Which way goes to Mecca?

It's a very classical one so I am sorry if you know it.
Anyway it's a damn hard one. If you know the answer (because you have known this one for long) please use spoiler tags. If you are guessing, feel free to post here.

A man is going to Mecca. As he is walking he comes to point where the path goes to two directions. The path he he's been following for long goes to left and right, too. There are two guards at the crossing. They know which path leads to death and which one goes to Mecca.
But!
One of them is always telling the truth.
The other one is always lying.
AND you can ask only one question from them. Only one.

What should the man ask to find out which path goes to Mekka? If course the man doesn't know which is the truth teller and which is the lie teller.

Okay, in this case I was just a very stupid child.
Anyway when I said this riddle to other people usually they didn't get it easily.

Heh--you should see the riddles I've been putting up--especially my most recent. They STILL haven't gotten the right answer, and I've had to walk them almost all the way....

Sorry, I don't always know how my words are going to be received....

I certainly didn't intend to be hard on anyone, or to hurt anyone's feelings. I just particularly like a challenge in my riddles--that's just me--and these have mostly been riddles I either knew the answers to or could figure out easily. Maybe I should stop posting in the threads if that's the case....

John_and_Yoko: No problem. You didn't hurt my feelings at all. For my part I love these tale-like not that hard riddles. I have so many good memories with them. I can understand if they don't give you enough challenge but others can like them.
So it would make no good to stop posting hard riddles because many people must like them but I hope some of us are hungry for some easy ones, too.
