"I have a stack of 78 rpms from my grandmother, but when I went to pick up the top one some years ago it fell apart, and I'm afraid to touch the rest of them."
Sounds like they were stored incorrectly at some point, not temperature controlled (stuck up in the attic or the basement); I have some old cylinder records that are like that, touch them and they just fall apart. Treat your old records like books and they should be okay, with good temperature, humidity and light control. Not much you can do for the ones that are already brittle, no way to reverse that, all you can do is treat them carefully from now on. Also don't stack them, they should be stood on their sides (like in Scoogs' photo above) otherwise they warp from the weight of the records on top of them. I've got a ton of 78's from the's 30's and 40's; if Polish Polka music is your thing, I'm your man.

Way too late for that, I'm afraid, they've been like this for more than 30 years. I'd love to play them again. The phonograph they're stored in only has the 78 rpm speed, and needs re-wiring to use. It has incredible bass! But alas, no stereo. The horse was also my grandmother's. I have no idea of its origins, but it has to be more than 100 years old.
The records are mostly Hungarian and German recordings.
I'm sure if there is intelligent life somewhere out there in the universe, they are wise enough to stay away from us.
And the people bowed and prayed, to the cell phone god they made...
Did the loop last September.
Fun trip, but it's like New York City pricing everywhere.

Oh yeah, it was great. I think I was there 11 days and then another day and half after a side trip before I flew back home. Well worth it.
They like to promote their gas station hot dogs. At about $5 they are one of the cheapest food options there and they are actually pretty good.
If you have time, take the ferry to Vestmannaeyjar and spend the night there and a day exploring. It's an island off the southern coast.
About 1/3rd of the island didn't exist until 1973 when one of the volcanos erupted with no notice and added significant land mass.
Something like 400 homes were destroyed and they had to use several BILLION gallons of seawater to control the lava flow.
I recommend the hike/climb up Heimalettur (Home Rock) while you are there if heights don't bother you. It gives a great view of the town and both volcanos on the island.

I have a question about the recent re-release of Three Novels Barnes and Noble Collectible edition
There's a typo in 'Salem's Lot in the prologue on page 193. It says "tail man" instead of "tall man." Curious if this typo is in other editions of the book? Or maybe it's printed from a shitty e-book transcription?
Here's a picture.
Anyway it's a pretty nice book, pages are kind of thin though.
It may have been mentioned at some point as the album came out over a year ago, but mentioning Salems' Lot reminded me that I went to see Bon Jovi in concert a month or two ago, and does anyone recognise the artwork for the last album?
