I spent the first 15 years of my career doing mostly mainframe programming. COBOL, PL/1 and some NATURAL. Then I changed jobs and for the last 3 years I've been learning/writing in VB.net, SQL and Crystal Reports.
Gross... I didn't know anyone used crystal reports anymore.

That said same for R. I used that in college and haven't looked at it since.

I've been almost purely front end for the last 4 years (JavaScript, angular, html, etc) but delve into SQL and such when I need to.
Crystal reports is fairly new to me. It's usually the COBOL and PL/1 that people give me strange looks about. Both of those programming languages are older than I am. There are still quite a few businesses that use them I guess. The old "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" theory I guess.

Although one of my co-workers said that he knew a guy that made a pretty good living traveling around the country converting old COBOL programs into new languages. The average age of programmers that have even heard of it much less are able to code it is getting higher and higher. At my last job I was mid-30s and one of the youngest ones there.
Hearts are tough, she said, most times hearts don't break, and I'm sure that's right . . . but what about then? What about who we were then? What about hearts in Atlantis?

Yes, and that's horrific. I have had involvement in/oversight of staff attendance, and I tried to let people know what they had and when it was expiring; to let vacation days expire is terrible. Everyone has to recharge their batteries sometime, whether they know it or not.

Here by law you get 2 weeks the first five years, 3 weeks (5-10 years), 4 weeks (10-15 years) and 4 weeks (15+), but some employers include more days as benefits. I currently have 21 days and I've been in the company 3 years. If I get another promotion, I'll ask 28 days.

I've been with my company for 16 years as part-time. That meant 3 weeks. For the record, even though my status was 24-hour part-time, I can't remember ever working less (fewer? Hmm.) than 60 hours. Pretty sweet gig, I made bank and didn't have to worry about anything else than getting my job done.

Six months ago I applied and was offered a full-time position. We have around 250 employees and not counting the supervisors, maybe 10 full-time positions. That's simply how it's done in this field; whether that's to save on costs, or how the government funding demands the hours be utilized, or to prevent employee burnout...I can't tell. Anyway, I have just finished the 6-month probationary period and I get to enjoy my entire week of holidays. Woo, 16 years and I get a whole week. I think one of the pencil pushers at the office needs to be reminded to kindly unfuck that. I'm not a new employee and it makes no sense to start from zero if my zero was nearly two decades ago.

I hope that someday, like Jerome, i'll be able to have 52 weeks holidays

Different subject : i dont remember where I got that info, but I seem to wrote that the 1979 SALEM'S LOT exists in a 4h version broadcasted on TV. Does anyone knows about it? Can someone confirm or deny it?
IMDB mentions "Broadcast on network TV in the United States to fill a 200 minutes time slot; later cut to 150 minutes. "

I did NOT meet Robert Englund, but trying again today. We were there when the doors opened and in line for Englund autographs at 12 - 12:15.
At 5:30 they tell us no more signings. They gave the 40 or so of us still there in line numbered wristbands to come back early this morning and get our autographs before everything starts. I did meet Ronee Blakely and Amanda Wyss, both were great!
