I never noticed this before, but my book club edition, bought when first released, also has red boards.
I'm sure if there is intelligent life somewhere out there in the universe, they are wise enough to stay away from us.

My copy also has red boards.. (Purchased to replace a true 1st edition in which someone cut out all pages with images on them :O)
I reached out to the publisher for clarification on this issue, but no response as of yet.

I think we can safely state that the version with the red boards is a BCE, as I have both of them here now:
    - the paper of the red-boarded one is noticeably thinner and is more see-through than the grey-boarded one
    - the red-boarded book weighs appr. 1100 grams, the grey-boarded one appr. 1200 grams!!

    That is interesting info.
Not sure it closes the door on the discussion, but I think you are correct (I don't have any of the red board books to weigh).

Has the mystery of the red boards been solved?

I have 3 Insomnia hardcovers, all with gray boards, and would like one with red boards. I haven't done much hunting, but a quick perusal of eBay just showed two copies with red boards, one of which had no price on the DJ (suggesting BCE), and the other didn't show the inner DJ (inconclusive).

I know there is suspicion that red boards are exclusively BCE, but if Br!an says that isn't the case with his, that sounds definitive:

Honestly, I'm not too bothered if it is BCE; I'm not spending much on this, and I just like how it looks.

My BCE has the red boards that I received from the SK Library Club. The even greater mystery is the one I have with black boards.
