Well, I unpacked my 3 boxes containing my bookcase and put it together. It looks fine and sturdy (I just need to mount it to the wall) but one of the doors has a gigantic scrape on the glass.

I really hope I don't have any problems with this, like having to return the whole freaking bookcase, as it's already put together.

Patrick, I remember you saying you had a door problem as well. Were they accomodating to you and the return easy to process?

Ricky, yes, I sent an email and attached photos of the problem. They sent me a new door. (I still have the old door stored in the garage just in case.) Good luck!

I received my new doors yesterday and am putting them on today. I have one door on and the magnets on the bookcase are sucky. I don't think they could be more weak. I mean, I put the door one (and it's lined up properly) and when I close the door, it just opens again. The magnets have nothing magnetizing about them. I'm pretty peeved about the whole situation.

Damnit. Why does nothing ever work for me?

Magnets or not, the bookcases should be "slightly" tilted backwards, and thus the doors at the halfway point should want to close.

Yeah, I mounted it to the wall so it is a bit backwards, like you said. That's why I don't understand why the doors aren't closing even if the magnets aren't strong enough.

Are the magnets touching the metal plates on the doors? The bookcase may be tilted back slightly which is good; However if it is at all askew, the metal and magnets may not make contact.

Are they not closing, or once closed not staying closed? Or Both?

The right side closes fine, but the left door closes, by doesn't stay closed.

I just have to hold it there for a minute and it closes but it's not as strong as it should be.

That's weird, because both the TV stand and the cabinet I bought from Home Decorators have magnets so strong you practically have to pull the door off to get it open.

That's how all 5 of my bookcases (same model as Ricky) are as well - VERY strong!

I was worried about the color, but I like it. Not too red. As in most photos however, it doesn't look as good as it does in person.

It looks great Ricky. And if by "donate" you mean exchange to you for a small sum of US currency, I may be able to help you out with a S/L or two.

    I like that definition.

I wasn't really looking to buy anything right now, but I'm always curious about what everyone's selling. Let me know if you've got anything cool.

This question could probably also be posted as a general collecting question but since it has to do with bookcases as well I will post it here....

For a long time I had been storing my books on open shelves in the basement and have just recently acquired some new bookcases with glass doors and thought it would be better to move them upstairs out of the humidity of the basement. Now that I have about 2/3 of the move complete (waiting for the last case) I wonder if I have a new problem, that being sunlight. I noticed that at certain time during the day I was getting direct sunlight shining in the bookcases which I knew was not good and would cause fading so I now make sure to adjust the blinds in the morning to be sure the light does not directly shine on the cases. It is a rather bright room and even though the light does not shine directly on the cases should I still be concerned with fading? Am I better off moving everything back to the basement and try to keep the humidity under control with a dehumidifier? Am I making too much out of this? Where do others keep their books? Any thoughts/insight would be appreciated.

As soon as I get my last case built and in place I will start a collection thread to show off my small, but ever growing collection.

Direct Sunlight is the biggest prob. Close the blinds and you should be good.

I agree. Direct sunlight is worse than humidity, but is easier to control. Close your blinds and this should stop the UVB. The glass should stop the UVA. (maybe thats the wrong way round?)

Ricky, your new bookcase looks great!

Skippy, there are also some very high quality window tints these days - not the really dark stuff you see on cars or mirror-y stuff you see on commercial buildings sometimes, but high quality material made for home windows. You might consider having a local company do that to your bookcase windows.

    - - -

As discussed upthread, homedecorators.com stopped selling those Oxford bookcases in the Natural/Honey color. I really wanted to get a smaller bookcase that matched my existing one, but that is no longer an option. After debating going with "Merlot," which I didn't really want, I decided to go with something else entirely.

Here is my brand-spanking new bookcase. I picked it up just this afternoon. As you can see, it has a rustic look as the glass door is actually an old window. The bookcase was built to scale to the window. (As you may notice, the window was not repainted on the interior. That's on purpose)
