View Full Version : The Greatest Director Tournament - Nominations
fernandito
06-28-2010, 11:57 AM
Hi, it's me again. Know what that means ? Another movie related tournament :P
This time we're doing directors. Here's how it's going to work :
There will be a total of 64 nominations. Each person can nominate 1 director per post, and must wait until 3 others have posted until you can submit another name. Once we have all 64 nominations, I will group the directors as best I can and begin the tournament.
The tournament will commence once the Constant Reader Awards has concluded.
Also, please be sure and number your post ! Thank you !

... that will be easier in the long run so we don't get repeats and people won't have to read back to the beginning of the thread. ( hope that's okay, Feev )

I could have added at least ten (or rather twenty) Russian directors I consider greatest of all times, but alas, I understand very well that nobody here knows them. I wonder if I should, if my turn comes again, nominate some more "foreign" ones - the above list has a definite American bias, and it is both unfair and sad. Visconti, Antonioni, Scola, Fellini, Zurlini, anyone? Leluch, Gérard Oury, René Clair - Guillermo del Toro, for God's sake!
Please friends, if I fail to - can someone nominate del Toro?...

This is less at your request Jean, and more being shocked that his name hasn't already been added to this list already. And you're right, there is an American bias, because people are going with what they know. So far, I've mostly added British directors because very few other people have, and there's a few directors I've seen that continually impresses me. If there's a Russian or any other "foreign" director you feel is one of the greatest directors of all time, add him or her to the list, whether people have heard of them or not. On the plus side, even if people haven't heard of them, it'll at least direct attention to them!

Jean - I'm letting people nominate the directors they want and love because I don't want to nominate Andrei Tarkovsky (one of the most brilliant directors of all time, quite possibly the greatest) and have him go up against Tarantino and have it be a landslide of 20 votes to 0 in the latter's favor, there's no fun in that. If we wanted a list to truly reflect the greatest, I'd just google a list of the best directors and save everyone the trouble, but that's not what this tournament is about. And the list is prevalently American directors, but there are plenty of foreign directors on that list as well.

Turtle, I'm taking Capra off the list. Somebody already nominated him. Also, I love foreign films, but they are just harder to get my hands on than the American films of which I've grown up with. By all means, if you think a foreign director is deserving, nominate him/her. I for one still see many other great American directors who have yet to be mentioned. For example, Sidney Lumet.

Yes ! A wonderful mesh of classic and contemporary directors, and so many different genres - ah I love it ! That's why I love hosting these kind of tournaments
And with Mike's final entry, we have all 64 contenders ! I'm going to group these as best I can, and hopefully we can have polls up as early as this weekend ! :D

I just want to say thanks to Fernando once again for what is sure to be a great tournament.
I think what might be really helpful is a list of the films for each director to be posted. Even if it's a link to their IMDB page. I just worry that we might not know the director, but we might know the films. Just a thought.
I also think it would be cool to list some directors that didn't make it into the tourney.
I for one had a bunch of other directors I wanted to nominate:
Michael Moore
Michael Mann
Werner Herzog
John Woo

No problem Mike
I was actually already thinking of adding a "works include :" text underneath each the picture of each director so that the voters know which films they're famous for. I love your IMDB idea, and I'll be sure to include it in each poll for easy access to their filmography.
I can't wait to get this underway !
65. Luis Bunuel
I know there has to be 64, but I was late to the game, and Bunuel is one of my most favorite directors of all time. Sadly, nobody nominated him :(

Yes, but in particular, one I would have added would be Robert Altman.
To have a fair Greatest Director contest, feev, you probably should also, in a few cases, underscore films that they did NOT direct. Someone should not get credit for works they produced or wrote or such just because they are connected to them in the public mind. Right?

You mean include films which they wrote the script/story/screen play for ?
I think including films they did not direct would be confusing. That sort of thing would be more appropriate as part of the discussion during voting I would think.
Do you have anything/anyone specific in mind pathoftheturtle?

That sort of thing would be more appropriate as part of the discussion during voting I would think.Yar, good idea. I think a lot of voters don't pay much attention to the discussion, but those are the folken to whom nothing is likely to get through, anyway.
Do you have anything/anyone specific in mind pathoftheturtle?Well, for one, look at what's already going on in the contest:
Lucas is only getting votes because of people's knee-jerk Star Wars fanboy response. Truth be told, he is an excellent producer and a horrible director. ...Yar: What he said.

I bet this will be an isolated case though. I skimmed through the list and don't see where else this could happen. Like Aaron said, it's just a knee jerk reaction because the names of Lucas and Star Wars are essentially synonymous.

Actually, I've been thinking about this Lucas director thing... and he's got an okay track record of okay directing ( that's some compliment, hunh  ) ... given how little he's actually directed... I count at least two excellent directing jobs - American Graffitti and THX 1138.
No offense or anything to other nominees ... but there's a couple there I can't count up to two for. :P

I'm sure you'll whine more when I say...who?
everyone who ever needs my whining as support, Brice
except Spielberg and Tarantino
this time it was Seymour_Glass coupled with Paul Anderson

Yes, and I was pointing out that I don't even know who Anderson is. He is off my radar.

Meh, I'd like to whine about Edgar Wright being kicked out of the first round, but he's only done 4 films so far, one of which I haven't seen (shocking, I know, but they still ain't released Fistful of Fingers on dvd yet!), so I'm not really surprised. Still, I know he's currently one of the coolest, most stylish comedy directors out there based purely on his work on Spaced alone! Always been a big fan!

Who?
Geezer who directed:
Shaun of the Dead
Hot Fuzz
Scott Pilgrim vs The World
All of which are currently some of the most awesome and funniest comedies I've ever seen!

...what? Scott Pilgrim, I can understand, but not Shaun of the Dead? Mate, you have to sort that out pronto!!! That's one of the best British comedy films ever - what do you think got Simon Pegg that one role in Doctor Who?
Brice

So you're like really gonna' die when I ask who Simon Pegg is, huh? If you tell me which character in Dr. Who I can probably sort that out at least. I'll try to get around to SOTD soon.
the above conversation sounds very much like there's something bears are missing on

The Editor in The Long Game. The IT Guy in Mission Impossible 3. Scotty in the new Star Trek film (far from being his best, tbh). He's been in a few US comedy films recently, you'd probably recognise him from an advert you saw on tv or something.

What parts, Jean: the references to Dr Who (which you may have worked out as being my fav tv series ever by now, i'm sure) or the discussion on Edgar Wright movies?

I'll have to go find a picture.

both... I remember your Edgar Wright recommendations, but I still haven't gotten around to watching anything

Well, Doctor Who normally has a shitload of famous British actors, at least in this country, it's something it's earned through being an institution really: John Simm, Sir Derek Jacobi, Bill Nighy, and Simon Pegg, in which the last two had both starred in Shaun of the Dead and was a massive hit in this country, especially for Pegg, who's done a few roles in comedy movies in the US since then. But the golden rule over here is if you make it on Doctor Who, you've pretty much made it as a British actor!

Yeah, I'm surprised the royals aren't trying to get on Doctor Who so they can be somebody important too.

Well, from what I've heard, one of them almost did get on the show over 20 years ago: apparently the producer of Dr Who at the time John-Nathan Turner asked if Prince Edward could be on the show as a cameo role, but an advisor declined on his behalf. I think he really wanted to do it too, by the sounds of it!

Well, you probably couldn't go wrong with Shaun of the Dead: although the title of it makes it sound like another typical spoof of Dawn of the Dead, it's actually pretty different to the usual dumb-arsed parodies. Still hysterical, but there's none of those annoying little winks or stupid jokes you get in those stupid Scary Movie parodies. A great comedy whilst being a great zombie film in its own right is how I like to describe it.
I think one moment to look out for is the same long shot of Shaun going to a newsagents done twice: one before the zombie invasion, and one the day after. Absolute genius that moment!
will download it as soon as I am through with the Spielberg I promised to watch

I hope you like it Jean, and not realise that in fact I actually have such terrible taste in films then you'll never listen to another opinion of mine again!
