Nominating: Earth Abides by George R. Stewart, winner of the first World Fantasy Award - a novel that beget the humanistic genre of science fiction (a thinking man's version of an apocalyptic tale). Very moving

Ghost Story was good, but I think I will nominate what I think of as Straub's best book, Koko - amazing!
And I will second the wonderfully gothic - The Monk

    American Gods by Neil Gaiman.
There's one hole in every revolution, large or small. And it's one word long.. people. No matter how big the idea they all stand under, people are small and weak and cheap and frightened. It's people that kill every revolution.

If we've done away with series in this competition, why is The Dark Tower still part of it? I can see why The Hobbit could be argued to stay, but DT in either facet, seventh book or series, seems to be unjust IMHO.

    Life is unjust, Stebbins.

Seriously, though, I've states my case a few times here as to why I considered TDT a long novel, and though not everyone supported me, I haven't heard a convincing argument to the contrary. If I disqualify TDT, then War and Peace should be disqualified from all similar lists, while it never is. (after all, it's a four-volume novel).

Why, of course, but not right now. Anything that has accepted here won't be eligible from that other contest.

    Also, friends, attention please.

Please bear it in mind that you have to wait for someone to nominate at least two before you can nominate again. I have counted in only the nominations that conform to this rule. Thank you

What would be just is to forget about doing away with series in this competition.

I second The Time Machine, and nominate The Island of Dr.Moreau, which has always been my favorite Wells.

I wonder which of H.G.Wells novels will remain by the time the voting starts: only three from each author will be accepted, and if someone nominates The Invisible Man (as opposed to Invisible Man), he will have four.

    I'll second American Gods.

While we're on the subject, is it unfairly biased that we are voting for books on a forum that is specifically for Dark Tower and Stephen King fans? Not saying we shouldn't, it was just a thought that crossed my mind and I'm curious about opinions.

As for series, here's my unsolicited opinion. Series such as LOTR, DT, Harry Potter, could be considered as one novel because there is one plot and the books must be read in order. But series where the books can be read out of order and understood independently (such as Dragonriders of Pern, Underworld, or Narnia) wouldn't be considered as one volume.
