Has anybody seen Pandorum?
I thought it was better than what I was expecting. Not great, but pretty good. It had some interesting themes that I've always been interested in.
If you like sci-fi/thriller/horror movies, then you might just like Pandorum.

I saw Pandorum in theaters last year (I think I gave a mini-review in the 2009 movie list), I thought it was pretty good.

I saw SHUTTER ISLAND today. I liked it a lot though it was not one of Scorsese's instant classics. But then again, I disliked THE DEPARTED, which I found annoyingly predictable until the very end, which I thought was annoyingly ridiculous. SI had some nice scenery and though I generally dislike movies with this sort of ending, this one was done well enough to warrant it.

Shutter Island -
I think Peter Travers put it best , "Martin Scorsese makes films as is if his life depended on it." Let's get the obvious out of the way - the visuals are astounding, and the island of which it is shot adds to the gloomy, somber tone vibrant throughout the movie. Scorsese manages to get excellent performances out of virtually every actor in the movie, even the extras with minimal amount of screen time manage to contribute significantly to the movie. The film moves along at such a brusque pace, that you as a moviegoer will begin to feel like a rat trapped in a maze, not unlike the films antagonist trying to untangle the webs of the mystery at the stories core. I really can't say enough about this film, other than go watch it and experience this excellent offering from one of cinemas finest directors.
A Single Man. Wow.
It was terribly sad yet amazing.
Colin Firth, I fucking love you.
Now I want to watch A Serious Man.
Went to see Shutter Island last night. Loved it! I can't remember when I saw a theater as packed. I don't think there was an open seat in the theater.
Ricky how was the book? My friend recommended it to me awhile ago, but I didn't get a chance to read it before I saw the movie.
Also finally got to watch Pandorum. Loved that one as well. Nothing beats a good scifi movie.
Only the gentle are ever really strong.
I'm glad you guys liked Shutter Island.
I'm looking forward to seeing it. I wanted to see it on Saturday night, but my friends didn't want to see it. That bummed me out.
We went to play pool instead. Not as fun as the movies, in my opinion.

i saw District 9 last night. it made me very sad
I just saw Shutter Island last night... well I really liked it overall, but can I just say I really really didn't want the ending like that? Not the last few minutes of the actual ending - I really enjoyed those last few minutes - but the explanation I thought was wayyyy predictable. Anybody could have guessed it and I was really hoping it would be different. Other than that, I thought it was great.
PS I love The Departed, and I didn't think anything in that movie was predictable.

The more I think about SHUTTER ISLAND the more I like it.
I did not read the book and did not even know about it until the film came out.
I really wanted to like THE DEPARTED, but it is one of the very few Scorsese movies I did not care for. Just before every major scene I thought to myself "This is what's going to happen next." and I was right every time. Maybe I will rent it and give it another chance. More then once I have liked a movie much better on a second viewing.
My favorite movies of the year so far are DAYBREAKERS, THE BOOK OF ELI, and THE WOLFMAN, with an honorable mention going to CRAZY HEART.
Why was AN EDUCATION nominated for best picture??!!

You're saying The Departed was predictable, but Daybreakers was one of your favorite films of the year?
Daybreakers had to be one of the most predictable, clichéd films I've seen in a long time.
I also see a lot of people hating on The Departed. I just don't understand it. I think there will always be people who just don't like something because it's popular.

I did not dislike THE DEPARTED because it was "popular". I saw it within two days of it's opening, well before it was nominated for best picture. I just didn't care for it.
And yes, I thought DAYBREAKERS was very well done and interesting for a vampire picture. There were no herky jerky camera movements, the plot made sense (well, within it's own internal logic anyway), and I enjoyed it. And I said it was one of my favorite movies "so far". The year still has over 10 months to go, remember.
I loved NINJA ASSASSIN too, by the way.

Hmm. I am so surprised that people thought The Daparted was predictable. Maybe I just don't watch enough of those type of films to have guessed what would happen. I thought all of the actors were great...and the pace and direction of the filmed worked perfectly for me. One of my all time favorites.
And again, how was Shutter Island not predictable? A lot of us...have read King, and have watched LOST and the ending was pretty much something a lot of us, I would think, would have thought of and decided it was too easy and hoped it was something else. Sorta like on LOST how people were saying...Hurley
This is how I felt about the movie. It was great - I really enjoyed it with great charecters and development I just really wish it would have surprised me more.
