Hi all, since not everyone is on Facebook and I’ve known a lot of you longer anyway, I wanted to share some personal news.

On Friday afternoon, a few weeks before her 77th birthday, my mom relented after her long battle with breast cancer. She was the foundation of heart and humor throughout my life. She was always, unfailingly, in my corner. Although her interests were varied and outside the Stephen King world, she instilled in me the passion for collecting. She was the best mother a son could want. Nothing but love and light for you, Mom.

Looks like a lousy day here on the boards. Patrick, I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. I always say you only have to close your eyes to see her face and hear her voice ... she'll always be there with with you.

Today I live those words as well; received word just a little while ago that my grandmother passed away at 8:45 this morning. Rather than a battle with cancer or anything like that, she passed away peacefully in bed at 103 years old. It was not unexpected, we could tell it was coming. I saw her when I was up visiting in September, and while we were able to talk (which I'm grateful for, as she stopped talking soon after that, communicating only through smiles and hand squeezes) I knew then that something had changed; I could hear it and feel it.

103 is amazing, and to put that age into perspective:

- She was born 5 months before Roald Dahl, 7 months before Rasputin was murdered in St Petersburg, and 31 years before Stephen King was born
- John J. Pershing crossed the border into Mexico with the 7th and 10th Cavalries in pursuit of Pancho Villa
- The British Sopwith Camel made it's maiden flight
- The first 40-hour work week was instituted
- The Battles of Verdun, the Somme, and Jutland occurred
- The Chicago Cubs played their very first game at what would become Wrigley Field; she was 4 days old at the time

Jesus ... Pancho Villa, Rasputin, the Battle of Verdun, and the Sopwith Camel. And everything since then.

She worked at an industrial laundry where she operated a steam press until she was 83 years old, and only stopped because the laundry burned down; she was really pissed afterwards when she couldn't find anyone to hire her for another job. She also raised my brother and I, taking us and my mom into her home after my parents got divorced when I was five; I always say I'm who I am because of her, I'm much more her son than my mom or dad's and couldn't be more grateful and proud for that.

After my grandfather passed away in 1969 (50 years ago), she never had another boyfriend or even thought about it, he was the love of her life; in a week or so we'll be laying her with him. Odds are really good she'll be the only one there with 1916 - 2019 on the stone.

I needed to write all this now; the tears will come later tonight after I'm home.

George, you have my condolences, but also my congratulations of sorts. I think if most people could pick any way to go, it would be "peacefully, after a long life". Everyone has to go eventually and I am glad for you, because she was such an important person in your life, that hers was not cut short as so many are.

My grandfather, who was similarly important to me, lived to 97 and passed away peacefully last year. There were lots of tears, of course, and still an abundance of times when I'm sad that I can't call him or see him, to give him some good news, or tell him about something that would make him happy. But whenever people would tell me how sorry they were I would let them know how lucky I felt to have him around and cogent for so long, and how I hope I'm as lucky as him.

So I'm very, very sorry for your loss. I'm sure it will leave ripples in you and your family for a long time. But I'm happy for you that you got to have her for so long, and that she was able to communicate to you until almost the very end. I am sure I would love to hear some of the stories she could tell, I was always asking my grandfather for them because at that age, even their day-to-day lives when they were younger are so far removed from ours. If she was rural like my grandfather, her family probably didn't even have a car for the first part of her life! The historical milestones you chose are apt - it's really hard to process that amount of time.

Best of luck these next weeks and months, as you absorb this momentous change. I have a box of stuff that I gathered from my grandfather's house that I still can't bear to open 18 months on. It's a process, and I wish you and your family the best through it.

Patrick and George, I'm very sorry for your losses. It sounds like both your mom, Patrick, and your grandma, George, were wonderful ladies. Thank you for sharing a bit of them with us. I'm sure this is a hard time for your families, but I hope you're all able to lean on each other for support and to celebrate their lives and the love they had for you.
