I always wanted to buy a telescope.

Rule #1 of buying a telescope; don't. If you don't know how to set it up, align it properly, use it, find things, and more importantly do stuff you're interested in with it, it can be very frustrating and a waste of money. This is how all those little silver or white tube telescopes that the kids get for Christmas end up in the attic, yard sale or on Craigslist for $25. Better to get involved in an astronomy organization first, learn about stuff, find out what you like, borrow equipment to check things out, participate in outreach events to learn the hands-on aspects of it … THEN buy the scope tailored to your interests. This has been a public service announcement from your friendly neighborhood astronomer guy.

Managed to get through a surgical procedure Tuesday, got out of the hospital Wednesday night, and felt ok enough to go on a long scheduled vacation to Seattle. I look like shit, but I've also been sick as shit.

The artist of the limited edition of The Strain is even worse. It's just a wavy line. Paul Tremblay and Brian Keene are pretty bad too.

I wish publishers would put their foot down when it comes to this BS. If this isn't how you sign legal documents, then it's not your real signature.

I noticed that "bigger" writers tend to sign their books more legibly: King, Gaiman, Koontz, Simmons, Powers, Ellison, Del Toro. Of course they're not perfect -- and after signing thousands of books over a span of their career it's unrealistic to expect them to be -- but the extra two seconds they dedicate to each book is the level of professionalism that's very much appreciated.

Is it "signed" at the top or bottom of that page? The one at the top is actually better than either Chizmar's or Gillian Flynn's. The scribble at the bottom looks like they just accidentally farted while holding the pen.
