And I did something similar to you about my collection. I have an excel file I try to update every month and where to sell the stuff (USA, Argentina, Worldwide, since I have a large part of my collection that is in Spanish). I have my bookstore here so the contacts are there to be used.
I don't expect my wife or daughters to keep the collection (maybe my daughters will be fans in the future, who knows?), and I'm not planning to sell it in the short term (ten years).

I would say it depends more on the fact was the seller looking to sell or not. In this case he was aiming to sell, which put the power in the buyers' hands. Buyers didn't want it for that price, which was $10k. Therefore, it's not worth that right now.
If the seller was not looking to sell and someone came to them, the power would be in the seller's hands.
I just think this is like a Pawn Stars episode where someone brought in something with sentimental value and couldn't come to grips with the fact it's not worth what they wanted and leaves.
