So I have a fun one for you what would you consider to be the worth of a collection of all 1/1 books in NF to F condition? I want to insure my collection after the last set of floods but I need a ball park guess. I know what most the S/L go for but not a collection of all SK (No Bachman) all 1/1. I know most are going to say there are too many variables but what would you say to an insurance company?

What would be the approximate value of a near fine Cujo Viking Proof?

    Thank you very much

    I'd say $400-450.

Carrie to The Stand - would need pricing based on current Market sales
Dead Zone to Pet Sematary - between $50 -$100
    Talisman to EOTD - $40 - $60
Misery to Finders Keepers - $10 - $30 dependent on book, newer books to the lower end.

Probably some exceptions but thats a rough guide - Also I didnt include Bachmans or DT books, which will have their own pricing levels
"A real limited edition, far from being an expensive autograph stapled to a novel, is a treasure. And like all treasures do, it transforms the responsible owner into a caretaker, and being a caretaker of something as fragile and easily destroyed as ideas and images is not a bad thing but a good one...and so is the re-evaluation of what books are and what they do that necessarily follows." - Stephen King

Just an FYI: I don't know about your insurance company, but mine wanted a book appraiser to come in and give them an amount for my collection before they insured it. And as there is only one guy I know of in the area (and while he was in front of me, he went on Abe's asked me my most recent book--The Running Man 1st unread--and told me it was there for $.99 when I paid $100 for my copy), I decided not to give him my money and rather raise the amount of insurance for the contents of my house on the whole to cover the books.

Don't know why my insurance worked this way--you think they'd WANT me to pay for more insurance!--but they did. Basically, this was my way around it for the time being until we *hopefully* move. And move somewhere that has educated people who read so I can find an appraiser.

I found one company who does just collectables so I am hoping they will be knowledged enough, they will insure up to 1 million. Want a quote but need a ball park guess at what to tell them the value. Can I just send them Tomas' site and have them look there

And thanks Simon now when I unpack the books I just need to update my spreadsheet with approx cost. Maybe I'll start a collection thread while I'm at it... depends how much patience I have

Careful on this... I say that as I tried that too... And they made it clear that I was only covered under my policy for collectables and a collection (rare or otherwise) up to $3000 and I can tell you my little room is worth A LOT more than that...

My "umbrella policy" covers my books, artwork, Jewelry, etc. for $150,000. I keep good records of my purchases and sales. I also keep my agent up-to-date every 3 months. If we think I could go over the $150,000, I have the next option of $200,000.

The underwriter asked for appraisals on the Jewelry but excepted my data on art/book value. The underwriter enjoys coming to "The Closet" and house to see new additions and artwork.

I know some of you may say "I wouldn't trust this arrangement". I do trust them. They keep an up-to-date (yearly) video of our historical house and contents in their office safe.

Before paying for appraisals of your books, take the time to discuss different options with insurance companies.

I think I asked this before and didn't get much response, do any of the UK Collectors use a specialist insurer for their collection? Jon/Tim/Alan(s)?

I recently totalled up my collection for insurance purposes (and was shocked). I have included them in my house insurance (with Sterling insurance) as a collection. They didn't send anybody around to value them as they said I would know more about their value than any assessor they had. They are insuranced for a lump sum rather than individually. Apparently books are cheap to insure and they are low thief risk and more at risk from fire and flooding (especially around here). I think it added about £100 to the premium for £80000 of cover.

Thanks Jon, did you have to itemise any of your collection or just say total of value is < £80k? What's the deal if you need to claim for a Stand limited vs a copy of Finders Keepers?

If they were all totally destroyed then they would pay out £80000. If I left my The Stand S/L a bit close to the fire or my daughter thought it was firewood (God forbid) then I would have to provide market value of that book.

I sent my house insurance company a database of my books with their value. There was also a large amount for postage, as most of them are not available in UK. It only costs extra when individual items go over £5,000. I also sent them a video of my books to prove I actually owned them. This can be updated yearly.

No problem Simon. Seeing what Alan wrote about sending a video of the books to the insurance. My record of my collection is my DT.org collection thread as well as a database of my books with values.

Does the information that you send to the insurers include what you paid for the book, or just the market value?

I sent my house insurance company a database of my books with their value. There was also a large amount for postage, as most of them are not available in UK. It only costs extra when individual items go over £5,000. I also sent them a video of my books to prove I actually owned them. This can be updated yearly.
Thank you both - much appreciated
No problem Simon. Seeing what Alan wrote about sending a video of the books to the insurance. My record of my collection is my DT.org collection thread as well as a database of my books with values.
Does the information that you send to the insurers include what you paid for the book, or just the market value?
I didn't have to send anything to the insurers. It is just insured as a collection to a maximum of £80K and not individual books. I assume this would differ between insurers. They did not put any limit on any one book, not that I have any book over £5K!

Question: My Private medical insurance pays out for each night I spent in an NHS hospital - As I was in for 4 nights they have just sent me a check for £600 (roughly $900). My wife says I should treat myself to make up for the suffering over the last few weeks so I was thinking of buying a S/L. Based on this budget, what would be the ONE book that you would buy? (bear in mind I already have a copy of The S/L Stand - which the budget wouldn't cover these days anyway!)

Interested in what people covet in that price limit...

Go back to the hospital for four more nights. Then buy a 'Salem's Lot S/L.

hmm I think NO on that one...

Yes, def an early book, but I want something that looks special. The only early book thats in my top favorites is The Stand and I already have that one. Firestarter is a nice S/L as is Skeleton Crew, these are my top picks currently.

Just being curious : may I ask what is the cost of this insurance where books are valued for up to £80K?
