Pretty sure they're new. Wasn't there word last year that King was working on some novellas? At first I thought this was Throttle and Ur and such, but then I saw the "unpublished".

I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Ur was one of the four. I doubt Throttle would be included since it's a collaboration.

But Ur was previously published, if only electronically and as an audio. I wouldn't mind it, but I'd prefer something lengthier. Throttle will probably be included in King's next short story collection; he's always included oddities like poems and such, why not a collaboration with his son.

Lilja has posted the contents of the Hodder & Stoughton press release for "Full Dark, No Stars":

STEPHEN KING HAS MAJOR DARKNESS IN MIND FOR 2010 UNDER THE DOME, published in November 2009, reached more readers then any other King hardback novel published in the UK in the last decade.

Its publication, with a winning marketing campaign, demands a worthy successor for 2010, and Hodder & Stoughton are delighted to announce the acquisition from US agent, Chuck Verrill, of FULL DARK, NO STARS.

The November publication month that has proved so successful for UNDER THE DOME and JUST AFTER SUNSET will again provide a perfect position to launch this volume of four all-new novellas for Christmas 2010.

These darkly thrilling stories are all linked by the theme of retribution, and are a showcase for the power of King’s inimitable imagination – satisfying established readers whilst enticing new ones. Visceral, immediate and featuring just a few characters, this is the other side of King’s writing; contrasting intimate portraits after the huge canvas that was UNDER THE DOME.

For further information about FULL DARK, NO STARS please contact Kerry Hood on 020 7873 6l73. And for more information about Stephen King visit www.hodder.co.uk and www.stephenking.co.uk

Going by your criteria, it looks like 2 of each. This is not the final edited version, though.

Amazon has it a super discount, so any reason not to purchase there?

Curt, I always try to buy my US copy from a local bookseller--mainly because I want to support them. I realize this may cost a bit more, but, to me, it's worth it. I also realize that not everyone can afford to do this. I DO buy my UK editions from Amazon.co.uk, though. I've only had one problem with a damaged book from them and that was remedied quickly.

Not 'fake', but maybe 'placeholder' would be a better word? When the would-be-cover for Under The Dome went live, there was also some speculation about it being the final cover. Most likely it's standard practice to add a picture to the page of a forthcoming title, maybe to give customers the sense of 'development'?

Thanks to Lilja and Bev for finding this new description of this collection on Amazon.co.uk:

'I believe there is another man inside every man, a stranger...' writes Wilfred Leland James in the early pages of the riveting confession that makes up '1922', the first in this pitch-black quartet of mesmerising tales from Stephen King, linked by the theme of retribution. For James, that stranger is awakened when his wife Arlette proposes selling off the family homestead and moving to Omaha, setting in motion a gruesome train of murder and madness.

In 'Big Driver', a cozy-mystery writer named Tess encounters the stranger is along a back road in Massachusetts when she takes a shortcut home after a book-club engagement. Violated and left for dead, Tess plots a revenge that will bring her face to face with another stranger: the one inside herself.

'Fair Extension', the shortest of these tales, is perhaps the nastiest and certainly the funniest. Making a deal with the devil not only saves Harry Streeter from a fatal cancer but provides rich recompense for a lifetime of resentment.

When her husband of more than twenty years is away on one of his business trips, Darcy Anderson looks for batteries in the garage. Her toe knocks up against a box under a worktable and she discovers the stranger inside her husband. It’s a horrifying discovery, rendered with bristling intensity, and it definitively ends 'A Good Marriage'.

Like DIFFERENT SEASONS and FOUR PAST MIDNIGHT, which generated such enduring hit films as The Shawshank Redemption and Stand by Me, FULL DARK, NO STARS proves Stephen King a master of the long story form.

Sounds like King is going for (mostly) pure realism here like some of his latest short fiction (The Gingerbread Girl, Morality, Premium Harmony). I'm lovin' it.

When I was at Scribner last november I talked with my friend inside and she mentioned King didn't like to do those events.

Considering the latest signings he gave, one can only expect that a really big promoted book (a novel, for sure) can have a booksigning. I don't think a short story collection, novellas or even the next novel will have a booksigning.

When you add his age along with the nagging injuries he certainly has to be dealing with coming from the accident, then those events have to be very draining on him. Plus, they had him on a very hefty schedule for the last tour. As much as I would love for Sai King to do more signing tours and would love the chance to get the next King book (or even one of my older ones) signed, I would rather he continue to live his life and be happy. I don't want him to become bitter toward his fans like I have seen some writers do as they got older. The stories often dry up and stop when that happens.

This one and the american one, makes me think that the stories will be pretty violent, with lots of dead people, killing...

My first thought was that it looked like a reflection in a pool of water.

I kinda got the impression that this is the view of someone hanging upside down.

I definitely agree. Obviously, it leant a little mystery. I also liked the idea of it being the view of someone hanging upside down. Kind of unsettling.

I finished the last story in Full Dark, No Stars this morning. My grades:

1922: A-
Big Driver: A
A Fair Extension: A
The Good Marriage: A+

One of King's better collections for sure. The stories are pretty dark, though, and may not appeal to everyone.

Because of it's dark themes, I don't think it will be as popular as his earlier novella collections. I think, though, that all the stories are VERY well written, so in that in that light, it's one of his best. Just my opinion, though.

Hard to choose one...I think the order would be:

1) Fair Extension
2) 1922
3) Big driver
4) A good marriage.

But again...there isn't a difference between the 1st one I choose and the last one. I think it's one of the collections I enjoyed the most, just below Just After Sunset (which I think it's the best he wrote).

I just received this e-mail from River Run Bookstore. I sure wish I lived closer... Anyone want to get me one of the books??

RiverRun Bookstore is honored, thrilled, and pretty much over the moon to announce that we will be hosting world famous bestselling author Stephen King for his new book: Full Dark, No Stars.

This event will be on Thursday, December 2nd at 7pm. The event will be held at RiverRun Bookstore, located at 20 Congress Street in downtown Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

This is a ticketed event. Please see below for details before contacting us. You must e-mail us in order to get your ticket.

* The ticket price ($27.99) admits one person and includes ONE copy of Full Dark, No Stars. Tickets are limited to TWO per customer (to admit two people in). Mr. King will ONLY be signing this book. He will not be personalizing, and he won't be signing other books or memorabilia. Instead of a paper ticket, you will be required to show ID at the door and we will check you off of a list.

*You must be present at the signing in order to get your book. We will not be mailing signed books after this event.

* Stephen King will sign for 400 people. We are able to sell an additional 50 standby tickets. It is NOT a guarantee that Mr. King will sign these additional 50 books. If he doesn't get to them, RiverRun is happy to refund the ticket price.

*In order to get a ticket, you MUST e-mail riverrunking@gmail.com with a name and phone number to contact you at. RiverRun Bookstore will call you within 24 hours of your email if you are within the first 450 people to e-mail us. We will hold your ticket for up to 48 hours without payment, but reserve the right to sell your ticket if you do not pay during that time.

*Once tickets are sold out, we will have an automatic response e-mail to notify you that all tickets are gone.

*Ticket holders will be assigned a time to show up at the store and wait in line. Dress warmly, because you will have to wait outside for a period of time!

**Mr. King will not pose for photos. Non-flash photography is allowed.

Do bookshops usually charge tickets for book signings?

I remember wandering into a bookshop in the Glades in Bromley a few years back. There was a guy there signing a book (I think some kind of autobiography thing) for a queue of people. His face was vaguely familiar... and he turned out to be one of the Rolling Stones. (I forget which one. Not Jagger.) So A little Dark Tower link there too. Hee!

I think anyone could pretty much join the queue free of charge. As long as they were buying the book... a large chunk which would go into the writer's pocket of course. (I didn't. I probably wandered over tot he fantasy and horror sections and had a perusal as normal.)

Bev Vincent
10-09-2010, 10:29 AM
It's virtually unheard of to charge a fee for a book signing at a store. Often you have to buy a copy of the current book, that's all.

Randall Flagg
10-09-2010, 02:36 PM
I received a call and have 2 tickets. From what I understand, the ~$28 includes 1 copy of the book. In other words, no premium price just to get in and THEN buy the book.

In an effort to be fair I did read A Good Marriage last night after my not so kind words hewre and liked it a bit
( a big bit) better than the 1st story 1922. Still not great KING (IMO) but had to keep readingbook just the same.
What some revierwers may call a real page turner.
To answer the question you posed feev....and again I still have to read Fair Extenstion....I'd give it about a 5 or 6 .
and thats just because it is KIng, its not say Koontz or ssome other 'writer' if it were I
doubt I wouldhave picked the book back up. so .....there I did pick it up and am thinking it was a good decision even tho'
I truely did not like the 1st story 1922.

This sounds bad, but I can't give this anything better than 7.5 at best. I haven't read A Good Marriage yet, but This is a book of four tales, and one of those tales is horribly weak (Fair Extension). Big Driver is a really well told story that reminds me of the King of old who told us such tales as The Body and Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption. 1922 was good, but still felt lacking something. I think that something was a little bit of heart (no pun intended). It felt more like words on a page than a tale of a horrible decision and how it rips a family apart.

Right now, about the best I can really say about Full Dark, No Stars is that it has given me something to do during the nights wen I can't sleep.

A Good Marriage saved the book for me. Based on reviews I had very high expectations for FDNS but found 1922 to be tough reading. well i finished DF/NS

i must say i prefered the two female led stories as opposed to the male led stories.
1922 seemed to lack passion, there was passion in the story, but did not seem to transfer to us the constant reader 6/10
Big Driver had me gripped, the story really chugged along, slightly disappointed with the end but only slightly 8/10
Fair extention. promised so much, all through the story i was expecting it to go somewhere, but it just .... didn't? or did i miss something? 4/10
Good Marriage. I enjoyed in its own right - that is not as a King story, tbh as a King story i felt a little let down. But the story itself was strong enough 7/10

Was it just me or did all the endings seem a little rushed? as if he had this wonderful story but no where to take it?
