    Default Doubleday Printings

Hey, everybody. I've been trying to compile a list of the different printings of the Doubleday first editions. Eventually (late '87 or early '88), Doubleday started putting a number line on the copyright page. I've seen first editions of Carrie with a price of $16.95 and a 10th printing number line, a 13th printing of 'Salem's Lot ($19.95), and a 11th printing of Night Shift ($17.95), etc. So I figure if I keep logging the different prices/gutter codes I run across, I'll eventually be able to fill in all the gaps between the first printings and those later printings.

I know this is all a super inexact science. Especially given the way people sometimes swap dust jackets, but I think with enough data, I should at least be able to get a pretty good idea. And I'm hoping maybe you all can help me fill in missing bits, correct things that aren't right, etc.

Here's what I have so far:

NI = no number line or gutter code indicator

I've added blank lines where I think missing printings are likely to be, but a lot of that is just guess work at this point.

For whatever reason, the biggest gaps seem to be between S-T and Y-Z ('77-'78 and '83-'84). I don't know if there was something going on in those years or just fewer copies being printed or what. Or maybe they didn't print anything for a while after he left for Viking? I don't know. But for several of the books, as you can see, there's a big jump in the middle from $8.95 to $14.95 where either there weren't many copies or I just haven't seen them.

Anyway, I know this is information many people probably don't care about, but I just think it would be neat to know.

I'd especially love to know if anyone has a copy of The Shining or Pet Sematary with a number line, because those are two I haven't come across yet, and without end points, I'm not even sure how many different printings I'm looking for. I finally found examples for both of these.

Not the ISBN. The later printings have a number line on the copyright page like what you see in most paperbacks, where the smallest number is the printing. Doubleday switched from gutter codes to number lines in the late '80s. I'm trying to find an example, but I don't have any images on hand. If I can find one, I'll post an example.

I've seen that. It’s one of the conversations I perused while putting together my list. Very useful stuff there!

No problem. I appreciate you chiming in! Here's an example of the $17.95 Carrie 11th printing for anyone else wondering:

Thank you so much for putting together this resource.
This has been super helpful as all the "Doubleday Years" titles in my collection are later printings. I have a $15.95 copy of "Night Shift" and a $19.95 "The Stand" but the gutter codes are not the ones you've listed there. Will send you a message as that might be helpful for you to fill in some blank spaces in the list.
The copy that drives me crazy the most though is a copy of The Shining which has $19.95 on the dust jacket but there's no gutter code at all and no number line. There is however a barcode on the back cover that ends with >1995.
Would you have any idea of what printing/copy would that be?

Please do. The more data the better!

Part of what makes figuring this all out so difficult is that people/used booksellers have been known to swap dust jackets from one printing to another, so until you’ve seen certain combinations multiple times and started to put together the pattern, it’s all a mess. And Doubleday hasn’t shared any official records that I’ve ever been able to find. That and many sellers don’t know gutter codes are a thing and don’t show/mention them, so gathering the data and confirming it is a real slog. I’ve never seen a number line or a gutter code on a $19.95 copy of The Shining, but I’ve never been able to confirm if they’re missing or just not shown. I guess it’s possible there might have been a transitional period where they didn’t use either, but I haven’t run across any other examples like that. Sometimes the gutter codes are buried pretty deeply in the binding, so that could be the case too. Either way, based on what I’ve found so far, a $19.95 copy seems to be one of the last printings (if not the last printing) of the first edition before they switched to the new cover.

I'm afraid not, it has a no jacket but judging by some of the info I've seen, its likely a second or 3rd edition with the same $7.95 price as it was released within the same year as the 1st edition just speculation of course

Yeah, 2nd printing would be my guess. I've added it to the table. Hopefully we can confirm it eventually!

Just saw a BB1 copy of Carrie, so barring any evidence contradicting what we have so far, we're getting pretty close to filling that one in at least.

I finally ran across a copy of Pet Sematary with a number line, so I've got an end point for that one now. Table updated.

And now I've seen a $19.95 copy of The Shining with a 13th-printing number line, so at least we have all our endpoints!

I plugged a few more holes.

While researching this, I've gotten more and more interested in what's going on with the Phiesen and Holdorf covers. At this point, I've seen enough examples to say with some level of confidence that, in general, Doubleday moved from one cover style to the next without starting the print count over. For example, 'Salem's Lot ran through 14 printings with the original cover. For the Phiesen cover, I've only ever seen 15th, 16th, and 17th printings. For the Holdorf cover, the earliest printing I've ever seen is an 18th. Same for The Shining (original: 1-13, Phiesen: 14-16, Holdorf: 17+) and Pet Sematary (original: 1-13, Phiesen: N/A, Holdorf: 14, 15). For Night Shift, I haven't seen a 12th or 15th printing yet, so I'm not sure where the switchovers happen, but as with the other books, I've also never seen any overlap. The Stand went from the original cover to the uncut edition, of course, and its print count did start over at 1 when that happened, as we know, but then somewhere around the 9th printing of the uncut edition, that one also switched to the Holdorf cover and picked up the printing number from there. I've seen so many 9th printings of The Stand with either cover that I'm guessing Doubleday started printing the Holdorf covers after the 9th printing had come out and put them on both new printings of the book and existing copies they still had on hand, probably so they could charge more for the books still on hand (the price seems to have jumped from $25 to $30 when they switched to the Holdorf cover). The only oddball is Carrie. I've seen original covers up through an 11th printing, but for the Phiesen cover, I've only ever seen a 13th printing (with a price of $18.95) and a 2nd printing (with a price of $20), which obviously came later, and I've verified those two printings multiple times. The Holdorf edition seems to start with a 3rd printing. So for whatever reason, it looks like they started the print count for that one over during the Phiesen period and then continued on from there, although they kept the same ISBN. I'm looking for an early copy of the Holdorf edition or the 2nd printing Phisen edition so I can compare it to the 13th printing Phiesen edition to see if there's some obvious reason they would have considered only that one a new edition. I'll update if I find anything.
