    Default The Stand Figurines

This little project has been at the back of my mind for a number of years now. I've always loved the cover art by John Cayea used on both 1st editions of The Stand, known as 'Jesus and the bird man'. I wanted to have figurines of these displayed on my bookshelves and naively thought, they MUST be out there to buy...

After years of searching, it's very apparent they are not...

(a couple do exist, 'Readful Things' did a one off of each made of (I believe) modelling clay and packaged in his trademark blister packs and I have seen at least one other custom made set that was made for someone.)

Having bought a 3D printer last year during lockdown, I decided I'd have a go at printing some myself. It didn't take long to realise I didn't have the 3d modelling skills to do this justice, So i went looking for a 3D artist to commission the work to. My first attempt didn't go well, the guy took the money up front, took weeks to respond and long story short after several months didn't do the work (i did get the money back though). Valuable lessons were learnt however and a few months later I finally found someone who's work looked fantastic and was willing to do the job. He took no payment up front and would only charge if I was happy with them. I got the final renders this week, so I thought I'd share a couple of images with the group....

Ever wondered what they look like from the back?

I'm over the moon with these and cant wait to have a go at printing them.

Love to know what everyone else thinks!

I think it's a good idea and they look great and try not to prick your fingers.
I'm sure if there is intelligent life somewhere out there in the universe, they are wise enough to stay away from us.

Thanks everyone for the great feedback!

These will be quite tricky to 3D print because of the detail and some of the delicate parts like the swords and axe blade. My printer is of the Fused deposition modelling (FDM) type which is the most common, but not the best for this type of intricate work. A resin DLP printer would be much more suitable. I'll do some test prints and see how good the quality is. If I'm still not happy, I might get them printed by a specialist so I have really good quality ones to paint.

For those that have PM'd me, I'll make a decision on making more based on how well self printing goes and what the costs are to have them printed elsewhere.

I don’t often sign-in and post messages. I lurk. However, when I came across this thread, I was simply blown away, like everyone else, by those figurines! Wow!!! They are stunningly detailed! If you decide to sell any, I’d love to have the opportunity to purchase some.

    Update:

After a couple of aborted FDM print attempts, it became obvious this type of printer (or at least what my printer can do) is not up to the task. The quality is pi$$ poor.

So, I have contracted a printing service to have them printed on a Resin printer. The prototypes are on their way to me, but here are the pictures that were sent of the printed figures.

The quality and detail are excellent, especially considering the thinness of some of the elements like the teeth and hair on the Birdman. Resin printers are more restrictive on size, with a maximum height of around 250mm, so this restricts how big I can go. Whilst I have been waiting on them being printed, I've brushed off my 3D modelling app skills and made some modifications. I've managed to separate the Sword and Sheath from the Jesus figure and the Scythe from the Birdman so they can be printed separately, which massively increases the available height I can now print them at. It also means I can print spares so the pieces most likely to get broken can be replaced easily.

This production has not been cheap, factoring in the models creation, the print cost (failed and successful) and the additional cost of paints, I'm probably in around $350-$400. It makes sense to recoup some of this by selling them, but it's not going to be viable if I have to use a 3rd party printer. I'm going to have to buy my own resin printer...

So question for all of you that specified an interest. What would you expect/be willing to pay for a set of the 2 figures? My initial thoughts are around $100 for a set, unpainted, but sprayed with an undercoat as per the pictures. I would do an initial sand and clean up and provide 2 sets of each of the additional weapons/accessories. Standard height would be approx 150mm (6") to the top of the head.

I would consider doing different sizes (smaller and larger) and depending on how good my painting skills are, I might offer finished pieces as well. Other options I'm considering are:

Adding pieces to make them book ends (either 3d Printed or Wooden)
Adding an individual base (either 3d Printed or Wooden)
Adding a joint base(either 3d Printed or Wooden)

Let me know what you think...

Excellent quality and good thought on separating those components that may be easily damaged.

    I'm in for:
    - standard height of 6"
    - Both figurines mounted to a single base
    - Would be a nice touch for mounted profiles to replicate the book dust jacket artwork

    - Preferred painted / finished but would purchase unpainted if that is all that is offered
    - Not concerned with price
