Default Mannish Boy Blues - The Gender Discussion Thread

    Hello everybody!

I'm taking a course called Thugs, Preps, and Playas: Critical Approaches to Masculinity this semester.

Yeah, weird course title, I know.

Anyways, for our final I'm required to do a project about whatever I choose. What I've decided to do is a survey to collect data about people's opinions and perceptions about masculinity in general.

It's only ten questions, takes a maximum of five minutes to fill out, and it's completely anonymous.

So, will you help me out and take the survey? I'd really appreciate it!

    Thanks so much!

ETA: This thread is now for any and all respectful discussion on gender issues, masculinity, femininity, stereotypes, and the like.

Done. Interesting survey. I wonder if you'll be able to figure out which answers were mine.

Good luck with the final SJ. I'm interested in seeing how the data pans out.

I'm having a mental stumbling block here.

I don't really associate particular personality traits with masculinity or femininity. Should I fill out the questionnaire as if the questions were about physical characteristics?

That was fun, I did it just after typing up survey responses for my prof and I found myself using phrases I hate other people using. Really added some perspective.

PS: You'll know mine because I talked like an anthropologist. I won't say what I said so I don't skew the results, but you'll probably notice.

    Sure Coz.

It's supposed to be left open to interpretation. So far I've had responses that are purely physical, some that are purely personality traits, and some that are both.

    Do whatever works for you.

My answers might be a bit strange because I am not a native speaker but I did it with pleasure.

I honestly tried to do this SJ, but I was stumped on two of them. It said the question requires an answer, but I have none. Sorry! There really should have been a way to opt out of a question I think. I don't see one race/ethnic group as being more masculine or feminine than another. I also couldn't answer the question that follows it with the more feminine/more masculine ratings.

that's so not true SJ. he just couldn't figure out a way to put "BRICE" in as most masculine in all categories.

SJ: if you post your paper here, maybe we shouldn't merge it, but leave for further discussion on what is masculine and what is feminine? I wouldn't mind, only think of a good title.

I would like that - it's an interesting topic for sure.

When I get all my results compiled (it will be a poster presentation) I'll definitely post them here. Some of the stuff I'm getting is really interesting. (And some of it makes me laugh )

Brice - I think a couple other people had the same problem. I should have provided an opt-out option. I'll have to remember that for future surveys like this.

Actually, I kind of liked that you had to come up with an answer... it sorta made me dig deep and really think.

That was also kinda my intention... I figured if people could opt out they would just do that for all the ones they didn't want to answer.

But I definitely see where Brice is coming from. I had a few people tell me the same.

SJ, I tried but I'm afraid academia has made me too complicated of a person to spend less than several hours answering those questions. I eventually gave up, seeing that I'm in the midst of final exam/project season.

    I hope you understand.
