Ricky, are you on their email list? They send out deals pretty regularly.
I am but they've never sent me a coupon (by catalogue or email).

Well, I finally did it. After about 6 months of searching and deciding, I actually bought a bookcase.
http://www.homedecorators.com/P/Oxfo...ass_Doors/150/
Originally, I was going to go with a 5 shelf, but the knobs were only about 28" off the floor (I'd have to bend considerably to open it). I figured to just go for the extra shelf. I just hope I like the Merlot color.
In additon, I got 10% off the order and free shipping (shipping for HD isn't cheap, as I discovered).
So Patrick and Dave, you guys are a reason there's a massive hole in my wallet.

You're gonna love it, Ricky.
Same ones I got (only in black) and I love 'em so far. Still moving things around trying to figure out where everything will end up. Pics coming!
Oh, and Ricky - it'll come in 3 boxes, so don't be surprised!
This collecting stuff is a sickness! ~Patrick
Thanks for telling me! I would've been having an anxiety attack about being charged for three!

Does anyone here have any experience with the IKEA bookcases? I live withing an hour driving of the one in Charlotte, NC and could eliminate any shipping costs other than the cost of about two gallons of gas (love my Prius).
I desperately want to replace my particle board cases.
Maybe I should just ask my dad to build me some cases instead?
Margaret Emmie Mackey Catoe, you are, have been, and always will be my soulmate, and I love you.

are these IKEA bookshelves strong? I like the fact they have some with 6 shelves. I really am looking for something like that.
Geoff
Yea about that strong Mr. Rabbit, thanks!
I like that some have even 7 shelves. I think I'll be buying one or two of these.
Geoff
I'm in the UK but there are IKEA shops worldwide. They are called "Billy" bookcases. Here's a link to the IKEA USA ones.

ha ha, funny- I had not read this thread... but today I went online and found these bookcases... bought the 6 shelf 72"x48"x13.5" version in the merlot - (but they are not going to be in stock until 3/26)
then I log in here tonight and the top thread was bookcases, so I thought I'd see what everyone else bought and see several of ya'll already beat me to these.
I've already got 6 tall lawyer bookcases filled... and 3 smaller ones filled, but I've been stacking books on my kitchen table for several months now (which is almost totally covered with books) and thought I'd get a proper place for them. I decide to go with the biggest case I could find since It's the last one that will fit in my spare bedroom turned "Library".
so, question.... those of you that bought these, are ya'll happy with them? the sale's lady said they were made of solid wood (covered in veneer) - are they strong enough where they aren't going to warp if I fill them with under the domes? they just seem to be really cheaply priced compared to all the other ones I saw... makes me a bit edgy.
ricky, are you happy with the Merlot color?
Half my other bookcases are a dark cherry color, and half are a dark oak finish- i'm hoping this matches with my cherry colored ones somewhat.
Couldn't be happier with mine. I'd post pics of mine like I promised before when I first received it, but it's half-filled and wouldn't look very cool, nothing like the cases stuffed with rarities posted here
Pablo, please post some pictures. We ALL started slower.
John
Ironically enough, my bookcase arrived today. I haven't put it together yet, but I took a peek at the color and I'm happy with the 1/2 inch that I saw of it.
It's like a darkish cherry, so I think you'll be pleased. I'm going to hopefully have it up in the next couple of days so then I'll tell you more about the color.

yes, please post pictures!
i'm thinking that since these are 48" wide.... i might make some removable wood braces out of 2x12's, stain them, contact glue some thin dark carpeting onto the top and bottom, and slide them into the center positions on each shelf. (unlike my rendering below...they'd be positioned directly in the center... and be under every shelf)
of course if i put the heavy books toward the bottom... I might not need braces for any shelves toward the top that have lighter books on them. with it being 4 foot across though... i'm thinking they might start to bow over time.
even with 2" braces in them....getting the 48" over the 36 inch gives me 60 inches more shelf space (12" - 2" for brace x 6 shelves).
what's that... 2 or 3 copies of under the dome? ha ha
i figure having the braces movable (rather than fixed) will allow me to maximize the shelf space by aligning them right next to the center located books rather than having space left between the books and the braces.
Try putting the support on the back (behind) the unit. A 1"x2" by~48" attached on the back, with holes through the back panel into the support piece will relieve the sag from the center of the shelves.
Terry, the back panel is almost paper thin on these. Looks great, but will add no support unless you are screwing the support into the wall behind the case. Somewhere upthread (gotta run so can't link right now) I posted about my issues when I bought mine, but I do like it and would buy another.
