Rule #1 of buying a telescope; don't. If you don't know how to set it up, align it properly, use it, find things, and more importantly do stuff you're interested in with it, it can be very frustrating and a waste of money. This is how all those little silver or white tube telescopes that the kids get for Christmas end up in the attic, yard sale or on Craigslist for $25. Better to get involved in an astronomy organization first, learn about stuff, find out what you like, borrow equipment to check things out, participate in outreach events to learn the hands-on aspects of it … THEN buy the scope tailored to your interests.
