Haha brilliant, Brian. He was an extremely funny man. He became really big in the UK before his untimely death.

I love coming to Calistoga (Napa wine country) on weekdays. Even in summer peak season there are few people around. Had the 3 pool spa to ourselves yesterday.

Bought some "Muscle Milk" for the first time - the chocolate flavored. Tastes like chocolate Pepto Bismol.

I last drank that about 20 years ago. Mix it with milk instead of water. I remember it tasting more like a chocolate milkshake.

Changed my eating to a vegetable based diet two weeks ago. Surprisingly not as difficult as I thought it would be however I have found out that, at least to date, I do not like any meat substitute product. TVP, Tofu, Veggie Burger, Etc, Etc all taste awful. Went to a highly rated Vegan restaurant this weekend and couldn't stomach their "award" winning sandwich filled with fake meat.

I do end up needing to eat much more throughout the day to maintain my energy level and cooking has become more of a challenge but overall feeling okay. I added in a B12 vitamin a few days ago so I hope that helps a little.

Then there is the gas...Based on my reading this will pass. ;-)

It's all subjective. There's an adjustment period when it comes to cooking and your body getting used to the idea you're not eating animal corpse anymore. I hardly ever eat mock meats; they're really not necessary.

The transition period might be difficult but worth it in the long run. Stay away from mock meats and eat real food. I've been vegan for almost twenty years. I don't take any supplements whatsoever unless I'm running a marathon. I'd think that applies to everyone though, not just plant based nutrition.

I love dead animals. The usual stuff-beef, chicken, pork, turkey. It was interesting to actually participate in choosing a live turkey and slaughtering it, then literally doing everything (catch, kill, boil, pluck feathers, etc.). Eye opening what it takes to provide a turkey for Thanksgiving.

    I also live IPA's.

I hate garbanzo beans-thus humus, yellow mustard, pickles, catsup in anything but small quantities, uni (sea urchin).

I don't think vegetarians are all assholes, just as most assholes are not vegetarians. I love vegetarians. That is their choice and I would in no way begrudge them. And...I love a good steak.

A member was saying he was having some difficulty adjusting to this new thing he was trying. I offered advice because I have some general idea what works. Icry comes in with some useless passive aggressive shit. Was that supposed to illicit a response? Dunno. Most of us simply Do. Not. Care. about what anyone else eats and for every preachy vegetarian there's an Icry4Oy so those numbers even out.

My best friend is vegan and until recently was a chef in a restaurant. I took someone out today and bought her (chicken) dinner. I later made pork chops for my clients...like I said, we don't care.

Come on. It's the Random Comments thread. IMO opinion the rib-eye comment should not be perceived as offensive.

It's the internet. Don't have a thin skin. Things here are very sedate here. Perhaps even the slightest of humor is not welcome-but it should be.

I agree with this. the comment was not meant to be offensive.

When I find out someone is a vegan I tend to lick them and, in a Homer Simpson voice, say, "Mmmmmm tasty!"

How do you know there is a vegan in your restaurant? They tell everyone!
How do you know your with a meat eater? He's the one who says it's ok to kill an animal for food, but doesn't get his hands dirty!!!
I'm a chef and respect everybody's food choices, my BF is an ex chef and vegan, we have great discussions!!
Ben Stand, you should try Quorn chilli with mixed beans, not just kidney beans, use ingredients like cus cus , rissoto, rice pasta ect but stuff peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes with them... Also put a cauliflower in a processor and you'll get cauliflower rice it's great as pizza base or alternative Quorn !! Any other ideas anybody wants/needs just ask...

I have been eating less meat. I haven't gone full vegetarian/vegan, but two or three days a week I don't eat meat.

I need to look up vegetarian recipes for more inspiration.

Try Curries or lasagna they make good starting point as to which veg go well together or with different types of sauce..

Another thing you can try (to help a beginner out) is use a service like Hello Fresh for delivery of meals to prepare. https://www.hellofresh.com/tasty/

My wife and I aren't vegetarians by any means (we enjoy mixing it up throughout the week). The delivery service has all the items and directions to prepare delivered to your door. It's a great way to get started.

One of our local grocery stores (Wegmans) also has a great selection of already prepared meals (vegetarian included). It sort of takes the guess work out of it and allows you to explore your senses and taste buds.

    Good Luck in your endeavor.

My family has over 10000 laying hens, and 300 head of pure bread White Charolais cattle. MUCH better than Angus too We also had 500 pigs until not long ago... so save to say.... I eat meat. I eat it every day and LOVE IT. It shocks me when someone doesn't but really shocks me is vegans... they truly must not care about food as much as some is all I can think. I don't knock it but would never think of doing it.

How much I love food: my friends and I are leaving at noon for Toronto for a concert that starts at 8. It's two hours for driving, six hours for hitting up all of our favourite food places. I friggen love food, it's just different from yours.

I have to be honest here...I do not like a variety of fruits and vegetables. I do not like Pasta or Rice. I love butter, eggs, potatoes, and meat. The reason for the change is that my wife was diagnosed with Meniere's disease which is a progressive disease which will eventually lead to her losing her hearing. Her doctor told her to eat a low sodium diet and from there she found copious amounts of information that a vegan diet and low sodium can easily go hand and hand and that there may be some benefit to her from doing so. I am doing this to support her.

Back to my issue with a Vegan diet. I am not a fruit eater. I will eat a number of firm fruits only. Apple, Bananas, Pears, etc, but they must be firm. Berries, squash, zucchini, Tomatoes, and a variety of beans are generally not very appealing to me. That being said the things I like I really like. Broccoli, Cauliflower, Cabbage, Green Beans, Peas, uncooked Spinach and Carrots, etc, etc, are easily things that I can eat every day.

The main issue I have been having is the stress of having a limited selection of items that I do like and my wife wanting to include a large variety of other items which are unappealing to me. I guess I have always been a picky eater when it comes to fruits and veggies...I never realized this as I did eat plenty of fruits and veggies but only from my small box of items.

In regards to the other comments I am for people doing whatever they want to do as long as it doesn't hurt others. Go for it. Eat Vegan, Eat Atkins, Eat Paleo, Eat out of the Vending Machine,..I do not care.

Why I said I was surprised how easy it is to switch is because I was genuinely surprised. I love meat of all types. If it wasn't directly in the meal it was a flavoring to the meal (i.e. smoked ham hock in beans) which basically included 90% of all my meals from birth until now. So I was surprised that making this change was fairly easy.

Now the hard part is figuring our meal plans which work for both me and my wife.

Thank you for all the comments and ideas.

I cannot find very good information on why Fish and Chicken are directly bad for you. I see some commentary regarding the mercury in fish (and wide variety of fats dependent on fish type) and commentary on added sodium to chicken. What I haven't seen/read is the medical correlations that they have found with red meat.

Anyone out there know why all meats are grouped together as being "bad" compared to an all vegetable diet?

Christ on a cracker, I guess I should have used a smiley. I have friends who are vegans, paleos, ketos, omnivores and cannibals (kidding!). We'll be out eating and I will look at their crunchy veggie meal and tell 'em "needs meat". They see me cutting my steak and pretend to cry. We laugh and have a few drinks and that's that.

By the way, I grew up hunting and fishing in Mississippi. We lived and worked hard on a 13 acre vegetable farm. I've eaten everything we grew and everything that lived in the deep deep woods around us.

I was simply, lightheartedly, pointing out that you guys were making me hungry.

I guess what my sister told me when I was a wee lad was right - fuck 'em if they can't take a joke".
