I have no idea. My belief (and I have no evidence, so it is simply a gut feeling) is that the 18-39 gap is an anomaly that will later be filled in. I would guess that 1-10 went to someone in the upper echelon of Hodder and Stoughton, Waterstones, King himself etc. In other words, cherry picked, and of course free. To me that is cool-we all want a perk at our jobs.
Tomorrow someone will post # 2 or 3 and destroy my theory.
Its killing me too! i was hoping everybody else would open theirs and then i would know what number i have. I am not entirely convinced that i am keeping mine! so i didnt want to open it yet.
#136. Purchased in person at a UK bookstore.
My copy was purchased in Waterstones in Glasgow. Sauchiehall Street to be precise. At approx 13:21 pm on the day of release.
Largest gaps:
1. 1-11 (11 books)
2. 19-34 (16 books)
3. 101-112 (12 books)
4. 114-127 (14 books)

Add a new number: #48 that I got from agrabin. And you're pretty awesome for putting all this info together and keeping this list up to date!
If you're keeping track of where they were bought -- #67 was from Hatchards and #88 was from Waterstones
And #68 was from Hatchards.
Yes, open them up. Different publisher, but remember there were copies of 11/22/63 that were missing the signature page! You'd never know that until you open them!
Plus, think of all those remarqued LSOEs that have never been found.
