Hmm, maybe the paperback is the first/second and the hardcover the third? That's the InDesign layout file.

I was thinking that but the copyright page is slightly different. Why not change the printing number if you are going to create a new ISBN and call it the "first Scribner hardcover edition". Alternatively there could have been a complete screw up of the first 2 printings but that seems unlikely.

Anyone have a recent copy of the Scribner trade paperback edition of IT nearby? I'm willing to bet that edition is also on its third printing...

It could be that they bound the existing paperback into a hardcover.

EDIT: Pretty sure Brian's right. Google shows it as a third printing sans the hardback isbn.

My guess, based on the image above, is that the hardcover uses the trade paperback's files for the interior and although they remembered to add the ISBN for the HC on the copyright page (it's there with the TPB and eBook editions), they neglected to reset the number line back to 1 before sending the files to the printer.

Just a guess on my part, but based on my experiences with all of the stupid stuff that can trip you up along the way.

I don't have copies of either edition here to confirm if it is the same design, etc.

Also, I would be curious if the 1st and 2nd printings of the new trade paperback had the HC's ISBN listed on the copyright page. If so, it's REALLY easy to see how someone forgot to reset the number line for the hardcover's 1st printing. (Given the large jump in the numbers between the eBook and trade paperback ISBNs and the HC ISBN, I'm thinking the HC was assigned later on, but they might also use a weird assignment scheme based on format that would explain the jump.)

So possibly due to a printing error, the first prints are labeled as thirds. This is going to be confusing as hell for collectors in the future. A second print would have to be marked as a fourth print or they could decide to label the second prints as a second prints but would in fact be a later printing than the ones labeled thirds.

If Brian is correct it would be an editing error not a printing error. A printing error would require the printer to have made an error. That is almost certainly not the case.

My January 2016 Scribner trade paperback of IT has a numberline beginning with '1'.

I talked with customer service about IT. He is going to check and get back to me. He said currently they've only sent it to print once. So looks like it could be a layout error. I also asked if he can find out what will happen to the print line going forward.

Don't "guess" on this one. I don't think they even know WTF is going on. The line informing a person (collector) as to the original publication is laughable.

If there were only two prior printings "from substantially the same setting of type-pages," bibliographically this could well be considered the third printing of the first edition. Although I don't think that is the case.

I know the original IT had at least 10 printings (probably more), as I have a signed copy.

I think their explanation is just to cover a big mistake.

Hey folks, have a question. I have a friend who is thinking about selling her DT 1 Grant first edition and wanting to know the current value of one in VERY FINE condition. Read once when it came out and put back on the shelf. Little to no marks on the DJ. I'll post pics later but just wanting to give her a ball park figure.

Sorry but read once and marks on dust jacket... I wouldn't say very fine... pics would help in this instance I think...

Here's a couple so far. She's not a collector, just a long time fan, and hasn't sent the best images. Just trying to give her a ball park figure to go start.
