it shows tremendous potential, so far!!!

WRN: after pushing through the worst season of Who ever, now starting season 25. And what a story to begin with, one of my all-time favourites: Remembrance of the Daleks. Great action, great characters, great characterisation of the two leads (with the Doctor starting to head into darker territory and a companion feeling like a fully rounded character for the first time in a few years), and some wonderful dialogue (the story features one of my favourite moments ever with the Doctor contemplating the consequences of a decision he has to make over a cup of tea). A solid reminder of why I love watching this show, after the season I've just watched. Shame that, just as the show was starting to become great again, they decided to just cancel it over a year later. :( At least it went out on a high.

Jean

I remember liking Mulholland Drive and Blue Velvet, but I have to re-watch them some time soon before I say something definite. Eraserhead is nice and weird (too symbolic for my taste; bears are suspicious of symbolism in films, but good nevertheless), you might like it; the only film by him I really loved so far is Elephant Man. Lost Highway so far is veeeeeeeery long and, mainly, boring. My main problem with him, as with many arthouse directors, is that he takes himself too seriously. My other problem with him is that - with the only exception of Elephant Man (which totally stands alone) he speaks in riddles, which, as it is usually the case with riddles, on solving prove to be quite superficial. Visually he is awesomely good, anyway.

Could one of the Brits explain why a season consists of three episodes? Is this normal over there? Is the unaired pilot available and/or worth watching?

Actually, no, not even our series are that short usually - usually it's between 6 or 13 eps per series. I think it's because since each episode in Sherlock's case is 90 minutes long each, it probably reduces the length. As for the unaired pilot - no, not at all other than comparison's sake - the first aired episode is pretty much the pilot, but with more plot and more characters.

Btw: excellent choice! If you want another great (but, at 16 eps long, short) British series to watch afterwards, go with Life on Mars. One of the best TV shows ever. And speaking as someone who's seen Sopranos, Breaking Bad and The Wire, I do mean ever!

Life on Mars is a show about a by-the-book cop in modern day (well, 2006) Manchester who, while tracking down a serial killer, gets hit by a car and wakes up in 1973. The story of the show is about two things: first, how Sam adjusts to a way of policing that's less by-the-book and work in a world of sexist, racist, homophobic and all-round offensive cops (chief/best among them is his new boss, Gene Hunt) and how Sam tries to find a way home. Both stories are pretty basic, I will admit, but the way it's executed is brilliant: characters, dialogue, cinematography, music (it's the 1970s and named after a Bowie song, of COURSE the music is awesome) - all brilliant.

It's like David Tennant - love him as an actor, and a great actor, but the amount of raging fangirls he has sometimes makes me forget of why I enjoyed him in Who or Broadchurch in the first place! Hopefully though, BC can be awesome enough as Sherlock for ya to make you forget about his fangirls, and if that doesn't happen, keep this line he once said from one of my favourite British films, Four Lions: "You're an arse man! I knew you were an arse man!"

I so have to watch both that and the UK original. Love political drama, and I've heard plenty of great things about both. Even the Thick of It, as fucking hysterical as it is as a comedy, had plenty of political back stabbings and a nice mix of sympathetic and despicable characters that made me love it. So I'm definitely keen to check out House of Cards eventually.

Now watching: The Sopranos. Chasing It. Loving this episode, as the focus on Tony's gambling problems and how it's impacting his life strongly reminds me of that other awesome fat bastard, Robbie Coltrane as Fitz in Cracker.

I find it to be more of a cliffhanger than a conclusion. There were obviously parts that were meant to be answered in the next season.

So. Sherlock. Three questions.

1. Is there a prohibition against smoking on tv in Britain? I ask because of the nicotine patches. I know we have laws in the US but I don't know if you have similar ones over there.

2. Is it possible the pills were "iocane powder?" As in, they were both poison, but the poisoner had either adapted himself or used them as medication and thus was immune? This occurred to my sister and me separately, so I see it as a valid theory.

3. Wouldn't Cumberbatch be the perfect Voldemort in a remake? He has a snakey look. :P

1. Not to my knowledge. I mentioned Life on Mars earlier, which was broadcast on the same channel at the same time of day, and the amount of smoking and drinking in that would probably be the equivalent of Mad Men. However, there is a heavy overall smoking ban in the UK, as far as smoking in the workplace or even indoors in pubs is concerned, so I think they decided to have Sherlock go with the patches to make it a little more believable. Like he said, it really is borderline impossible to smoke in London these days. He does actually smoke at one point in the series, though.

2. Not a bad theory. It would certainly make the most sense as to how the villain knew what pill was which, since they were both identical - the classic double bluff.

3. You know what, I can see that happening.

I know, right??? I just watched the second episode and spent the entire thing wondering why Cumberbatch wasn't cast as Voldemort instead of Fiennes. I mean, Fiennes was a great Voldemort, but Cumberbatch is physically perfect for the role and probably would have done just as good a job acting-wise. My only real conclusion is that I'm not sure when Cumberbatch came into the public eye, it may have been after GoF.

I'm pretty sure that Sherlock was what's made him as famous as he is now - I saw him in a few roles before, although not as far back as 2005, certainly in nothing huge - but after Sherlock in 2010, he's definitely gotten a lot of attention, getting roles in films like Star Trek and The Hobbit. I think if he had been as famous 10 years ago as he is now, he probably would've gotten the part of Voldemort (I say probably because 10 years ago, he may have been considered as too young for someone like Voldemort).

Btw, for randomness sake: here's a clip of Benedict in one of my favourite films ever, Four Lions, saying "You're a massive arse-man!"

Beneath the Planet of the Apes. First time in years since I last watched this. It's funny how much went over my head since I last watched it as a kid. Not only is there plenty of clear allegory within the film relevant to the time it was made, but there's also surprisingly a lot of fucked up imagery and content in this film.

House of Cards (UK), for the first time. I'm definitely liking it so far. The best political drama is the kind of very, very old school drama - studies of power, betrayal, greed - the kind of themes we got with Richard III or MacBeth. And that seems to be what we're getting so far. Ian Richardson is fantastic to watch. I'm keen to see how the American approach is like.

Been watching a few season 1 eps of Star Trek: The Next Generation in HD the past couple of days. Now, as gorgeous as those effects shots look in HD (never get tired of the Enterprise-D especially, it really is easily my favourite ship in the Trek universe), the show is definitely slowly finding its feet, and Riker without a beard...well...

Mr. CRinVA, do you mean me? Amber and I watch a hell of a lot of television and movies, and although we don't finish every show, we start all of them.

Some shows get canceled, some shows have short seasons, some we save until later --either after the season is done or until we can find time in the rotation for it-- and some we end up deleting after one or two episodes. Like right now, we're watching the following:

Anger Management: Season 2
Big Brother: Season 15
Camp: Season 1
Capture: Season 1
Defiance: Season 1
Family Tools: Season 1
Monday Mornings: Season 1
Rectify: Season 1 - 6 episodes
Siberia: Season 1
Under The Dome: Season 1
Wilfred (2011): Season 3

And we're waiting on these to finish their seasons and/or until we make room for them in our viewing schedule:

Boardwalk Empire: Season 4
Breaking Bad: Season 1
Doctor Who (original series): Season 1
Homeland: Season 3
Low Winter Sun: Season 1
Ray Donovan: Season 1
The Bridge: Season 1
The Newsroom: Season 2
All the rest in my above post.

Finished listening to all the 7th Doctor's audios, which I'm pretty sad about, as I'm now watching his death in Doctor Who: The Movie. After 3 seasons on TV and a TON of audio stories, he's really grown on me, and it was great seeing how his Doctor changed and developed over time, starting out as a bit of a clown before becoming a master chess player who fought with gods and monsters. Shame to reach his end, especially as his death was sadly far from heroic or epic. On the plus side: not only am I moving onto my favourite Doctor ever, but it is 23rd September right now, which means the 50th is exactly 2 months away! PARTY ON!

Watched Shrek the Musical yesterday and absolutely loved it. 5/5. I told Amber about it and she wanted to watch it tonight, so I watched it again and loved it even more. Now, I'm a huge fan of the movie itself, but this goes so much deeper with the music. Every single actor and actress is amazing. I can not talk this up enough. For any fans of the movie, of musicals in general, watch this one now.

Actually pausing my MASSIVE ongoing Who marathon (seriously, in the past 10 days, in my aim to have listen to all the 8th Doctor's stories before re-watching all the new series eps before the 50th, I've listened to over 40 serials so far) to watch the first Agents of SHIELD episode. Pretty cool and enjoyable stuff so far. Love that Whedon's still got his trademark humour ("Sorry, that corner was really dark, and I couldn't resist" was genius), and I love how it's clearly set in the Marvel movie universe, but gives us a very different angle, like the best spin-offs. And the fact that Cobie Smulders is in the pilot is another bonus.

After this, as one epic show begins, another one ends...after 7 years, it's time to say goodbye to The IT Crowd. :(

Vicious : Are you pleading for your life?
Spike : Hardly. Begging doesn't work on you, remember? Even if it's coming from the man who took you in and made you what you are.

So, after MONTHS of not watching Who and instead listening to a ton of it on audio (which were admittedly excellent most of the time, but still: two whole months), I've started to rewatch the new series again. It's been a while since I watched Eccleston's eps. Gotta admit, while the first ep is far from perfect, watching it is still a joy, for both the nostalgia and the reminder of what it felt to have the show BACK.

Pissed about Sherlock? Why?!

Well, admittedly I hate those "everyone turns against the protagonist" stories because I get too emotionally involved and frustrated. I also don't like the "everyone thinks I'm dead but I'm not!" stories because they're 1. unrealistic, and 2. overly dramatic. So, two plot points I'm not a fan of in the same episode. I also really thought Moriarty would stick around, or at least have a more spectacular ending. And hey, maybe I am slightly frustrated that I can't figure out how he lived, but the fall wasn't shown in a continuous shot, so I at least have some theories. Overall, it just rubbed me the wrong way a little.

I still like the show overall, and I'll probably watch the new season.
