I'm happy to try for you. Is it a laptop?

    Ralph Mulleins
Yeah, it's a laptop. Truthfully, I've been able to recreate much of the data already, so I don't really thinkit's worth the effort. Mainly lost much of the historical financial data and my SK spreadsheet. I have the SK data at home on my desktop. My wife is completely ignorant when it comes to computers, but my daughter is pretty good. Thanks for the offer though.

I recommend getting a gmail account and keeping a copy stored in the cloud drive that comes with it. Makes it so you can access it anywhere and it doesn't die with the computer. they also have their own line of products to edit excel, word, etc directly in the cloud without having to download to edit. I keep all my important docs up there in locked folders.

Just a thought for next time.

As some of you might know, the Napa and Sonoma areas of Northern California were hit by wildfires a few weeks back. Tourism has suffered greatly. The wife and I are trying to do our part to stimulate the economy.

I would recommend dropbox if he dont want to move from excel to google's version for instance.
Glad to hear, though, that most isnt lost!

Very true. Main reason I like google is you get 15GB of storage free compared to 2GB with Dropbox

I guess I'm just old-fashioned (or maybe just old :-)) but I'm hesitant about making such a radical (to me) change. I DO want to express my thanks for all the input. If nothing else, it's given me a lot to think about.

If nothing else, get a flashdrive or a portable HD and back up your important stuff to it once a week or so.

The great thing about dropbox, is that it syncs automatically files in a specific folder to the cloud, and therefore you do not have to manually do a backup on a pendrive etc

John, that happened to me with my last computer (except it was a virus) and I learned the hard way about not backing up my files. After that I did Dropbox and then when my data grew beyond the free amount, I switched over to the Google one.

Last year, my ex-wife claimed our daughter on her taxes, the year before that I did. Know what I did with my refund that year? Paid people back for prepaying for the book that I was never able to publish. Five thousand dollars in, and five thousand dollars out, in an instant. I'm excited for this year's taxes, I don't have ANYONE to pay back. It's ALL mine.

What are you guys doing with your refunds?

A refund is something people do not get unless they have children 17 years old or younger. I have two dependents (one disabled and one a senior in high school) who are over 17 and seemingly account for no type of tax benefit.

In this thread, as with all threads, posts from the current day are labeled "today" (as opposed to with a numerical date such as 1/11/18 ). When I jumped in now and looked quickly, I thought the newest one said "tomorrow," and for like 1/10 of a second I thought "wait, what?"

I got an obviously fake spam email yesterday that said I had an issue with my Apple account (of which I don't even have) and it listed a couple of transactions. One of them was dated for today. I can only assume it was sent from India or someplace like that where they are actually a day ahead.

I'm sure others have noticed as well, but there has been a dramatic increase in the number of unsolicited spam/scam calls that I receive on my cell. Some automated, some live. I recommend this app as a defense against these calls. The app is called RoboKiller. You install it on your smartphone, and it has a database of over 110,000 spam numbers. It has blocked several calls for me already and is a great time saver.

This is one I received today, which I thought was good for a laugh. Here is the message. It's word for word, so the grammatical errors were part of it.

"Hello this call is from Microsoft security department. We encounter a serious issue coming out of your computer. It seems to be someone is trying to hijack your computer and trying to steal your personal information. If it's not fixed right away then your computer will become obsolete and all of your confidential information may got compromised. If you are the one who is using Microsoft Windows in your computer then please call.... or press 1 to speak with security team now. Please ignore if we called you by mistake. Thanks."
