    And Mr Robot
I like the new guy played by Bobby Cannavale. But I have to confess -- I have no effing idea what is happening on this show any more.
I think that's kinda the point. Hell, the main character isn't even sure what's going on half the time. He's constantly breaking the 4th wall and admitting this. He is a true split personality where he can literally be two different people in the same body. One is Elliot, the other is Mr. Robot.

I think at this point, now that he's gone through with his plan (or was it really Mr Robot's plan?) and seen the destruction he's unleashed and realized it didn't really work out the way he had hoped, he wants to change it all back. But Mr Robot is fighting to not let him. Now suddenly Angela is on board as well because she wants revenge for her parents. I think Darlene is just scared of getting caught and/or killed at this point,

I'm still enjoying it and will keep watching.
Yup, that's exactly what they are going for. You really only need to know the basic structure of what is going on. The plan to take down Evil Corp and the plan to pull off another hack is really all you need to know to enjoy the show.

I'm a big fan of Bobby Cannavale, so that's a great addition to the show.

Netflix is intent on having scientists invent more hours in a day and/or prolonging lives indefinitely:

I don't know how Netflix continues to put our series after series. The amount of money they are shelling out is astounding.

Netflix is on the hook for $20 billion. Can it keep spending its way to success?

It is. I'm not worried, but it's insane how much money they are spending. The crazy thing is, most of my friends who watch Netflix are still using my login somehow.

Wowzers. The craziest part of that is that there are no signs that it's going to let up anytime soon. They have to keep spending exponential amounts of money to keep up with the other big networks. Let's see how this plays out over the next few years.

Exactly. They don't have a choice. The best point that was made was the fact that in order to make the most amount of money, Netflix is going to have to change the kind of films and shows they are producing. Instead of making thoughtful, high-brow dramas, the case was made that they would be better off catering to mainstream audiences by making blockbuster films and low-brow shows. This terrifies me. What sets Netflix apart is the amazing quality of their shows.

What surprises me the most is the crazy money Netflix has spent on comedy specials. $40 million to Chris Rock for a series of comedy specials, $100 million to Jerry Seinfeld. That's insane. I love those guys, I just don't know anybody that is going to subscribe to Netflix for comedy specials.

I've noticed lately that the censors seem to be getting more lenient on the use of the word "fuck" on TV. Mostly on shows like American Horror Story, Mr. Robot and The Walking Dead. Presumably there are other shows that I don't watch that have used it more often as well. I don't know how long this has been happening, but I've noticed it more recently.

It's funny because I remember not that long ago where it was a big deal when one of the cop shows (Law and Order or NYPD Blue?) allowed one of their characters to say damn or ass or something like that. I'm sure some people remember when it was taboo for a women to show her belly button on TV.
Hearts are tough, she said, most times hearts don't break, and I'm sure that's right . . . but what about then? What about who we were then? What about hearts in Atlantis?

That's the difference between cable and traditional "broadcast." You still won't find that word uttered on ABC, NBC or CBS, but if you sojourn into cable networks, just about anything goes these days.

There is still some censorship on cable shows. Even shows that like to push the limits like South Park or Family Guy get censored. That's why I'm glad places like Netflix are showing original content. Sure there are some shows that seem to have gratuitous use of the word but in other shows it just fits in because that's how some people talk IRL.

Get Out writer/director Jordan Peele is developing a reboot of the classic sci-fi series The Twilight Zone for CBS All Access, according to THR. The news was announced during a company earnings call by CBS Corp. CEO Leslie Moonves on Thursday. It’s reportedly not clear if this is a straight-to-series order or if the project is only in development. The CBS All Access subscription service is currently the home to Star Trek: Discovery, The Good Fight, Strange Angel, $1 and No Activity.

CBS Television Studios, which produced the original show, will executive produce Peele’s version. The show comes from Peele’s Monkeypaw banner. Marco Ramirez (The Defenders, Daredevil, Sons of Anarchy) will write the script and will be showrunner for the new series.

The Twilight Zone, created by Rod Serling, ran for five seasons on CBS (1959-1964). The show was revived by CBS in the 1980s and ran for three seasons. It was revived again on UPN and hosted by Forest Whitaker in 2002 for one season. Another revival was attempted in 2012 with Bryan Singer (X-Men: Days of Future Past), who was to develop, executive produce and direct.

Peele is known for writing and directing the highly acclaimed horror film Get Out, starring in the Comedy Central show Key and Peele, and appearing on five seasons of MADtv. He had a recurring role in the first season of the FX series Fargo and is also known for the Netflix animated series Big Mouth, as well as the film Keanu.

Marco Ramirez is known for writing and producing Marvel’s The Defenders and Daredevil as well as Da Vinci’s Demons, writing Sons of Anarchy and two episodes of Orange Is the New Black.

I wouldn’t say that yet. It was his first go... however, another film as good as that... and yes I’ll say that too. Haha

Nah, that's not how it works for me. When I find somebody I like, I eagerly anticipate their stuff. If it sucks, then I dial it back.

When Chazelle did Whiplash, I wasn't like, "Eh, this La La Land thing seems like it might be decent, we'll see." I followed the whole production.

After Denis Villeneuve made Prisoners, I went home and checked IMDB to see what he was doing next. So until Peele lets me down, I'm going to be hyped for his shit.

    http://collider.com/lord-of-the-rings-tv-series-amazon/
It’s been a little over fifteen years since Peter Jackson‘s The Lord of the Rings trilogy concluded and you know what that means: remake time!

As Deadline reported today, the estate of J.R.R. Tolkien is currently shopping around rights to a TV series based on The Lord of the Rings with a hefty sticker price. The Tolkien estate has put a price tag of $200-250 million dollars on the rights and is currently taking meetings with Netflix and Amazon to discuss the next iteration of the beloved fantasy novels. Whereas earlier reports suggested that Warner Bros. Television and Amazon were already in talks for the series, it seems that Netflix is still in the running, whereas powerhouse HBO has apparently already turned down the offer.

There’s good reason for HBO to make that move. It already has Game of Thrones and what is starting to look like an endless series of spin-offs of George R.R. Martin that ensures that they will never have to seriously consider an original idea ever again to make money. On top of that, the $200 million payment is just for the rights and they are apparently quite limited to make sure that any spin-off would have to include another rights payment. This is even before we start talking about production costs, which would put the full price of making this series well over the half-a-billion mark.

That’s likely why Amazon is currently the favorite to take the deal, if it’s taken at all. Amazon honcho Jeff Bezos has mandated that Amazon’s streaming service needs a major fantasy series to compete with Game of Thrones and this would fit his bill, even if there are thousands of other fantasy and science-fiction series that haven’t been touched. Hell, nobody has been able to do a decent adaptation of Orson Scott Card‘s “Ender” series, but then you don’t necessarily want to be giving more money to a vehement racist. The Lord of the Rings offers name recognition and a clear map for spin-off series that could help with Bezos’ push to stop putting money into genuinely great TV (Transparent, Mozart in the Jungle, One Mississippi, Catastrophe, etc.) and move more toward series that could compete against major film franchises.

As Deadline points out, its strange that Warner Bros. and the Tolkien estate are working together after a lawsuit involving the use of Tolkien’s characters on slot machines had them at odds for something like half a decade. Still, nothing brings big companies together like the possibility for more money and the appeal of just remaking or rebooting stories that have already been told ad nauseum. This could very well be the big deal that Bezos has been searching for in his journey for cultural domination. On the other hand, Jackson has already put together over ten hours of inspiring filmmaking and visual storytelling based on Tolkien’s books. Amazon may be able to pay for the right director, writers, crew, and cast to make this thing work but other than fans of the books who feel like they’ve been robbed because Jackson cut out hours of maps, songs, narrative detours, and unendurable histories, is there really an audience for this that would justify spending double the cost of The Washington Post on this?
