I never know how to rate this collection - on the one paw, it has three of my favorite stories ever (All That You Love Will Be Carried Away - that is the big Number One, and then there's Lunch at the Gotham Café and That Feeling, You Can Only Say What It Is in French); some stories I like (1408, Riding the Bullet, and Luckey Quarter), one story I appreciate rather than like (The Man in the Black Suit), but the rest is, to my taste, either meh or just plain awful; some of them bored me to tears - I mean, there's no such concentration of stories bears loved and stories bears could easily do without in any other collection. In all others, it's all kinda closer to the middle.

I will have to refrain from voting until I work out what to do about it. The average looks like all Bs, but it wouldn't do credit to those wonderful stories; on the other paw, if I give it the As those few stories so richly deserved, I would at the same time give those same As to The Death of Jack Hamilton, L. T.'s Theory of Pets, In the Deathroom and a couple of others I find absolutely unbearable.

I feel the same... about all short story collections put to this system. I'm tempted to vote "Memorable" for those stories which ARE, because I tend to forget those which are NOT. lol

Jean, I think thgat The Man in the Black Suit is much more localized in it's impact. The description of The Devil in this story is very much like those I heard growing up here in the states, as I am sure quite a few people on the eastern coast of the US have too. I'm not sure if those same stories (of finding Ol' Scratch in the woods) are heard in your area of the world, but it was a favorite of the Baptists I was raised around. Also, I don't even know if people in the central and western US heard such tales growing up either. That may have an impact on how you take to the story. For me, it was one of my favorite stories period.

A lot of the stories in this collection were very good to me, but like all of King's collections is weighed down by the stories we don't enjoy.

I enjoyed all the stories so so much, AAA. Brilliant collection. Many of them should be in school literature books.
